Man, awesome video. You mentioned a bit about how the Halford solo project was good. But to me, one thing that clearly overshadows the Ripper era is just how incredibly good Halford's solo project was. "Silent Screams" is so, so much better, it makes a joke out of the Ripper era songs.
@@dynamo4543 Saw it. Forget it. I already have them all anyway. Live versions of songs we already own are hardly a strong selling point. I got screwed a couple of times over with Iron Maiden's "Senjutsu" box set and a couple of Black Sabbath "Super Deluxe" box sets.
Wow, really appreciate the depth you had in your analysis - a very different experience from the typical “That’s f*ing awesome” or “That f*ing sucks” with no explanation of why the reviewer feels the way they feel. Kudos!
No one could have done a better job than Ripper in that situation. It was a no-win situation for him since there would always be fans complaining that they missed Rob etc. His live performances were great and i'm actually a big fan of Jugulator!
Nice video really well said. I personally love these albums and I think they are the heaviest priest has to offer. Glenn and KK's guitar work blows me away
very good album and with time is getting better! specially now when JP is diminished and sounds so poor… Bless KK and Tim we still have classic JP power 💪 with KK Priest
A little rough on this album, though. It was actually very good. Let's face it, everyone thought Priest was done. I was of the same opinion when Iron Maiden released "The X Factor".
@@bramirez3330 Yes. I find Metal fans like to live in the past, and are slower to accept change over any other music genres. Look at AC/DC. Brian Johnson has been their front man for 41 years, longer than Bon Scott was even alive, and some people still call him the "new guy". That's fkd up!
I was 14 when juggulator came out and I was still discovering metal. It was my first Priest album and I loved every second of it. I only knew priest for singing breaking the law, when I heard bullet train I was hooked. I like the Halford Era priest better than the ripper Era now but juggulator was extremely important to me I followed Tim Owens career since. The man is legendary in his own right. But even as a fan I can't speak kindly on demolition.
@@ScoopedMids I even like the last 3 tracks. Night comes down fucking rules. If you take suggestions, do a series of shitty songs by good bands. Like mother- the police or my world- guns n roses.
Yeah, I like those songs too. I don't know what people like Razorfist is thinking saying those songs suck. As for your idea, its not bad at all, though maybe not a series, maybe like a one off list video. Also, I like mother lol.
@@ScoopedMids WElL tHe TElePhoNE iS rinGInG Is ThAT mY mOTher On tHE phoNe. Also, I like razorfists content (aside from the bootlicking) but his opinions are somehow, objectively wrong.
I used to adore his videos. But, ever since the 2016 election he focused so much on politics that it degraded even his non political videos. And after I saw Kyle Kulinski destroy him in a debate, I realised that just because he used big words, that doesn't mean he's smart.
Great vid! I feel like you being fair with your retrospective pointing out the good and the bad! I've actually want to hear your takes on some other Judas Priest records as well!
Hey, I like Bullet Train! Nice analysis overall though. And oh yeah, Cathedral Spires is the shit. Too bad they never did it live. Interesting side note about that song is that Ian Hill's bass lines are REALLY good. Cheers!
Jugularor is my favorite Judas Priest album. I love it from start to finish despite the cheesy nature of some of the lyrics. I understand that most people don't like this album for a bunch of different reasons and that's fine. but to me Jugulator is the best album that Judas Priest ever released and Ripper Owens is the best singer Judas Priest ever had.
They ooze with 80s cheese in a good way to me though

I love Tim's voice. I meet him in România and he is very nice with his fans. Took photo's with all the people after the show. I spoke with him about the Rockstar movie. Down to earth guy. Hope to see him soon with K.K's Priest. 🤘🏻🤠🚬
Wow this gives me flashbacks of John Bush vs Joey B for better Anthrax vocalist. I was 15 when Sound of White Noise came out and everyone was like damn where did this come from? Awesome. Anthrax navigated the metal/grunge changeover probably the best. I’m a John Bush fan and it’s fkd up the band didn’t even tell him he was out and made deals behind his back to get Joey back. It’s like they considered him a hired gun/day player. And now Anthrax perform NOTHING from SOWN bc Joey doesn’t like it. Great video btw Ripper was in an impossible situation with all the legacy and greatness that came before which eventually crushed him like a tidal wave once the goodwill was gone. The Ripper era and the movie ‘Rockstar’ are intertwined for me.
