I get excited easily, at least that's what my wife tells me ;P. I am very excited to check out the Arendal speakers. I wish I could have at least unboxed them, but they came the day before I had to fly out of town for work...so I had to be patient and wait.
I received two jtr captivator 2400 last week after waiting 3 months and they are lights out! Moved up from SVS pb16 Ultra and there really is no comparison
Yup did my one jtrcaptivator ulf just before covid! And i have two pb16ultra also in my 6 sub system with my Anthem Avm90 and Founder120 speakers! Plus buttkickers! Yes they rock
Funk Audio, Harbottle and JTR twice. You have had the hardest hitting, quality subs around. I wonder if you are going to keep these? Doesn’t matter, you only live once and I enjoy watching your videos.
haha that's right, I am just blessed to be able to review and test awesome pieces of equipment like this. I don't have any current plans to sell these, but who know what will happen. As you probably know, I have to sell my gear to bring in new gear for review, so if I do end up selling them, it will be for that reason, because I do love them!
I’m guessing they positioned the plate amplifier like that so that you could turn them on their sides below your screen to the left and right of your center
Nice review I have a svs pb 2000. I was looking at the rythmik sealed 18 but I think I might get the jtr rs1..looking forward to the jtr 110 ht review..im gonna buy the 110 sl for my height channels
The small room is actually amazing. Just get rid of the 33 Hz peak via EQ and you have a flat reponse all the way down to 14 Hz and to way 60-70 Hz where you don't need a sub anyway. Crazy performance! Tho, obviously, I would choose big room for the low end extension since human hear works like it works, where lower notes can be heared quiter even with a flat response, so you need a boost just to perceive them as as loud as higher notes.
Best decision I ever made in my system for movies and music was going JTR for subwoofers. I currently own a JTR Cap 4000. I’d like to add another one, but as you said they are not small or light for that matter…
former dual cap4000 owner here. the cap's definitely offer a very thick, violent bass i've yet to experience elsewhere. it's just a shame that the 2400 will run you 70% of the cost of a 4000. if it were closer to 50% i think jeff would sell a lot more of them. the plate amps are one of the main reasons i sold mine though. i think if you're looking for the most firepower possible from a turn-key product look no further than jtr. for myself, i'm looking for something crazier that i can repair myself if needed so it'll be diy from here out. nice vid as always, cheers.
Can anyone let me no were they are setting there volume and the bass boost I don't want to max it out I just want a little more punch in the higher frequency I have 2 of them in a smaller room the lows are there I was running 4 pb2000 stack on each other and im kinda missing the higher frequency of those I no these can do it im just not gonna start cranking the volume up and damage them before I get a opion from someone who owns them I should probably call and see if I can get ahold of Jeff but hopping some how someone can reach me threw here and give me advice thanks
Great video enjoyed till the end. I agree with you on the performance of the JTR subs. I've had a Captivator 4000ULF for several years now and would recommend it to anyone who asks, however I've had an issue from time to time. I have several 20amp lines run to my theater and have several Panamax 5300s and when I push it for several hours, which I do often, it shuts the Panamax that it's plugged in to. So I bought a Middle Atlantic 20amp line conditioner and it has shut it down maybe 2 times. Now it hasn't shut down in a while and I hope I didn't jinx it. Love it performance wise though. Also I know the 5300s are only 15amps.
Awesome, the CAP4000 is an impressive piece of gear. It sounds like the power conditioners can't handle the draw of the CAP4000. Have you ever run the CAP4000 straight out of the outlet to see if you run into any tripped breakers?
@@SpecOfTech actually no I always thought if something happened and it was on one the Panamax their warranty would cover it. I will try that. I ran so many 20 amp lines that I have a few open. I figured since I was running lines I might as well run a bunch for future expansion. Thanks for replying 🤙
There is no real comparison between something like the PB3000 and the CAP2400. The 2400 out performs the PB300 in absolutely every way, and by a large margin. That being said, if you budget only allows for the PB3000, you could do worse, but you could also do better. The PB3000 does have a nice throaty bass sound with decent output, but you can find better output for less in Rythmik subs or DIY.
