Dame Gracie Fields, DBE, 81 (born Grace Stansfield; 9th January 1898 - 27th September 1979) was an English actress, singer, comedienne and star of both cinema and music hall. She spent the later part of her life on the isle of Capri, Italy. Fields was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) or "services to entertainment" in 1938, and in 1979, seven months before her death, she was invested a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II.

I met Gracie in the early 70s, at her Villa on Capri. We were on a guided tour & she took time to greet everyone. Then she asked us if she could have a lift in our minibus down to the village. At a beautiful vantage spot she stopped the bus & sang the theme from the Godfather. What a privilege to hear Our Gracie sing! Bless her.

I'm an American and my late father was stationed in England during WW II. He spoke fondly of hearing and seeing both Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn. He said they were like "the girl next door" you'd take home to meet your parents. Lovely memories.

I recently discovered Gracie gave her services free of charge to help raise the funds to build Derby Hospital. Such an underrated lady, she deserves the same recognition as Dame Vera

Brilliant, wonderful entertainer who is still fondly remembered here on our beautiful island of Capri. You recording of 'Summertime in Venice' is the first recording I can remember hearing back in 1960. It has always been my favorite song and can still be heard on this beautiful island. Wonderful Lady, Great Singer who made her home on a very special place where she now rests in eternity.

Sad to hear the man say 'Vera Lynn just went to France' (35m56sec in) as Vera entertained the troops in the Burma Jungle. Shame to turn it into a competition, and more so an inaccurate one. That said, this is a great tribute to a great star!

My late grandfather always said that he signed up to fight the Nazis in 1939 in order to get away from both Gracie Fields and George Formby singing at him

Could you tell me when this was originally televised please and by what channel? I am wanting to find more footage from this programme. My grand father features on this programme and it was a lovely surprise to see it. I want to see if I can somehow view/obtain the full footage of some of her performances with him. Many thanks

Sinatra had talent, but no real love for his audience. Gracie had it all in spades. I loved her as a kid, and I love her now.
