Aaron I know this comment I'm making is belated but I just caught this video and this is a face-me component is a game changer. Thank you for your skill builder videos they have made me go from an intermediate SketchUp user to an advanced SketchUp user.

Man! Aaron, you just saved me tons of time doing objects (that I don't care about the shadow issue.) Last one, using a JPG, took me 2 hours. Didn't know about PNG. Now, as you said...less than 5 minutes. Thank you!!

Great Aaron but can you guys implement either an automatic way of clipping around the edge of the flowers, or let transparency sections of PNGs not cast shadows?

I also used the Image Tracer plugin from time to time if I didn't want to get into Photoshop as much. I think I saw that from something Daniel Tal did in a previous basecamp or blog post.

Hi Aaron, how would Sketchup use a 3D png? Will it remain in 3D?

Hi there, very cool. Is there now a way of giving the vase and the flowers a bit of a shape that it seems slightly 3d?

HI Aaron, thanks a lot for the video, i have a further question to last png steps, how to you resize the image frames to that the framed image is on the edge of the object?

Thanks for sharing. Yes a png file with transparency can save you work for indoor space modelling. But IMHO there are significant negatives and these negative steer me towards jpg. Firstly, for organic shapes jpg files are a LOT smaller in my experience. With trees and bushes for example I have jpgs one tenth the size of pngs without significant quality loss. Secondly despite their transparency I have found that pngs cast unrealistic rectangular shadows. This is ok for background tree lines when the shadows go unseen but no good for foreground trees.

Good call. Should have read your post first. Wouldn't have bothered posting mine.

If you use shadows, that i probably the biggest draw back. However, I will say that I tend not to use 2D components and shadows together, anyway as that only works if you align the "sun" and the camera correctly.

Rather than manually tracing in sketchup. If i really need to accurately trace the outline of any image. I use Image Trace in Adobe Illustrator and export the line works as Dwg. Import to sketchup and align it with my image. Draw backs will be the edge count but it depends on how detailed you want it. I use Edge tools Plugin to reduce edge count of the curves if necessary.

A very helpful video, thanks Aaron. Do you know if there are any good free photo editing apps out there that can be used to create png images? I don't have access to Photo Shop of anything like that. thanks again.

I know that GIMP is used a lot and I have heard good things (for free software), though I have not used it myself.

@@AaronMakingStuff GIMP? Awesome, I'll have a look. Thanks Aaron!! By the way, I've been tuning in to your Friday afternoon live broadcasts here on RU-vid -- very informative and entertaining as well. I've just gone back and watched AMTMA from a few months ago and enjoyed that one very much. Thanks for everything. Cheers!!

Thanks for the video Question - any insight on how to render these types of images in vray? If I apply an image with a transparent frame onto a surface, it doesn't seem to honor the image properly and render it as a poster/surface graphic. Any advice would be appreciated

Until you turn on shadows. Then the png will cast a rectangular (or whatever shape it is) shadow from the image whereas your 'cutout' one will cast a shadow in the shape of the bush, potplant, tree etc. Also worth considering.
@AaronMakingStuff
@AaronMakingStuff 5 лет назад
That is the down side, for sure. As I mentioned in other comments, I stay away from using shadows and face me components together )it's too much work to align the sun and cameras correctly)

I love using PNGs for these components, but they always cast the shadow of the full plane rather than just the image.

Colin Emch-Wei You can control the shadows per object by turning them on or off using cast or receive shadow.

Anyone here. Know a software that convert my png images into 3d object?
@ParadoxV5
@ParadoxV5 5 лет назад
Like: introduction to Sketch up users Dislike: No specifications regarding to the formats themselves. PNG supports transparency but are fat in size (and bad on performance), because it keeps every single pixel (tiny colored square) of the image; whereas JPEG is much lighter because, based on the image quality, skips details that are important to floor plans but unnecessary for people who stare at rose bushes.