I fucken love the build up in burn in hell how it starts off slow then starts slowly building up and getting faster and more aggressive that song should have been the opening track to jugulator
At the time of Jugulators release. I was a Judas Priest super crazy fan And was also getting into heavier music at the time? So I absolutely loved the album! I still remember buying the album and driving home from the city. and blearing the album in the car on the way home... So loud I had bikies ask me what band that was. When I said, Judas Priest, they were like fuck that's JP???? Holy shit that's heavy cool... I also really loved Demolition, Lost and found was my fav track from the album, and got to see them on tour with Ripper on the Demolition tour in Australia and it was sold out and a great night!. I totally disagree with your review of this album... You're way more articulate than me. I'll just sound retarded trying to get my view across on why it's great, but just my opinion. But great video 1st-time viewer, The latest Priest album is a masterpiece IMO
Great video!!! I like both Ripper albums with Judas Priest and I don't agree at all with your takes on these albums but hey, that's the point! This is what's great about music, it's all subjective. Cheers!
22:57 that's me in the middle!! lol I agree with Demolition. It is a shit album. But Jugulator I still like it to this day. One of my favourite album of Priest with Defender of the Faith, Screaming for Vengeance and British Steel. Killing Machine as well.
Sans lyrics, I've felt that Jugulator is one of their best albums, considering their change in singer and style. Definitely some corny parts, but that was to be expected. Honestly, for a band chasing a trend they weren't native to, I thought they did an amazing job. Blood Stained is a banger! I couldn't believe it was Priest when I heard it. And Cathedral Spires... that outro! Demolition, however, did NOTHING for me.
Good video, very informative. Ripper is good, but this was an off time for priest. The electronic stuff was nothing new, they did it in the 70s and the 80s. Rockstar is a weird movie. I call it a "fact based fiction" Its fun to watch for the soundtrack and performance parts\,,/
I saw Tim (Ripper) live in a very small venue when Demolition came out. It was ok, but it wasn't Priest.. it just wasn't. IT was a forced effort to put out an album using the Judas Priest name. That said, I do think that Halford and the band needed some time apart.(At least Halford did at the time). Rob did some fantastic work on his own. I think it helped him own his age and perfect pushing his limitations. The truth is, I saw Judas Priest back in 1982, 83 multiple times and again in the later 80s. They broke up 2 times that I remember. The "Fight" years, and the "Ripper" era. The greatest shit in my opinion came early in their careers, and when they reunited. "PAINKILLER" was epic and still is, and take any album they've done after the Ripper era. It's just unreal. That's not taking anything away from Ripper. K.K is doing shit on the side now with Ripper that kicks ass. The "K.K'S PRIEST" project is great. But with respect to Mr Owens, Rob is not replaceable. There's just too much history there for that.
The 90s was a difficult time for metal bands from the 80s. What had worked so well for them just wasn’t “cool” anymore so they had to change and “update” their sound to remain relevant. That experimentation led to some interesting, weird and sometimes terrible music.
Overall, I'm not and I never claimed to be. I like Tims's voice, and he was good live and on record for the most part. But, the songwriting let him down.
About Metal Messiah and stuff being Christian, it was an attempt to throwback to the painkiller days, the title track of that also sounds really Christian And I agree the chorus is nice and that’s one of the songs on the album I kinda like, it’s only better because that was actually stolen by a Japanese industrial metal band/project :/ I believe either Glenn or the producer put that on there That version of Rapid Fire also sucks but check out the Jugulator live album version, he NAILS that one. Somehow I like it more than the british steel version
I don’t want to alarm anyone but I really liked Demolition. I thought One on One, In Between, Feed on Me, Hell is Home, Close to You and even Lost and Found were good tracks. I honestly believe that had they were better than any of the Blaze Bailey era Iron Maiden songs. It seems like maiden went soft without Dickinson whereas Priest went super heavy and dark. I love Angel of Retribution and was happy to see Halford back in the band, but it does sound a bit like melodic rock after hearing Demolition.