The awesome thing about subs is that you really can beat the best of the best if you put some sweat in and its not technically difficult with winisd etc. These subs are amazing but it makes me smile when that much money is the best bang for buck as far as commercial subs. Thanks for the video.
Great review! I had the Captivator 1400 before they discontinued it and replaced it with the 2400. I freaking loved it for movies and music. It was tight sounding and slammed like no other sub I have owned!
If you don't mind me asking, I noticed while using REW all the background is black. Was there a setting that you use to make it black? Or a Different version of REW? My background is all white and I like the black
I wanted to try the ported version for the extra low end output. Overall, I do prefer capable sealed subs. With sealed there is no risk of port noise and they are generally smaller in size, making them easier to place.
Barrett in your own opinion will a company like JTR ever make it possible to buy within Canada without the huge shipping costs as well as Duty . would love to own a couple of these captivators.
Unfortunately, I don't think so. They are just big and heavy, in addition to that shipping costs have gone up significantly since Covid with no sign of decreasing. I do hope that a Canadian company eventually makes something comparable to JTR for a similar price, but that may be wishful thinking.
Hi Barrett, would you mind to mention your RT60? And if it changes with different subs? RT60 is recorded with each measurement so it could be easy to find out. Thanks
The rs2 is still more powerful specially digging lower based on the measurements you did before, right? Is there anythijg the 2400 (1 of them) do better than the RS2? Thanks
Oh yeah, the RS2 has more output, especially in the higher octaves, and pretty similar in the lower frequencies. The only thing I noted that the CAP2400 MIGHT do better, is they seem to have a little more kick to them. I was thinking that it may have to do with it being ported.
@SpecOfTech kick...I kind of like that so maybe I will go with the 2400. Did you sell the rs2 or can you do a comparison video still? Thanks for the great info!
Hey! Do you know if JTR uses Stereo Integrity for their subwoofers? It seems like they do. Their 18" in the 2400 and 4000 subwoofers have almost identical specs to ST's HST-18. If JTR does indeed use Stereo Integrity, you could instead buy ST's HST-18 or their crazy 24" driver, a GSG Audio flatpack, and have JTRs for a fraction of the price. Well..... maybe not a fraction but going the GSG route does give a significant discount.
@@SpecOfTech I saw that. They for sure use a form of the Lab12 and Lab15 in their Noesis line and some sort of Eminence driver for their atmos line. They use BMS coaxial compression drivers for their horns. But I am almost positive they're using Stereo Integrity for their subs. Hopefully they'll be willing to spill the beans at MWAVE this year. I'll be there!
@Spec of Tech bro , totally feel u. I just got a new JTR RS2 totally blown me OFF , the heavy brute slam, force , wind flapp, TR, output for me is the best of the best for HT ! :) Ex Dual Rythmik FV18s Owner here cheers. Enjoy HT! :) Always love u videos thanks so much! Enjoy u ported JTR 2400s Cheers! One word - ENDGAME SUBS! :)
The RS2 is an AMAZING subwoofer, fantastic choice brother. What are the differecnes you noticed between the RS2 and FV18? I have been curious about the Rythmik subs.
@@SpecOfTech Rythmik have Servo with articulate tight bass which i think movie\music lover will enjoy it. Rythmik have the very punchy bass signature which I love it a lot since :) Had PSA V1811 ported before - PSA for me have the thickest txture bass. Cheers
I have approached Rythmik, but they weren't willing to send me one for review. To buy them for the purpose of review they wanted full price, they didn't seem interested in having their subwoofers reviewed by a Canadian. Sorry man, unless that changes, I doubt I will ever review them.
