Joyce Watkins on her exoneration after 34 years

In 1988 Joyce Watkins and her boyfriend, Charlie Dunn, were wrongfully convicted of a terrible crime: the murder of Watkins' 4-year-old great-niece, Brandi. Although the assistant medical examiner had made a critical mistake in their report, Watkins and Dunn's appeals were all denied. Now, more than three decades later, an unusual partnership of prosecutors and defense attorneys has brought about what the 74-year-old Watkins has long prayed for: exoneration. CBS News' Erin Moriarty reports.

How the DA can sleep at night keeping an innocent man in jail just because he doesnt want to admit they got it wrong or pay compensation is absolutely evil!!!!!

There are probably hundreds of them out there across the South and other parts of the USA. It is why criminal justice reform should include lifting prosecutorial immunity in cases where there is evidence of wrongdoing including malice, which is clearly the case here with the attorney general mentioned in the imprisoned man’s case.

So very sorry if this comes out as racist, because it's not intended; but see who's the DA that's maliciously standing in the way of,and see who's the person incarcerated. They have been doing this for generations,so they can sleep.

@@sharonfreeman1219 they’re not doing it so they can sleep. These government officials are entrenched in the system. It is very hard to move a person who has carte blanche from the public, who believes he can never be wrong, who believes that certain members of society can never be right, and who need not concern himself with the ramifications of his malicious decisions. That’s what we are looking at here. The ugly face of deep seated racism, severe corruption, and its impact on the poor and disenfranchised. Rich people get big time lawyers and walk away while the poor rot in prison even after their innocence is proven.

The fact that she requires a pardon after the court has ruled she is innocent is just a further affront to this tragedy. Further highlighting how terribly broken the justice system is in being able to correct itself. No one man should be the arbiter in this type of ruling, once cleared by the court she should be eligible for compensation and completely exonerated.

The person who called this woman to take care of the child was probably a relative , and was sitting right there in the courtroom when the case was dismissed. The sad thing is the poor lady might know who really killed the little girl but she's not putting two and two together. Most times an abuser is a family member or close family friend. When that person asked for them to take her they definitely knew what happened.

So why wasn't the person they pick the child up from wasn't put on trial and convicted with them. That person had to know what happen.

I truly cannot understand how it can be so easy to convict someone of something they did not do and yet take years (in some cases if ever) to get the correct verdict of innocent. How can this be allowed to continue! Thank you, to the prosecutors and defence attorneys, for coming together in these cases and doing what is right. It would be so refreshing if those who did get in wrong on these occasions, could say sorry and own it! As soon as the evidence is presented that shows a persons innocence - the misjustice must surely be corrected immediately - Not prolonged!

Sickening that a person could choose to keep someone they know is innocent in prison. A place theses attorneys couldn't even imagine themselves being for even a day but they can live with taking decades from someone. Terrible and Horrifying. This woman lost almost 30 years of her life. They need to compensate her millions so that what's left of her life is filled with nothing but good and wealth

What about Lamar Johnson? Are they going to stay with him and get him out of prison? The DA who won't cooperate should change places with him. This isn't about clogging up the system with appeals for wrongful convictions, this is about the stollen lives of the wrongfully convicted.

Crazy how racism makes them so hasty to sentence people to prison. But they can’t manage to do a proper investigation to find the true criminal, protect the truly innocent, etc. Just crazy.

I love kids I think they are our future .they are beautiful bright an innocent. what happened to this lady being put in prison is the very reason I never want any kids of my own. Today's society tell people how to raise they children.. I am truly sorry for what happened to that sweet little angel.... I also feel that there was somebody from the other residence that knows everything and kept quiet about it in other words a big cover-up it's all very sad......

I am sitting here absolutely devastated by this story. I am the same age as Joyce was in 1987 and the thought of spending the next 30 in prison is TERRIFYING!!! I read up on the case and family members need to be investigated. I'm still at a loss about why Brandie wasn't with her mother or grandmother when all this happened? If everyone thought the lady was abusive, why did she have the child. As for the son, who suddenly went ghost around the time of Brandie's death. I think there will likely be other victims of this devil. If the investigating officers who wrote up their reports a year later are still collecting pensions...it needs to be stopped immediately!!! The Kentucky Child Welfare office that glossed over complaints about Brandie's welfare should be sanctioned. The Harlans need to be under the jail! This was not only a miscarriage of justice...Justice was beaten and hung out to dry.
