Steven Spielberg on "The Fabelmans": A happy beginning 

Leslie keeps baiting him to be bitter and he refuses. Such a class act.

Breaks my heart. I understand now why he said in an earlier interview that he wanted to do everything to make his marriage work with Kate Capshaw and children that’s so touching. Why does love have to be so beautiful and yet so painful though? Thank you Steven Spielberg for sharing your life with us both in dreams and reality. Peace and happiness for you and your family.

Thank you for this interview. Very honest and open and sharp. I didn't know all this. Poor Steven as a kid to have to carry this secret. He was/is and will always be my most favorite director. More than once did movies of him rescued me from very hard times in my life. I know this isn't him I'm speaking to, but still, I want to thank him for that. Because of this, he has been in my heart for at least 40 years now. I'm looking forward to this movie, from what I've seen sofar, it can only be good, it looks beautiful. But we have to wait here in the Netherlands for almost 3 months longer. Nit used to that anymore....

Ah, life is never simple. At a certain point in our lives we finally realize that the people around us, even the people we love, have dimensions to them that we never imagined. If we are among the lucky ones we not only survive but we grow stronger in the process of understanding the whys of those discoveries.

Leslie should not interject her opinions or assumptions of his feelings or thoughts. It his life and his perspective and opinions not hers that should be allowed to unfold without opinionated prompting.

It may be short but the clip showing him guiding the young actor shows Mr. Spielberg's special way of dealing with children. Not everyone can speak with youngsters.

Family shame is so toxic. He’s breaking the cycle of toxicity by shedding a light on the secret. Very brave.

I’m 29 and I’m lucky to have had a mom and dad under the same roof to this day. West Side Story last year proved Steven can still make a good movie at his age. I remember reading a book about him in middle school. I’m hyped to see the Fabelmans

I'm excited! I read some of his life story from interviews. Ironically, after my parents divorced, I remember Jurassic Park was a movie that I loved and I got a JP T-rex for Christmas from them. We were in Mexico, so $14.99 for the T-rex was expensive for us. Even when divorced, they got the T-rex 🦖 for me. I really played with that toy and placed it back in it's box when done. I grew up on Stephen's movies, long before the internet, long before most homes even had a microwave!.... so blessed to have been a child of the 70's and experience life that would be considered boring to most of today's youth, but they have no idea just how fun to was back then for us!... 💯💯💯

Sometimes we have to become parents ourselves, in order to understand and forgive OUR parents. For their PERCEIVED slights or "failures". In many cases, they did the best they could with what they had! It's so true, what he says: "Sometimes you have to grow up in order to look back and see the past"....for what it really was!

I love his movies! He is so talented!

It was such a beautiful movie. I don't know how else to describe it. I felt transported back in time and almost trespassing into someone's personal life and space. An onlooker. I came back to re-watch this interview with his parents. It still pulls my heart when his dad said that he was still in love with her and she just replied that she was so unhappy. The look on his face after she said that. Sometimes you can love someone so much and only receive breadcrumbs in return but it's not your job to make another person happy.

Very similar to my story, and it was twelve years for me not talking to him. I love them both, and if it wasn't for movies, the imagination, the stories, I don't know how I would have coped. You've made some great and wonderful movies, Steven Spielberg.

Fortunately, we still have Spielberg to continue watching his movies and regarding The Fabelmans, I really liked it because he wanted to seek portraying his self-biography through this movie. It reminded me of what Scorsese did it when he made The Irishman, wanting to make a personal movie.

Steven Spielberg claimed that although he and Tony Kushner had discussed the idea of the movie for years, it was during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 that he decided to write the screenplay with Kushner from scratch while his schedule was clear. The two of them wrote the script from their homes during lockdown and finished it in 2 months. Steven Spielberg's first screenplay credit since A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The film's development goes back to 1999, when Steven Spielberg considered directing a film about his childhood for some time, with its initial incarnation being titled "I'll Be Home." It would have been directed from a screenplay written by his sister Anne Spielberg (who inspired the character of Reggie Fabelman in this film). In March 2022, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski provided more information on the film's plot. He revealed that the film will chronicle Spielberg's life from age seven to eighteen and deal with "his family, with his parents, conundrums with his sisters, but primarily deals with his passion for movie-making," while adding that it will touch on the themes of "young love, parental divorce, and early formative relationships ... It's a very beautiful, beautiful personal movie. It's very revealing about Steven's life and who he is as a filmmaker." This is the fourth collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner, and the first screenplay they've written together. Tony Kushner had previously written Munich, Lincoln, and West Side Story, which were all directed by Steven Spielberg. It was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film's title is presumed to be the family's surname that the story is based around. First film from Steven Spielberg to be distributed by Universal Pictures since Munich. The work on the screenplay for The Fabelmans began in October 2020 during the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tony Kushner reflected on the experience, saying, "We wrote three days a week, four hours a day, and we finished the script in two months: by leagues the fastest I've finished anything. It was a blast. I loved it." Spielberg, at that time, felt that the climate caused by the pandemic convinced him that the time was now right to make the film, saying, "I started seriously thinking, if I had to make one movie I haven't made yet, something that I really want to do on a very personally atomic level, what would that be? And there was only one story I really wanted to tell ... My life with my mom and dad taught me a lesson, which I hope this film in a small way imparts ... Which is, when does a young person in a family start to see his parents as human beings? In my case, because of what happened between the ages of 7 and 18, I started to appreciate my mom and dad not as parents but as real people." He gave drafts of the script to his sisters, Sue and Nancy, to ensure that their memories be included in the story and that the details in the film were portrayed as accurately as possible. On the meaning behind the family name "Fabelman", Kushner (who came up with that name) said, "Spielberg means play-mountain; 'spieler' is an actor in Yiddish, and a 'spiel' can be speech or can be a play ... I wanted to have some of that meaning, and I’ve always liked the German word 'fabel,' which means fable. And because the movie is autobiographical for Steven but it isn’t an autobiography, it’s not a documentary, so there’s a fictional element as well. So I thought that ‘Fabelman’ was a nod to that." It was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spielberg is not only the creator of his movies, his mind make more than that being the writer and (mostly) producer of classics like Poltergeist, Young Sherlock Holmes, Gremlins, The Goonies, Super 8, Memoirs of a Geisha, etc. He not only is an amazing director, he put money to another filmakers projects that now are classics or very memorable movies. He is a men who loves Filmaking, and you can see that in all the projects he has he's name in. And let be honest, a lot of the movies we love, have Spielberg like Writer or Producer (or both). I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and the "Young" movie was one of my favorites, imagine my face years later when i see the "Steven Spielberg" name in the credits, then i undestrand why the style of the movie where so familiar, has the Spielberg soul all over the place! Sorry for my english, i'm from Argentina so is not perfect.

