After nearly 60 years on TV, stage and in films, Emmy- and Tony-winning actor Judd Hirsch has perfected the art of turning the Everyman into someone extraordinary. The kid from New York who starred in "Taxi" has now, at 87, earned his second Oscar nomination, for Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." Hirsch talks with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz about bringing his own past, and a childlike fascination, to the role.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

*Judd is 87 years of age but doesn’t look a day over 60. Blessed.*

He looks quite healthy but "not a day over 60" is ridiculously hyperbolic. He looks maybe 75.

Sometime in the 1980s, when I was working for Columbia Pictures, Mr. Hirsch was invited to one of our premiere red carpet events - complete with hoards of fans, camera and tv news people and lots of glitz. He didn't have his series any longer and hadn't been in anything notable for a while. It think it may have been the Tootsie premiere - can't remember. Anyway, the media folks had been going crazy for one celebrity after another. However, when the Mr. Hirsch arrived, to the press it was like he was invisible. He looked at them looking at other celebrities, smiled to himself and walked into the screening like the gentleman I believe him to be.

Great story. it fits who I think Judd Hirsch is to the core. NOT flash and glitter but heart and soul.

You can tell that man has never "worked" a day in his life, he looks 25 years younger than he is. Boy, I enjoy seeing people who've lived a life they were meant to live. Too many people, myself included, trudge through life embracing the moments we have instead of living a life that's a constant "moment". Good for him!

I've worked hard, more so I have been left with nothing but my humble ethics. I have always smiled and encouraged others, giving my last dollar saying I had ten more in my pocket. Still working hard because I fid it hard to find good work. I am old, still climbing on roof, still helping neighbors who have no idea, still building in the hot TX sun. I may not look old, but I do in my eyes, and misinterpreted by many as comfortable. But there is no one in my community that can hang with me, even if just my 3 mile lawn tracked mowing every week. Not sure about him, but don't project, and I live comfortably now.

@gheller2261 Год назад
Recently rewatched it. Not a great film, just decent, but you could see River Phoenix's star quality. What a waste. As for Hirsch's character, I had not previously realized how selfish he is, which is the irony given that the character was supposed to care so much about the world. Christine Lahti was the standout in that film.

This was an amazing profile. I'm such a super fan - loved his work as Alex on Taxi and in Ordinary People. He's great in both drama and comedy, which isn't easy. People made a big deal about Latka on Taxi - and it was a fun character and Andy Kaufman was special - but Alex was the deeper, more realistic character. He's right; you have to follow your heart in life.

Hirsch also starred in the short-lived TV cop show "Delvecchio" in the 70s pre-Taxi fame, co-starring Hill Street Blues anchors Michael Conrad & Charles Haid. Others from this CBS series who made the jump to "Blues" were George Wyner, James B. Sikking & writer/co-creator Steven Bochco.

I have admired MR. JUDD HIRSCH since 1984 when he played Detective Al Manetti in the movie WITHOUT A TRACE. I still love this movie and his performance in it. I was elated when he was nominated for a supporting actor OSCAR in THE FABELMANS, and I have high hopes that he will win. He is a living legend and so deserving of this accolade. My finger's are crossed. Amazing that he look's 👀 so youthful for his age. 😲 👏 👏 👏 👏 ❤ 👏👏 👏 👏 🌟

Had not known that he had studied engineering. Good for him. What sort of engineering? The sciences and engineering mindsets might help a person to filter out the humdrum BS --- which often makes you socially unpopular --- that's life. Liked his various performances. Liked him a lot in 'Numb3rs.' Caught on in that first episode that the show was going to be about Set Theory. That was my favorite topic during my undergrad in Mathematics. Them were the days.

He understands the secret to acting. Don't act. Just BE the character you're portraying. Find the thing that breathes life into that character, whomever that is and then you're there. This is how excellence is achieved in acting. There are only a handful of actors in the business who can bring this to their work. Judd was robbed of the Oscar for his role in Ordinary People. I hope he isn't this time for The Fableman's.

I am really hoping he wins the Oscar for Fabelmans. I like Key Huy Quan though but Key has a lot of years to be be nominated. Judd has been working hard in many projects and even won 2 Tonys and 2 Emmys. if wins the Oscar.. He would be 25th Triple Crown of Acting winner that should have been Glenn Close shot in 2018 for the Wife also the 10th actor.. He would also be he Oldest competitive Oscar winner in the Acting category.. wow!

He and David Lynch had brief cameos but turned in the films best performances . Michelle Williams was wildly miscast and ironically, poorly directed; Paul Dano gave a one note performance; and Jeannie Berlin was also under-utilized. Spielberg spent way too much time with “Uncle Benny” and the anti-Semitic bully, when Judd Hirsch, David Lynch and Jeannie Berlin played the most interesting characters and gave the films best performances. To me, The Fablemans was a huge disappointment . Not bad, but it could have been so much better.
