Even though people talk about the whole Johnny Roseboro incident, Marichal was a great pitcher in the sixties (he wasn't a bad hitter either) Him, Gibson, an Koufax were phenomenal for that era!!

this was the heart of national league domination in the all star game, mostly because the american league integrated slower. willie mays, hank aaron, juan marichal, bob gibson, ernie banks, maury wills, orlando cepeda, frank robinson, willie mccovey, ferguson jenkins, etc. all hall of famers in the national league in those days.
Asi cualquiero, no? Por favor Hipolito...
I remember watching an old HBO baseball documentary around...1990 maybe 1991. One of the hitters stated Marichal had something like 14 pitches...he would come at you from 4 different arm angles. The guy was a true craftsman on the mound
The mound was 6 inches higher than today and the ballparks were ridiculously huge. 1968 saw the lowest batting avg for the league in a generation. Pedro Martinez 2000 is truly unbelievable as his ERA gap to league average was largest in history.
i might be impartial but this was the prime of mlb. the raised mound and pitchers dominating, more strategy, players from every walk of life, closer games, not walking people, batters not striking out with runners in scoring position, moving people, sacrificing, etc. back when hitting .300 really meant something. none of this one pitcher for one batter crap, the endless strike outs and lack of playing the game the way it was meant to be played.
Don't forget Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA and 17 strikeouts in the World Series 68? He also was a dominant pitcher the rest of the decade as his stats prove. Notice how the pitching has changed from Gibson, Marichal, Koufax and many of this time as they all "wind up" and land several feet away from the pitching rubber. Regie Jackson said that made it much harder as a batter to pick up the ball and how it was spinning.
Juan Marcial was one of the All Time Great Pitchers. Though Koufax was having great years , Juan should have won at least 1 Cy Young Award, The Press was a little tougher on Juan than they should have been.
lowpants94 Ofcourse the press was tough on Marichal, the press was racist then and is still racist now. But thanks God that Juan Marichal is in the hall of fame right now,at least they did him justice there. 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴
Too bad he had a penicillin reaction in japan- almost dying- and developed back issues that shortened his career. He was the BEST right-handed pitcher over the 60's and 2nd best pitcher ( behind Koufax). I loved watching him pitch. Check out his stats in the 7 all star games he pitched. Unbelievable
lowpants94 they were racist against dominican players then. And the sport writers are still a little racist against latino baseball players these days as well.
pretty ironic how Sandy Koufax is praising Juan Marichal when only 3 years earlier, Juan tried to play Home Run Derby with Sandy's noggin in the infamous Marichal/Roseboro fight
The Giants & Dodgers Battled for the winning pennant. The Catcher asked koufax throw to the head, and Marichal heard it and told him don't do it, Koufax Refused to do it . And Roseboro did it . Even returned the ball to Koufax, touching his ear ,, Marichal Lost control of his temper .and hit Roseboro with the bat .That's the only way to get Marichal out of the game and the Dodgers won the NL Championship . I Think both learned Roseboro learned after that .Do Not Do that to a Dominican. And Marichal learned why the Giants did not win the pennant, and his entry to the HOF Was delayed.
