Clinton Heylin talks with Ian Clayton at the book launch for 'JUDAS!', his account of Bob Dylan's prolific and tumultuous mid-sixties period in the aftermath of 'turning electric'.
The launch was held in conjunction with Classic Album Thursdays. After the Q&A, Clinton introduces the original 'Royal Albert Hall' bootleg recording of the Bob Dylan and the Hawks gig at Free Trade Hall, Manchester in May 1966.
The event took place at Tap & Barrel, Pontefract, on the day that Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

I had that Manchester live bootleg in 1971. It is the greatest rock concert ever recorded.

The first Dylan bootleg -- "Great White Wonder" -- appeared in Spring/Summer, 1969, at about the same time that pre-release copies of "The Beatles"' "Get Back" ("later "Let it Be") are available.

Very cool! The lampshade is placed in an unfortunate spot behind Heylin, which make it seem as if he's wearing a frumpy hat.

The distinction between "hip" and non-"hip" was -- and continues to be -- a stupid snobbery. It's nothing more than another formulation of "us" and "them".

Heylin tries real hard and I like the detail but he gets a fair amount of facts wrong in his books. One is that Bruce Langhorn plays guitar on the original Don’t Think Twice (!). (Listen to the live “Tomorrow is a Long Time” and “Spanish Boots” Clinton. Same picking technique! In this video he misquotes “Mr Tambourine Man” - He says “I’m stranded (not branded) on my feet”. C’mon!! Heylin works too hard to get these simple things wrong.

And he should limit his analyses of audiences and "genres" to England. In the US, "authentic folk" was a genuine category to the "folk purists". Sure, they were snobs -- they accused Dylan of being a "thief" because he acted like actual folk musicians had: he borrowed and reused and rewrote -- and they rejected "commercial"/popular music. People like Heylin, including many fans, are so obsessed that they haven't lives of their own. They are seeking to pin down what makes Dylan tick -- an impossibility -- and tend to bend the history to their preconceptions and wishes and fantasies. And I,, for one, don't buy the motorcycle accident: at the end of that tour he was so overamped on amphetamine and weed that he's talking to himself -- look at him at the end of "No Direction Home" talking about dying in a plane crash. He realized that his manager was using him the way musicians before him were exploited, so he quits the tour to clean up. What better way to be able to trump his manager -- get off the touring treadmill -- than to publicly claim he broke his neck?

@@jnagarya519 You talking about "people seeking to pin Dylan down an impossibility" then you rattle off your own "professional opinion." Do you not see the irony and the hypocrisy? Yes, we all have out own Dylan... and I'm sure he likes it that way. The "left list politics" people refer to are simply about human rights and anti-racism- Dylan did not want to be confined, nor did he want to be a journalist. This is obvious. Otherwise, everybody's got theories- you got yours, I got mine. Nothing fails but a try, and Bob has tried many, many things. There's no success or failure, just... judgments.

As for the Newport "controversy": anyone in the folk "community" who was into Dylan followed his every move. "Like a Rolling Stone" was on the charts before Newport. So it was not that he "went electric" that was the controversy; it was more that Pete Seeger, the "most important" organizer of the Newport Folk Festival, was always left-wing politics, and pissed at Dylan for no longer writing protest songs. The political left pretty much assumed that it "owned" Dylan -- and Dylan wasn't going to be owned. On the Sunday of the so-called "controversy," he was the star of the evening, but was only given 15 minutes for his performance. Earlier in the day, the "Paul Butterfield Blues Band" -- which backs him that evening -- played an hour of electric music and no one was upset about it. In short, the stories around the "controversy" -- listen to Maria Muldaur in Scorcese's "No Direction Home" are truer than the story that is repeated ad nauseum.

Bob is not what you want him to be, ask him, I did. Funny guy. Take Care. PS. ( I met on the concourse at Glasgow SECC 1995, he was sitting reading the Evening Times before the show, I didn't realize at first who it was I was sitting next to, he said are you here for the gig then I said, GOD you are Bob Dylan, he said no I am not GOD, but I am who you think I am, enjoy the show. I was that shocked I forgot to ask for an autograph. That was five minutes in time I will never forget. ) Take care.
