This is the most Wakefield game ever. It was the pivotal moment in the 2004 comeback, and practically nobody remembers it. We remember him wearing it in Game 3 to save the bullpen. We remember him losing it in 2003 when he could've easily been the ALCS MVP, but do we remember the three shutout innings in Game 5 of 2004? Not really. RIP Wake. You walwys did what had to be done

I will never forget those harrowing moments when his knuckle ball was moving like a butterfly and Varitek could barely keep it in front of him with the runner on 3rd. Most tense moments ever in sports.

@jamespenny9482
@jamespenny9482 2 года назад
Yes!!! I remember that very well. My wife, who had been watching the whole game, couldn't take it anymore and went upstairs to bed. Every pitch was pins and needles. Wakefield's knuckler was moving like crazy and Varitek, who didn't normally catch for Wakefield, couldn't handle the crazy movement, which resulted in the Yankees getting a runner to 3rd base, but neither could the Yankees hit it! Yeah, with the Red Sox facing elimination, that was easily the most tense inning ever.

This is the only Red Sox playoff game I’ve ever attended. Every batter felt like life or death, especially in extra innings. When they won, it felt euphoric. Strangers were high-fiving and hugging. When we left Fenway, riot police were lined up in order to keep the peace, and the mood of the crowd changed.

@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 7 месяцев назад
Yep he did the same thing in game 2 (Olerud HR), Francona made the same mistake as Grady in leaving Pedro in past 100 pitches, where later in his career he would lose effectiveness like clockwork. Martinez would have left with the lead or tied in both game 2 and 5 if Francona had pulled him at the 100 pitch mark. Francona got away with it because of his late-inning moves with Roberts and Mientkeiwicz that enabled the comebacks in games 4 and 5. Also his use of Foulke, who was an absolute warhorse, worked out perfectly

Yeah, that lineup was sick! Jeter, A-Rod, Sheffield, Matsui, Bernie, Posada... Red Sox pitching was nails, plus they had a little luck on their side.

Wasn’t this game and 2004 NLCS game 5 played on the same channel? although MLB Classics uploaded this game on a different channel. I couldn’t find the whole game coverage of 2004 NLCS Game 5 anywhere but I did manage to see the Jeff Kent home run clip.

TrueRGM I’m not sure if it’s because MLB Classics and fans hated hearing Joe buck broadcasting on FOX and it’s mostly hard for Joe buck haters to watch their games with him broadcasting. In my opinion I just don’t care what he broadcast when I watch my favorite sports teams play or postseason games.

That specific broadcast you're referring to is MLB International. In the St Louis and Houston area, that NLCS game was on FOX. For the rest of the country it was on FX. When FOX had both the NLCS and ALCS from 2001-2006 they would do this if they overlapped. 2007 was when FOX had an LCS and TBS had the other.

Yep. But in the St Louis and Houston markets, they switched over to the NLCS at First Pitch. The rest of the country got the entire ALCS

Pedro was toast at this point. Had they put a team like this one around him when the Sox signed him in '98, there would have been no late '90's Yankees dynasty.
