Agreed on safety having had a few scary incidents happen…. Latest one was on ascent, the compact non jamming hitch slipped down into my garda and gave me a problem, i got a little anxious as I was stuck! I was low enough to just slip out of my saddle, so been thinking about that if I were higher up on the rope, could have put on an agile above the compact, then stood up and move up both the compact and agile, and adjust the compact. Thought I had tuned the compact correctly but apparently my hitch cord had some slack in it, turns out it was a 4-2-3 instead of 5-2-3 . From now on I will always have the agile on along with the compact, climbs since this incident have gone just fine and I love the agile hitch, just have to adjust the tail to be correct to not take weight before the JRB compact, but catch that bridge if there is any slip with the compact. And yes ALWAYS have a cord on the rope when removing , you just never know, an edge of a bark scale can jam you up.

"Safety is not about luck. Safety is about taking an analytical approach and building the right system and having the right knowledge" (1:45). This comment is worthy of serious thought and reflection; it can lead to a way of acting by which the risk of unexpected occurrences can be reduced in order to stabilize and recover. I always gain knowledge from your videos. Thank you.

There are entire disciplines and standards devoted to this topic across multiple industries. Do some research on topics like: Risk Analysis, Hazard Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. Do some research on accident investigations, not limited to climbing. Summarizing greatly: We strive to identify potential failure modes and mitigate them. We strive to detect potential hazards and hazardous situations before they lead to harm. We strive to avoid accidents of any kind with robust designs which are fault tolerant. And we strive to learn from mistakes or accidents which have transpired. Often, an accident is caused by a series of events, not just a single event. And we need a mitigation for everything.

You are extremely thorough it’s very impressive. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. Speaking for myself, you give me a heap of confidence in my climbing.

Thx. I do try to take some time to make a list of the points that I want to cover and then do my best to deliver it without a script. I look back at a few of my earliest videos and find them a little bit embarrassing. I'm just trying to do a better job now.

@@jonpeterson8510 you're welcome. The same thought process should be exercised with any climbing method or system.

Do you recommend keeping the Garda hitch on when you're hunting at height? One possible failure mode of a friction hitch could be a broadhead slicing the cord (e.g. you slipped while maneuvering for a shot). Not a problem if your Garda hitch is engaged like you demonstrated in this video. But I can't recall if previous videos have recommended keeping the Garda hitch on while hunting. It does have some potential to get bumped and make noise since it would be around hip height, would that actually be a problem in practice? Anyway, thanks as always for the well thought out video. It is also a good idea for people to think through worst case scenarios when your life is literally on the line.
