It’s funny how fast Fr Pine’s brain moves. His brain is already 3 words ahead of his mouth lol. Smart man.

So glad Fr Pine is using his brilliance for the glory of God. He is so young. Imagine his scope of knowledge in another 20 years. May God bless him and keep him humble…and amusing. 😉

Introduction 0:00:00 Joy vs. Happiness 00:02:52 How many ex-cathedra statements have there been in Church history? 00:13:11 In what sense do we see or know God? In what sense can we not until the Beatific Vision? 00:15:40 It has been said that God could not make a square triangle or a rock too heavy to pick up, thus he cannot do "anything". Would miracles also fall into that category? How do they differ? 00:19:21 If Jesus was raised a jew, and if we were to be like Jesus, why don't we as Catholics consider ourselves Jewish? 00:24:05 What is your approach to note-taking when reading theological literature, and do you use any software tools? 00:28:57 Can we say that God in his perfect knowledge allows us to die in the state of grace that he knows would if given the chance to live any longer? Any support for this in the tradition? 00:33:36 Does Aquinas have any writings on what happens to non baptized babies, particularly those that die in abortions? 00:38:11 Given that the crucifixion was fitting and God does not cause people to sin, in choosing a method of salvation that required others to sin by killing, is this not the same thing? 00:42:18 I sometimes desire death in order to be in complete union with God. Is this bad? 00:47:02 What is your goal in life? 00:50:56 Dei Verbum says God "can be known with certainty" from creation. This is hard to fathom. Every good reason to believe, yes, but ABSOLUTE certainty in this life - how? Do Aquinas' ways purport certainty? 00:54:51

Go to laydominicans.org and you find the information there. It's our province, the Province of St. Joseph in the United States, but the information for all the other US provinces are there too. I'm a Dominican in the same province as Fr. Bonaventure and Fr. Greg. If yoy have more questions, let me know and I can (hopefully) at least point you in the correct direction.

@@VABJMJ God's timing. Perhaps there's a reason that God only knows. I don't know anyone in the laity over in Europe, only a few friars. Maybe you can Google the OP laity in the country where you're going to be living in, see where the chapters are, and connect with them. Of course mentioning that it will be another year before you'll be there in person. You may have a better experience with their responsiveness. I'm so sorry that no one has responded to you!

I think Fr B is incorrect about the number of ex cathedra statements. First of all because, “ex cathedra” does not mean “infallible.” It plainly refers to the man in the office, making it clear that he is, in some way, speaking in his capacity as a successor of Peter. Of the criteria for an infallible statement, this one is at least implicitly fulfilled all the time (and full explication is not a condition of infallibility in Pastor Aeturnus). As for how many times popes have met the criteria for infallibility, there are more than the two times popes have used a formula to invoke their infallibility based on the language of Vatican I - as though the council granted popes this new power they did not previously have. And even Francis has hinted that JPII’s Apostolic Letter on women’s ordination met the criteria for an infallible statement.

@@carolynkimberly4021 So, what part of my argument do you disagree with?
@claymcdermott718
@claymcdermott718 2 года назад
@@carolynkimberly4021 The fact that PiusXII made a statement that explicitly invoked infallibility doesn’t mean he’s the only pope whose statement(s) met the criteria listed in Vatican I for an infallible statement. What’s more, your alternatives are not either: “only those statements which invoke language from Vatican I to explicate infallibility are in fact infallible;” or “everything every pope has ever said is infallible.” The criteria is: does the statement meet the criteria set forth in Vatican I as the criteria for an infallible statement?

26:22 Why does Fr. Bonaventure call Jews today our "brothers and sisters"? St. Paul seems to make it very clear that only Christians are children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ. He also calls Jews the offspring of Satan and enemies of the human race...so why is it that knowledgable priests, such as Fr. Bonaventure, refer to Jews as if they share in God's kingdom (i.e. brothers and sisters)?
@julioalonzo1383
@julioalonzo1383 2 года назад
Go read Romans 11 on this. He probability referred to those that explicitly rejected Christ. Paul himself was a Jew, and so is our Lord. Judging today’s jews by what some (or most) Jews in the time of our Lord did, would not only be wrong, it is also condemned by the Church
@phoult37
@phoult37 2 года назад
@@julioalonzo1383 "He probability referred to those that explicitly rejected Christ" --How does that not apply to Jews today? And I made no mention of "judging today's Jews" based on the Jewish actions in scripture. I asked why they are referred to as our brothers and sisters, when Paul seems to exclusively use that label for Christians.
@julioalonzo1383
@julioalonzo1383 2 года назад
@@phoult37 Most Jews probably haven't heard a compelling case for Christ, that's why we have to evangelize them. I think it's similar as how the Church sees Protestants today, in that it recognises that those that have been brought up under protestantism are not formal heretics, but only materially so. I think we could make the distinction for Jews, that (most of them) don't formally reject Christ, only materially so. Regarding calling them brothers and sisters, I am not really sure, I'd have to do more reading on that. It's a really interesting topic considering what Paul says on Romans 11.
@phoult37
@phoult37 2 года назад
@@julioalonzo1383 "Most Jews probably haven't heard a compelling case for Christ, that's why we have to evangelize them." --I certainly agree with this. When Bishop Barron failed to evangelize Ben Shapiro, when asked point-blank about salvation outside of Christ, he caused great scandal, and I think it's a perfect example of the Churches failure to evangelize Jews. I'm psychologizing a bit, but there seems to be a reluctance from older Catholics to speak of Judaism today in anything other than glowing terms, and I suspect it has to do with post-WWII education, dual-covenant theology infiltration, and the Zionistic streak in Republican foreign policy since the 60s.
@tomws5594

He uses "Brothers and sisters" toward Jews because of the human nature that we share. That is a possible use of 'brothers and sisters', a more "biological" one. I would point out that he didn't say "Brothers and sisters in Christ". Secondly, as Catholics, we mostly use "brothers and sisters" in the sense of brothers and sisters in Christ, where here it would be limited to Christians. St Paul was talking about that sense, about this spiritual reality (not the "biological" one).

Treating the careful exploration of deep discontent as less important than being "ordered" towards certain ends is a recipe for a very miserable life. It is really irresponsible to tell people that sadness and depression should essentially only seen under that viewpoint. It is a recipe for a lot of unhappiness for a lot of people.