Just finished watching the fabelmans and it’s another masterpiece. I don’t really love Spielbergs movies but I do recognise them as masterpieces either way. He always manages to tell his stories for the broadest audience without ever stepping into something weird or off, it’s always just right. I think the current days we live in suit him even better than before it’s crazy, and at 75… God’s will all along

'The Greatest Show On Earth' scared me spitless. The elephant scene was horrifying. Lyle Bettger scared me more than the awful thing in 'House of Wax'. What can I say? I'm old.

this movie reminds me of my beginning of learning my passion...photography. I did not enroll in "yearbook" in high school...but began in community college and learned photography and super 8 film production. From there, a good friend from college, hooked me up with his publisher and 1 roll of Tri-x and going to a drag race in the community racepark.....30+ yrs and still going!

At first glance I thought Leslie was interviewing Tom Hanks. Steven looks just like Tom during this interview.

Absolutely love the interview. I absolutely love Spielberg. But I am totally impressed that Leslie Stahl has not had a face lift and she looks her age and isn't ashamed to show it Bravo! At 74 I want to look like I'm 64 because I work as an accountant; if I look 74 employers would think I was a doding imbecile incapable of the job. Thank God NOT my current employer! My current employer recognizes that experience goes with age. I'm not sure how old Leslie is but she looks fantastic. Bravo you go Girl!

We are all human……..wow! Spielberg and family

Guilt, like all emotions, is there for a reason. To purge oneself of guilt is to become less human.

So this is Spielberg's Roma. I've been waiting for this for so long.

Steven knew his mum was in love with his dad's best friend at 16, but blamed his dad for the divorce 3 years later and did not speak to him for 15 years, a very complex situation.

When all is said & done, he might just be the greatest...

I understand the love that his family has for each other. We carry things that was think others cant bare. I never told my mother that I was molested many times. As she was a single parent I did not want to make her aware of that. Maybe she did know ? And that is ok. I am at peace with many things and proud of who I am and my mother. Just like I am sure he is.

I like Steven Spielberg, and he’s told some great stories on film, but it sounds like this film will forgo depth in favor or a more childlike interpretation of his story.

I went on a trip to LA when I was 21, over forty years ago. We ate at the Milky Way and were very impressed and grateful that it was a Kosher restaurant, considering that Mrs. Spielberg wasn't observant. Although admittedly I know nothing about her second husband.

Very much interested in seeing this, but I feel so bad for him regarding his mother. So many red flags about her have been said in only 9 mins.

Now there needs to be a story about Martin Scorsese directed by Martin Scorsese.

Masterpiece movie

You feel this story in your soul, it’s absolutely mesmerizing. Don’t know if it’s a “masterpiece” but it’s one his best films definitely

Just goes to show that success and money can't help diminish emotional pain--I am pretty sure this pain supplemented his artistry.

So, he blamed his father for divorcing his mother, even though he knew she cheated on him? Is it just me, or did it seem like The Fabelmans tried to excuse and rationalize his mothers behavior? “Guilt is a wasted emotion”. Or perhaps it’s an emotion that tells you that you’ve done something wrong. Cheating is wrong and there’s almost never an excuse for it. Cheating on a man, especially one that damn near worshipped you and provided a good life for you, is horrible. Not trying to be hostile here. Simply trying to open a civil discussion because that’s something that really bothered me about the film. The fact that it (to me) felt like Spielberg was trying to excuse and rationalize his mother’s horrible behavior.

This seems self-indulgent, but I'm still gonna watch.

This is without a doubt the most self-indulgent film ever made. So cringe.

I don't think it's a stretch to say it could be argued that if Spielberg didn't initially view the divorce as he did (what exactly his father's role was), then CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND doesn't happen. Or at least, not nearly in the way the movie ultimately exists. It's all right there in the strife if Richard Dreyfus' family