Thanks for doing these reviews. It is giving a lot of us who are looking into creating their HT, have a lot of information that they can churn on, and make an educated decision. I cant wait for your Arendal reviews, I have the Arendal 1961 in my living room, and I love them. Debating if i should go Arendal or JTR for HT.
Thanks for the comment brother. I like to hear that my videos are helpful, I am truly trying to help those of you out there looking at these products. I am pumped to try the Arendal 1723's, they sure do look perfect on paper.
If I could turn back time I would keep the RS2's, they have amazing performance in a somewhat manageable size. The CAP2400's are close in the low end, but they aren't quite as violent, nor do they have quite the heft as the RS2's.
My issue has been finding a pair of subs that are capable of showcasing the low end below 20 hz for music but also the room shaking bass for movies. I was looking at the RS1 as I feel it would be capable of doing both. Ported seems to muddy the bass for music in my experience. I would assume the RS1 is big enough and powerful enough to produce the bass Im looking for in movies too.
Do you like ported version more than sealed? Have you ever felt that RS1 would've been a better option based on the fact you used to have RS2? Or is ported better experience in your opinion?
Well the 2400 had similar output below 25hz, when compared to the RS2. The RS1 would sacrifice around 6db or possibly a little more to the RS2 throughout the frequency range. Personally I do prefer a capable sealed subwoofer over ported, but the CAP2400 is one of the best performing ported subs on the market, so I am not really lacking in any way with them.
@@SpecOfTech Thanks. In your RS2 review you provided REW measurments down to 5 hz. In this video you go only down to 10hz. With the port optimized for 10hz, I'm curious what does the measurement look like below 10hz? Does it drop sharply or lingers a little bit?
Great video! makes me want to buy!!! What strikes me as impressive is the fact that the JTR's can blow the hair off your head in a HT setting, and still integrate in a stereo listening scenario. The Sonus Faber Sonetto VIII are a fast, accurate speaker. As you said, the JTR's blend well, keeping up with the VIII's. Monster subs are generally frowned upon in the "audiophile" world. Brands like REL are favored. REL's aren't cheap!!! What you have described is a testament to the impressive quality of the JTR's!! Well done!!!👍👍
Thanks for the insightful comment John, I can always count on you haha. I hope you are enjoying the new Nurprime set up, I can't wait to hear it in person!
@@chet9055 You can mix sealed with ported, but it isn't really recommended. You more than likely would run into some problems, with the 2 subs working against each other at certain frequencies. It would take work and most likely a minidsp to get them to work well together. If I were you, if you do plan on adding another subwoofer, I would add another PB4000.
If I might ask, what do you have your gain set at as well as low-frequency set at on the subwoofer? I'm receiving a lot of Port noise that I do not think is normal. I do not believe that I'm running anything too hot. I'm just curious because I'm sure it's not normal with JTR.
I think in his other video about the CAP 2400 Barrett said that he ran into that same problem with the port noise and he found out that it was the ARC room correction software that was causing the issue. After he disabled ARC it solved the problem. Hope this helps :)
@SpecOfTech at the cost of 2 to 1? Also I would assume the JTRs would be better. Just wanted to know where the 16 ultra's fit in with al the subs you've demo'd
@@Jessersadler My personal opinion is, buy SVS for the looks and for brand loyalty. If you are looking for performance, they lag behind the competition. The PB16's even have less output than the $1299 Tonewinner subs I just reviewed. I will be releasing that video next week. I love the way SVS look, but their performance is seriously lacking unfortunately.
I have Hsu Research subs and I am happy with them. But I am thinking ahead about end-game subs some time in the future. Unless significant developments occur with other companies, it seems like JTR or Perlisten subs are the best end-game options (without going into 5 figures per sub.) If you ever have the opportunity, I would love it if you could review any of Perlisten's dual-driver subs. You have so much experience with JTR that it would be incredibly useful to the audiophile and HT communities if you could do a comprehensive review and comparison to Perlisten some time in the future. But whether you do or not, thank you for this and all of your videos!
