It is quite incredible to see how nifty WWII technique was, especially given the relative limitations compared to our time. It is even more incredible that the technique of our days allows anyone with a (quite) decent computer to actually experience their workings themself by playing modern day flight simulators like IL2.

Seriously you are the only person actually explaining this stuff in a clear, concise, and accessible format. The game must be losing new players because of how little effort is put into making the kind of tutorial content that you are and the fact that they aren't focussing on this more is really shocking. Thank you so much man.
@RequiemsACTL

I appreciate that Juke, the devs of Il-2 have never really worried about needing to do tutorials as I can cover that stuff for the most part. They don't really have the budget for it and they don't pay me to do them. I just try and show techniques that were used in RL where possible without needless time wasting. I like to keep my videos structured as if I was teaching my own flight students in RL

@arprince31 8 месяцев назад
@@RequiemsACTL Hah! This has been doing my head in the last few days. Although the command is 'Dive recovery system: on/off', which suggests you may need to switch it on or off manually, there's no indication in the techchat or the view of the cockpit that anything has happened, so I've been trying missions without doing anything to the controller, which I've mapped to Key 9, then trying another mission pressing Key 9 once, then another mission hitting Key 9 twice to see what happens regarding autorecover and I've not noticed any difference - I hit the ground with a resounding 'thump'. I know this wasn't working in 2018 due to comments on forums at the time but was implemented with update 4.002 in November 2019. Yours is the first comment that I've understood that indicates that although the audio warning works the auto pullout doesn't, or at least only works marginally. I do like the audio warning, I have an unhealthy tendency to get fixated on hitting the target and can leave it too late to pull out, so the audio warning works and is sufficient for me. I've read articles about the front line squadrons switching off the system as planes were delivered, so I think the audio only is a reasonable reflection of what the crews actually experienced. I don't need to worry about blacking out due to high g in the simulator, so don't need the auto recovery to actually save my life. This is a good compromise. Please et me know if I've missed or misinterpreted anything!

They did away with the dive recovery system early in the war. It makes no sense why people have bitched and complained for years for it to be in the game... well they got it, and it's historically inaccurate. People need to read memoirs of the pilots, not just read spec sheets of planes.

Is it possible to use the dive brakes with the inverted method? Or at least without having the plane push it's nose down? Or can you still use the dive brakes independently of the auto pullout feature?
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
You can still use the dive brakes with the inverted method John because the auto entry/recovery system relies only on that right elevator trim input. You would just need a little extra back pressure on your end to counteract what would be a nose up tendency (because you're inverted) when starting downhill. Right now though the dive brakes this automatic system are linked, but maybe in the future it will be made into a modification.

Hi The Air Combat Tutorial Library been trying to do the inverted version but finding abit difficult to know what angle my attack is, also when you say apply some back pressure does that mean pullling on the stick? and do you use any elevator trim at all? i put mine to 0% when i dive and then decrease or increase but that might be what im doing wrong.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
Yeah you pull back on the stick. However much you need to pull through inverted and get to the 90° dive. You don't need to touch the trim if you don't want to...there is enough elevator authority for you to override it. As you get in the dive you can start using trim if you like.

Could you also do an inverted dive with the contact altimiter or is that wrong ? And also what should your manual trim be set to befire diving, straight and level ?
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
I don't think it matters which way you do it. You either roll inverted and pull down or nose over to the dive angle. For trim it's personal preference...but you'll be gaining some airspeed in the dive so if you wanted to make things a little easier you could to be nose heavy before diving. This way as you gain airspeed you're already trimmed for it which can make it easier to keep your nose pointed where you want it.

Do you have the propeller set to full fine when doing the dive? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the initial increase in drag will slow down the descent for better target acquisition and also allow a faster ascent when pulling back up at the much lower altitude.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
No I just have it set it to combat RPM as it's a constant speed prop, meaning I'm not controlling propeller pitch as you would for a variable pitch propeller (plenty of people refer to changing pitch when really they're adjusting RPM). If the pitch was full fine then that would increase RPM to maximum. I wouldn't set it to the highest RPM as that could lead to overspeeding the prop during the dive when the airplane starts gaining speed. If anything you could reduce RPM if you want to prevent it, but generally speaking you won't have a problem if you keep the RPM in normal range before you dive.