I was smart enough to grab bootlegs of Priest with Ripper during the Jugulator tour 5 different concerts, 5 different cities with very good 35 mm camera work in stereo ( pre cellphone days ) in various small venues, up close and literally touching the band Absolutely Impossible to find in any collection these days Because it wasn't Halford on vocals, nobody bid on them Not to mention Glenn and KK at their absolute peak !!! Worth more today , Then any Metal videos 😎 You can Find $$$ Jugulator Kicks Major ASS *
Uh, a few contentions. One, Stained Class is the better JP album of all time. Lyrically and musicality style. And two, I believe if there is to be a MVP in Priest, it's shared equally by KK and Tipton. Just saying.
Jugulator is the heaviest I would probably want to listen to and I love it. It still sounds like Priest. Demolition on the other hand, apart from Machine Man, just doesn't sound anything like what I'd want Priest to sound like. Not a huge fan of it.
Demolition's songwriting suffers from lots of monotone songs. Many songs have the same riff centered around E, D, F. I suspect Halford, who can play guitar and is sole writer ofemany of his solo songs, had more influence over the music writing than most people realized. And even if he may not have written a Priest song by playing it on guitar, he could contribute by singing melodies that send it in one direction or contribute by choosing material & giving feedback about what the others played.
Lesson about these 2 albums, dont have GLen Tipton write all the lyrics, that artwork for jugulator should not have been zoomed in like that the original artwork with the fire & the sky wouldve been amazing
Jugulator 8/10, Demolition 6/10 (worst Priest album), Live in London 9/10. I saw them on both tours, better than every Priest tour thereafter! And man, the lyrics are lame, but who cares!
I hope you give this an honest read : I like metal, I listen to a lot of heavy bands, from old school thrash to brutal death metal…. And I like watching presentations like this one while I’m mowing lawn or something… but then I have to ask myself something about the people who make videos like this one “Does this guy ever get laid?” …the answer is , clearly….. no…,
I hope you give this an honest read I like comments,I read a lot of them, from short positive ones to long critical ones.... And I like reading comments like this one, while I am doing my laundry or something.... but then I have to ask myself something about the people who write comments like this one "Did he ever grow up?" ...the answer is , clearly.... no...,
Jugulator is an amazing metal album, people don't understand what they are talking about. Decapitate is the only song I did not like. The lyrics were much better than most of their other albums. Demolition is a very solid album as well.
I knew Tim from his cover bands in the late 80's, and even opened for one in 94 when I was fronting some bands here locally. So I really wanted to like those albums, but they just are not very good. That includes about anything he has ever sang on, save for that one Winter's Bane album. Btw, have you heard the new "KK's Priest?" Seems KK was just as capable as Glenn at writing cheesy lyrics! 😃
I agree with most of what you said, especially the creative lyrics in Brain Dead, but sorry, Bullet Train is one of the best songs the Priest has ever released. Ripper's screams are relentless, the badass main riff mixed with the speed metal solo rivals songs like the Sentinel and Painkiller, Ian Hill has some of his best humming bass grooves in this song, and Scott travis's chops and bass drums blow the shit out of the 80s thrash metal drummers in bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. You know for a fact that Metallica won the Grammy award based on name recognition, so your argument against Bullet Train just seems invalid to me, but good analysis on everything else. Demolition was pretty mediocre, sadly...
Jugulator crushed on all levels and was the last great/really good Priest album, everything that came after (including Demolition) was lukewarm at best. Angel of Retribution is still to this day one of the biggest disappointments in my life as far as music albums go, right up there with Dissection's Reinkaos and The Greater Wrong of the Right by Skinny Puppy. If I want to hear anything Halford-related post Painkiller, I'll go for the first Fight album or Resurrection.
I don't say that il like the lirics, but i reality like jugulator, i don't Think its one of the best albums by judas pirest but still i Think its a great album
Awesome voice, some good and some weak material but god-awful stage presence. He just couldn't hold a candle to the atmosphere that Rob created on stage.