I am glad to do this, and I truly hope it does help all the great guys in this awesome community. I would love to get my hands on a Perlisten dual 15" unit. I don't currently have a connection with Perlisten, but who knows what the future will bring. I would be glad to review one of their subwoofers if they were willing to send me one.
I got a whole house full of RTJ/JTR subs and they take everything I throw at them , I’ve had roughly 200-250 people over to my place for demos we just had one 2-3 months ago with 50 people over … everyone really enjoys them
Haha yeah your system is something else to behold. What are you at now 9 18" drivers or somewhere around there? The Scott Newby setup is legendary lol, thanks for watching.
Thanks man, … I run 6 of the Captivator 6000’s in the theater, which is largest Captivator using a 6000 watt rms 240v amp in each , so 12-18’s on 36,000 rms in the theater. Then I’m running 4 of the RTJ subs in the living room on the 2.1 setup and those see 2400 each … we just hit 150db in the theater at the head rest of the MLP using a term lab calibrated microphone… been a lot of fun
@@SpecOfTech I dont think jls send out subwoofer demos sadly, but they sound amazing. Only downside is you pay for that premium gloss black finish and the amp/driver, a Fathom f110 is 4k and the f112 is 5k, at that price you can buy JTR so unless you really need a smaller enclosure on your sub JTR seems like the way to go. I still want to hear JTR one day, also im thinking of upgrading to Sonetto 5s and the Sonetto center 2 so thanks barret for doing videos on them.
I just put in an order for one of these bad boys ;) Can't wait to get it into my home and put it through it's paces! Your videos are the reason I finally pulled the trigger on the CAP 2400 :) I'll let you know what I think of it after I test it out a while. Thanks for all the content you create on RU-vid man. Your channel is one of my favorites. Keep up the great work!
@@SpecOfTech I finally got my CAP 2400 and I've had a chance to put it through it's paces with movies and music and I have to say it's the best sounding sub I have ever heard. I totally do not regret my decision. I now know why everyone on the internet ravs about JTR subs. Once again man thanks for all you do on RU-vid and keep making these great videos. They really help people make a decision on what they want to buy. 😃👍
@@IECStang That's amazing brother. I am very glad to hear that you are so happy with the CAP2400. I am also happy that my video helped you out, after all, that's what it's all about...helping the community. Let me know when you get a second 😜.
The reason for the placement of the amp is that the port literally wraps all the way around the inside of the enclosure for that ultra low tuning. It even turns a 45 degree angle on the top rear to miss the amp and take advantage of every inch in there. Pull it out and have a look. You'll quickly see what I'm talking about :).
Ar-En-Dal (doll) .. Im sure the guys at the brand will say the name a few times. It's actually a town name where the family business was located. =) I read in to their story when I applied for a job offer last year =)
Better in the sense it is less than 1/3 the price, and still has impressive output, then yes. The LFE24 has a nicer finish and more output, but his prices have gone up considerably over the last couple years. Ultimately, "better" is subjective to the individual, and often the goal post moves as well.
LOL for the audio demos I literally heard nothing (meaning I have crappy speakers on my PC haha!) but enjoyed that driver bounce. Enjoy your new subs mate.
haha I have a video idea for you...computer sound system upgrade ;P. I mean what self respecting audio enthusiast doesn't have a desktop setup that can shake things off the desk...just sayin! lol JK. Thanks for watching brother!
The PSA were quite flat as well, but it was measured in the front left of my room ,whereas the CAP2400 was measured in the front right. But you are right, they are both very flat in my space!
Great review. Enjoying my Cap 2400 so much that I put in an order for the mighty Cap 4000ULF, mostly due to curiosity than anything else. I certainly don’t need the extra output lol. I too have had a lot of subs pass through my home theater over the years and JTR is truly end of the road for me. I can’t imagine a brand switch after hearing the extension, the output, and that thick and weighty JTR sound signature. It’s that good!
