JPMorgan Chase CEO goes Viral over Work-life Balance Comment | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has sparked controversy with his comments on work-life balance. An old video is making the rounds again, suggesting it's an individual's responsibility to manage the work-life balance, not the companies. Dimon's remarks have ignited a broader debate on who should bear the responsibility for achieving work-life balance. Who is responsible for work-life balance? Should work-life balance be a shared responsibility?

I used to work for Jamie Dimon and his "let them eat cake" attitude was very apparent in the Bank's toxic work environment. Always demanding more, always insisting "above and beyond" while wages stayed stagnant. Always cutting benefits and acting like they're helping you. They keep beating the "times are hard" drum and everyone needs to make sacrifices, as long as it's not them. Yes it was my job to take care of myself, so I quit. Because nobody on their deathbed wishes they did more for their boss.

Ruthlessly use your skills to get the max that you can get from your company....because that is EXACTLY what the company is doing to you. If you have the skills you can demand better pay/conditions or else tell them to fuck off...and you move on. ZERO involvement in a company other than the skills for which you are hired. The problem is that most people live WAY beyond their means but taking enormous loans to maintain an EMI filled "show off" lifestyle and therefore have very little wriggle room to negotiate with their company on a somewhat equal footing. Most will have to suck it up for at least 10 odd years.....but the ones who go minimalist during the 10 year period will have way better savings/investments and consequently fuck you money. That's when a savvy employee has an upper hand when it comes to negotiating a good deal with the company for good work life balance. 10/12 years of solid hands-on experience and you will be in demand.....and then the company needs you more.

If you work for JP Morgan. You will realise it is not possible to have a work life balance. Because the work load is so high. It is impossible to log off on time. Your manager will expect you to complete your work on time even if the volumes are high. They are always understaffed because most of the managers want to show efficiency by reducing employees that's the main problem and even if you want to hire an employee to replace another who had left the team. the approval to get a new employee could take minimum 4 Months and the manager will have to give justification why they need a new employee. Most managers wouldn't want to go through this hassle so they try not to get a new employee. Jamie should try to sort this problem rather than blaming the employees for not having a work life balance. Worst part is your manager will question you why are you updating overtime. I cannot approve it. So they try not to show overtime at all. They never used to pay for overtime. Now they tell the employees not to update the exact overtime. So that you don't have to pay them.

@@StephenCreagh-jm9ug It was, in the end, the government's decision to engineer a bailout for the major banks, so the banks took the best that they can. You cannot just blame the banks for everything; you also have to blame the government. Did you know that banking is one of the most regulated industries, even before 2008? As for your question, yes, it did help the wealthy people immensely, but it also saved the money of millions of Americans that had deposited in their banks. Also remember that most people cannot buy a house and a car without the banks; most startups wouldn't exist without the banks; most businesses (large or boutique), where you buy your favorite products from, cannot function efficiently without the banks. Collapsing of the banks would have led to a real economic depression. In a free market capitalism, the banks would have been left to collapse, but the cronies, who wouldn't exist without all these government regulation, made sure that they got bailed out of this.
@gimei-chan
@gimei-chan 23 дня назад
@@StephenCreagh-jm9ug you are correct that his wealthy friends stayed wealthy, but he wasn't the one who helped the most --- the government did. If this had happened a 100 years ago, those wealthy bankers would have gone bankrupt. In the old days of colonialism, people were forced to work as slaves without any benefits (Master and Slave). In today's modern world, with human rights and so on, this has transformed into employment with no work-life balance and low pay (Employer/Employee). From ruling another land as a colony to calling it an overseas territory, it's the same old story, just under a different name. The point is that certain exploitative practices from the past may have been rebranded but still persist in different forms today. The shift from overtly oppressive systems like slavery and colonialism to more subtle forms of exploitation in modern employment and geopolitical relationships suggests that while the terminology and outward appearances have changed, the underlying dynamics of power and inequality often remain.

One of the biggest reason for work life imbalance most employees experienced is contributed by managers and all managers' reporting leads back to the CEO. So that's a load s*** of bull when he says it's not his job. Employees are asked to do what should've been done by his manager. Employees are doing 2 person work because the other guy is leaving on time for happy hour with the boss. Employees are doing overtime because resources are limited during normal work hours. Employees are working on weekends because incompetent managers come up with work schedules on Friday, not Monday. Yeah, all these are the doings of employees eh Mr. Dimon?

The reality is, if you're in the kinds of jobs where you have Jamie Dimon in the management team above you, you're probably getting lots of perks to 'destress' and lots of benefits. So it comes down to how ambitious you are vs wanting 'balance' in your life now. You're competing with the other employees who are equal to you in ambition. So how ambitious are you right now? Well that is entirely up to you. It's the workers at places that don't pay much and don't give any paid time off (or massages/pilates) that have little choice. They either work enough to pay the rent or become homeless.

@Kevin-jc1fx
@Kevin-jc1fx 23 дня назад
The implications are disingenuous. Of course you are responsible for your choices, however, your company imposes a lot of choices on you and you can't just do as you please. They decide where you work, when you work there, who you work with, what you work on and this takes up the largest portion of your time. If that time is made miserable, there is little to nothing you can do in the remaining time to offset that. Hence the company has a big responsibility in this.

Very often it is frowned upon to fully take advantage of it, that's why. When you violate those unwritten rules, they make you pay for it one way or the other. Of course, they will not say that was the reason but if you are a bit smart, you'll understand. Companies with unlimited PTO tend to have less people taking time off than a capped time off company. Of course, officially you can but you will be seen as not being a team player or some other nonsense like this. They will be harsher with you during performance reviews and you won't be considered for promotions. If there are layoffs, you will be first in line. Those can be some retaliations for fully using the benefits you are given.

Work-life balance is a work of the community. No one can do it alone. Companies MUST create a healthy environment. They are stupid because when you have a family-friendly environment you have more productivity. Period. But, ultimately he is right! People need to take matters in their own hands. Use your sick days, vacation. Take LOA whenever the law allows it. Exchange shifts with your coworkers wherever possible. Change your job if you don’t feel happy. Don’t be greedy. Create a budget at home and when you meet your expectations don’t seek more. Prioritize time with your family and kids. That’s it.
@ragus1416

From my perspective, work-life balance is mostly related to individuals. If you really want to move higher and higher in your career and up the ladder quickly, you need to pay the price, which in this case is your personal life. If you want to maintain a work-life balance, then you should not expect quick career growth or rapid ascension up the ladder. You might view other employees on your team as challengers, prompting you to work more hours to move faster than your colleagues. It is up to individual choice. Some of us want to climb the career ladder quickly and are willing to sacrifice personal life for it. Others prefer to work only the stipulated hours and move slowly up the career ladder. I see both types of people in the company. When the choice is yours, please don't blame the company.
