Not just the great comedy that should be remembered, but the humanity and greatness of heart. Thanks, this was a moving film and one to be cherished.

Joyce was born a truly talented actress, comedienne, story-teller, a really funny lady, and more than likely still entertaining the hundreds of actors/actresses who have left this world with her wit, and joined up with the many other funny ladies who passed away too early, but we will never forget them and their talents.

I've grown up loving Joyce. The nursery school sketches still crack me up, 'George, don't do that!'. She was very musical and displayed her broad knowledge on Steve Race's 'My Music'. Also, she was brilliant in the St Trinians films!
@brmh1667
@brmh1667 4 года назад
She was a genius. Sadly for us, a far too under-used genius. She is so funny, I think it is because she is so genuine and unaffected, as well as talented. Brilliant, and that very rarest and most valuable of all things these days, a gentle-lady. If anybody broke the mould it was Joyce Grenfell.

So Sir David Attenborough is not only wise where the animal kingdom is concerned - how brilliantly perspicacious of him to see the great Joyce Grenfell's potential. Wonderful documentary - thanks for posting.
@andrewtongue7084
@andrewtongue7084 5 лет назад
Succinctly put, Mr Finklestein. I would add, that whilst not a conventional beauty, the backdrop photograph of Joyce whilst David Attenborough is speaking, shows how truly beautiful the lady was - both aesthetically, but more significantly, within. Maureen Lipman is most apposite in stating that Ms Grenfell had "gravitas" - then, as now, it is a personal quality one rarely sees.

When I was young my Mother took me to see Joyce Grenfell. I loved her, she could bring her characters alive. The ones especially vivid were the kindergarten teacher with her "George......Don't do That!", a sketch called Tuesdays & most specially the famous musician's wife. It was a marvellous experience.

The mark of truly great comedy, isn’t how much it can make you laugh. It’s wether or not it can make you cry. At 42.32 I burst into tears, and wept like a baby. Victoria Wood could do it. The trick is to do it sparingly. Joyce did it very occasionally. But she did it better than anyone.

Superlative documentary of my all-time favourite comedienne - no-one came close in my experience, & the very recognisable caricatures she played - a plethora of mannerisms that might be a distant aunt or cousin, each redolent of (at least) one person you knew, & thereby making the portrayal all the more amusing. A fine individual, gracious throughout - the true Mistress of the Preamble - wonderful !! :D

Can anyone help. Years ago Joyce performed the most moving monologue in which she was the wife of an internationally famous singer (if I remember). She was being interviewed in the monologue by an unheard interviewer and you had to infer what she was being asked by her answers. The interviewer seemed to make many references to women that her husband had met professionally while abroad, inferring that there was more than just performing in these friendships. The monologue closes with Joyce saying quietly, 'Ah yes, but he always came back to me'.
