Celebration Bowl Battle of the Bands Drumline Battle 2022 WT vs. DOA Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South vs. North Carolina Central University Sound Machine (JSU vs NCCU) December 17, 2022
As an HBCU section leader from the 90s, a huge mistake that many (not all) "modern" HBCU percussion sections are making is not fully understanding who they are playing for. Are you playing for the crowd, or are you playing for the other section? We generally played for the crowd. I was All-State, so I know I could chop with the best of them. However, when both sections were done, what would the crowd say? Never in the history of percussion battles has an average crowd participant said, "damn those snares were choppin!" Lol!! That's not to say to disregard skills, rudiments, etc. However, many sections are losing the performance and excitement elements of HBCU percussion sections, which make us stand apart from PWI and DCI percussion sections. Most of all, you have to jam. Both sections were OK. However, neither were totally in the pocket, and neither had the crowd saying "damn that was tight." WT would have gotten a bigger reaction by ending with a funk train.
Both lines could tune their six packs and quints better to cut through. With the low pitch snares, mid-range tenors and mid range Quints everyone is in the same relative tonal area. Both sections’s snare drums were probably a little too wet. Still it looks like they all had fun, so that is always a win.
You talking about the same "cold steel" that ran from DOA twice this year? hm 🤡😂 The cold steel approach is to run from a challenge they can't win. the cs approach is putting a circus act on drums. That's weird to bring them up when this video has nothing to do with them but hey, since you brought it up go watch the videos of them hiding on the bus while being called out!
@Earl GreenIII I haven't seen videos of CS dropping sticks, but I have seen THIS video of DOA doing that. I HAVE seen a video of CS killing on the DCI stage. Maybe they don't want to waste their time with DOA. Get your game up, and maybe they'll accept your challenge 🤷🏾♂️
Listened to this battle about 5 times before watching it. from an audio only perspective, that WT is more tastefully executing their material . DOA has very choppy material but the overall cadences are busy to the point that I had to make myself enjoy it. I find myself nodding much more often at WT..everything sounded more intentional and imposing. They’ve figured out their balance of chopping, dynamics, and aggression to present more tasteful material. Dirt from both sides but one is easily more enjoyable and more impressive imo. After watching, I’m just more captivated by WT. Cymbals are a prime example.
@ Centel Artis 😂😂😂😂 We have been grooving for a while and the only thing you can say was WT was stiff but you didn’t deny the fact that is at hand. NCCU was sloppy, played with no control, being fancy and dropping there sticks. If you really want to get technical about it, the second cadence that they played,is the sixlet or six stroke roll supposed to be bounced or crushed because some snares were playing crushed rolls and some were playing the rudiment the way it’s supposed to be played. At the end of the day my brother this is not reaching these are observations and WT was clean, uniform, and on the played the ictus on point. It’s ok I see that with a lot of MEAC Lines because they tend to focus on the theatrical and not the rudimentary aspect. My apologies except for MFDS (NSU).
Everyone pay attention to the comments about nccu vs jsu yall tell me who got the wins it looks like nccu um not a fan of nccu always have been a jsu fan but lately alot drumlines have been getting real close to them jsu change your playing technique
whats wrong with using a grid as a callout? is that bad? dont really know much since im a freshman snare.. i heard that any material can be used as a callout. (thats what im assuming the grid was used for)
@aetrnas if it's a line that aint no comp then it would have been one thing, but jackson gonna go hard from jump so why dish out cheese and crackers when you know they going str8 for meat and potatoes. The same for a line that's on a lower level, don't use your good stuff on them when you can play a simple flam grid and chop them.
War & Thunder smashed them EZ! WT the best drum section there is we birthed a lot of drum sections down south! We definitely ain’t have nun to do with DOA playing like a PWI! I can speak for the SWAC and say we definitely have the HBCU standards down! Take notes ! 🎶 📝 😮 #SonicBoomOfTheSouth #War&Thunder
