Inspired by Dan Brown and tradeshow booth creation in SketchUp, we take a look at how to add lighting to your SketchUp models. Follow along as we show you how to take transparent PNGs and place them into your model to simulate light beams and add depth.

Cool technique for those of us who haven't gotten into rendering yet! With Halloween around the corner, might be a fun way to add some ghostly visitors to the shadows of a dimly lit room! Thanks Aaron and Dan Brown!

Great share again. It plants a lot of ideas and shows enough to get you started. You're the right person for this job, Aaron.

Hi Aaron, quick suggestion...when you exploded the image at 4.10 the image would have been added to your material library. You could adjust the opacity of this material there that would turn up on down the intensity of the projected/light impression. thanks...!

Thanks Aaron .... I guess the best when it is used on walls, of course with correct pattern of light.

Sprinklers! Made me lol. No but seriously good demonstration if you're a sprinkler installer. Yep if I was doing something similar the image brightness would be reduced by 50%. Also another thought would be to simulate a spot light and project the image on a cone? Any thoughts?

How do you navigate smoothly like that? 3D mouse/space navigator? I feel like it's a must have

I don’t know that Aaron reads all comments but I would guess a 3D mouse as he’s on Mac.

Better project the light beams on a cone shape, that way the light source appears round on the floor & is more convincing.
@JSClements
@JSClements 4 года назад
Yes, a cone. But apply a totally transparent material to the back face (interior surface) of the cone so that when you look down the hallway the overlapping of the light rays of the other light sources are not too dense.

Also an option! Great thinking!

I suppose this works if you have a lot of particulates in the air and if you cannot see the floo

You cat take it even further. Change shadow settings to night time so that everything is dark and crank dark and light settings up. All your imported raster images will start to glow. Apparently your png light will glow as well.

These are wonderful and extremely useful videos. The issue for me is that there are so many of them and no real way (as I understand) to actually catalog them so they are easily searchable. I am certain that someone smarter than me can figure out a way to index them with more useful descriptions as to the content. That would be very useful to users at my level.

Very helpful, but you assume the viewer uses Photoshop, I actually don’t, I’m sure there are more of us. It would be great help if you could just post the link where we can download the file, he will also be great to have access to the models in your tutorial so we can practice particularly for this experience users like in my case

Nice trick! I think it's better to bring the opacity to half maybe, because now it looks more like a long room of five showers, like those built for soldiers or prisoners :-) Just joking. Great work Aaron.

Yeah... this is NOT something you would want to take into a renderer. In that case, you should be using actual light sources.

I can understand there are people that do not a render solution and then this is in any case a way to communicate the idea. However when i see this result and the duration of the total video........i'd prefer seeing the time you use, to make a render. I can to this in less then a minute giving light and all with a render plugin like enscape or unicorn. Why go for the real deal instead of this kind of fake solutions? Look here a training video that we made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3jQmN9M8BwQ.html

CADez BV Horses for courses, as they say. We hear from an amazing number of users who say their customers prefer the non-rendered look of SketchUp over a render... plus, this allows you to still move through the model in real time... something that a render prevents you from doing.