I am 100% with you on that. I can't imagine switching brands or finding something better. Who knows though, there are a lot of subwoofers out there haha. That CAP4000 will be insane. I plan on putting my 2 CAP2400's together and measuring them just to see, because with the 2 together they should act very similar to a CAP4000.
I would like to add a question and a point one. Where was your RS two placed and when you showed the REW measurement was that just one of them I know it's a door subwoofer but if I remember correctly it would hit 116 dB at 10 Hz that's eight more decibels. Yes, I understand two drivers more power, but steel a sealed box, that ported box should've helped gain more output in my opinion because he does tune his ported designs at 10 Hz my point that is also probably where he put why he put the amplifier where he put it if he really tunes these 210 Hz that port in that box is very very long and probably takes up the majority of the back wall in that box the only reason I'm saying this is I have looked at Portland calculators versus toning frequency and when you start getting under about 1718 Hz port length really starts getting really long
I did do a video that showed the RS2 in the front right corner of my room. You are right it hit around 116 db. Granted that was with my AVM70 and the measurements for the CAP2400 were using the AVM90. I am not sure if that would introduce any differences, but it's worth noting. I can't explain when there is a difference their, but it's possible that room gain also works on each individual driver. Which could explain why the RS2 far exceeds it's CEA2010 numbers in my room and why the CAP2400 does exceed it's CEA2010 numbers but by a smaller margin. Maybe there is someone smarter than me, who understands bass acoustics better that could chime in.
Thanks for the support my friend. I have fallen behind due a busy out of town work schedule. I hope to release a comparison between the Emotiva and AVM90 in the next 4 weeks. Hopefully I can release the review of the RMC-1L around the same time.
@@SpecOfTech With the help of your review, I took Anthem AVM 70 satisfied with the purchase, everything without errors, only one hdmi bypass, no sound for milliseconds, I think it will disappear with the new update
One other question on your PSA 3612 you mentioned to someone else that was in the front left corner once again with your room measurements was that one 3612 or both 3612. Thank you.
Well I had done several different videos with measurements and showed measurements of a single in the front left, and measurements of the front left and nearfield sub. The JTR are just a different animal compared to PSA subwoofers. The PSA measure well, but they don't have near the authority and heft that the JTR have.
@@jaker8107 OK please correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that model typically come with a 1920 W RMS amplifier my question is is the amplifier upgrade upgrade it to the new 4000 W continuous that the 3613 models have
great video, one thing is jtr isnt doing custom finishes i have caps on order and i wish they were i have to find someone to do it which sucks cuz theyre not easy to move around but yup just wanted to let you know unless somethings changed theyre not currently offering that.
Great review man, just need paradigm to lend ya the Sub 2 to throw into the mix. Curious how it would stack up against some of your past heavy hitters. I think you've pretty much had all the best of the best aside from moving to infinite baffle and horn subs.
YES! I am waiting for the day that Paradigm agrees to send me a Sub 2. I know they aren't the top of the list for output, but for a small package, I have no doubt it would impress.
Really would love to have one or two of them but I just don't have space. I missed you last week and surprised to see you this weekend. The last video you dropped you talked about how busy you've been. All in all I love seeing your content and looking forward to the next one because I know you have a lot in front of you so keep up the good work.
Thanks brother! I was home for 2 weeks, but my parents were out for about 8 days visiting. I ended up skipping 2 weekends of videos to hang out with the family. I am still flat out, but back on track to release 1 video a week again...God willing.
Cost aside, I’m a bit more drawn to the Harbottle sub you had because of the looks and weight compared to the jtr. Performance wise from 1-100 how would you rate the jtr and the Harbottle 24.?
In all honesty the RS2 out performed the C24. I have dropped a video link below where I showed their compression testing measurements in my room and the RS2 edged out a win there. When it comes to sound quality, I honestly couldn't hear a difference. They were both a heavy thick quality bass, I doubt anyone could hear a difference when A/B comparing. My personal opinion is that you are paying a hefty premium for the C24 carbon fiber finish. Sure, it does look amazing & badass, but you have to ask your self if the look is worth it when comparing it to a slightly better performing RS2? I hope that helps...cheers.
I’ve always been curious to experience JTR subs. I am definitely curious how they compare to my DIY subs to get an idea of how far away they are in performance. On a different note, II can’t imagine enjoying room rattles. I’ve spent so much time and effort stomping them out of my room. Worth the effort, but not an easy task when you’re pushing serious bass. Anyway, looking forward to the Arendal review.
Really would love to have one or two of them but I just don't have space. I missed you last week and surprised to see you this weekend. Great video! One question was this review and settings based off just 1 cap or 2 or 3 like I think u mentioned you bought? I’m really trying to figure out if I was the ported JTR or not. Could you do a video or just a comment diving deeper between the two on these 2 JTR series?
The review and the measurements were based on 1 CAP2400. I had bought 3, but I quickly realized that 2 was plenty, and sold the third one locally. You want me to compare the RS2 to the CAP2400?
@@SpecOfTech Awesome thanks for clarifying. I was wondering how crazy 3 of them would be! Any insight you have between the JTR sealed RS's vs Cap's would be appreciated. I think I'm 100% sold on JTR but now keep on flopping between Ported and Sealed.
Greetings, so I wound up with the CAP4000. I was curious if you have ever taken a listen to the other JTR speakers? I'm looking at upgrading my front 3 at and least my center because I have a deftech demand front 3 and the center just is just not cutting it. Thanks!
Let’s be real a subwoofer 97% of the time a subwoofer is never too big for a room we simply just don’t want to accommodate said subwoofer, lol just saying. I really liked this video I noticed a different energy more engaging enthusiastic relatable engaging energy that was very welcoming. I very much enjoyed your passion in this video and the fact you’re the only person I know doing stuff like this on yt, like measuring with rew stuff from jtr. And I’m pretty sure you were talking to me when you mentioned someone commented the cap4k was the sweet spot heh, My opinion it still is but I get different people have different opinions. Take space out of the equation hands down 4k is and even with space in the in the equation is the sweet spot. You’re getting basically two cap2400s in one for 2000$ less. Question is are you willing to accommodate the extra money or the extra space. Now I’m just waiting for you to return those puny little baby subwoofer for the king captivator4000ulf and to see some measurements on those puppies and your reaction. You like the weight behind those notes just imagine now what a cap4k is capable of in your room or two of them or three maybe 4. I’ll be waiting patiently… lol
lol I don't know, the LFE24 Ultra and CAP4000 take up a lot of space. You are very observant my friend...this entire video was unscripted and just me talking. I was so busy I didn't have time to write my thoughts down, but I really wanted to get this video out so I just winged it. That's probably why it ended up being so long, I ramble sometimes. I don't really like doing the videos like this because I don't feel like I am a good public speaker. haha I believe it was you that originally mentioned that the CAP4000 is the sweet spot, and it definitely can be for some. I still feel the CAP2400 is the sweet spot IMO, simply given the price, size and performance. BUT, with that said my all time favorite still is the RS2. It isn't that much bigger than the CAP2400, but has significantly more performance, but again, the price is the slight drawback there. In all honesty, you can't really lose regardless of which JTR you pick, their performance is killer for their relative price range. lol I don't need to return the CAP2400's to experience the CAP4000. If I put these 2 2400's together, or stack them, they will perform VERY similar to a CAP4000. I get to experience the CAP4000 without paying the price or dealing with the size 😜. To be fair, if I ever have a larger dedicated room, I would most likely go with 2 - 4 CAP4000's :).
@@SpecOfTech lol I was just giving you a hard time about your cap2400 those are some beautiful bois you have there enjoy my friend. But still the cap4k must be experienced muahahaha 🦹♂️
