I think this is one of my favourite cases so far - just the sheer madness of it all!

The wife said they had a hit list with more people on it, and that killing the prosecutors made them feel happy. A Texas newspaper reported that ultimately, he threw his wife under the bus and said she pulled the trigger in all the killings.

I thought they weren't normally overly hard on people they prosecuted, though? Like, wasn't it obvious that they had personal issues with Eric, based on how unwilling they were to treat him just like anyone else?

Sounds like a case of " good riddance to bad rubbish" to me

In the end Eric won the feud against the two. Shows you how DA's have way too much power yet they decide who goes to prison who doesn't.

@@erdelegy I'm not sure how that works. My Dad was a public defender, and he was offered to be a municipal judge if he could come up with a considerable amount of money. He couldn't, so he remained a public defender.

@@karennash2085 how they end up there is a simple and intuitive social mechanic we don’t talk about often enough and so I don’t think we guard against it like we should. A high functioning person with dark triad personality traits will seek a profession that allows them to indulge their impulses. It’s the same cause and effect relationship that drives an empathetic and caring individual to pursue a career in nursing, someone who has a fondness for children to go into childcare, or the kid who likes to dismantle gadgets to eventually become an engineer. A socially integrated psychopath or sociopath will often chart a socially acceptable path to satisfy their need for dominance and power play by gaining arbitrary authority through their profession. This is why we end up with more than a few bad cops imo. This is why you see police work and military service among the top desired professions of serial killers. In some instances they become politicians and CEOs because they lack inhibitions, will do whatever is necessary to obtain the status they desire, and have unbridled ambition.

I don't understand why he was prosecuted by his own colleagues. His case should have been given to an impartial judge and all this story would not have happened.

Yes, it was arrogance. I think he wanted to send a message that he could do whatever he wanted. He took pleasure in strutting due to his oversized ego.

The fact that the police didn't take Michael's concerns seriously--when police officers usually are known for looking out for DAs--was extremely telling. And while Eric certainly was wrong and should be in prison for how he handled the situation, documentaries painting Michael to be some innocent victim like Cynthia is misleading.

Prosecutors are, anyway. It's a job that's nothing but finding fault in others, and plenty of people with naïve ideas about crime and punishment see them as "the good guys" in the court room there to throw the book at "the bad guys" and lock them up.

Mike McClelland was a clinical psychologist for many years before pursuing a legal carer (as stated in his obituary which can be found online). Apparently he did not get much self insight out of it .

These two guys Mike and Mark were stupid for more or less egging this guy on and underestimating what he was capable of. However Mike's wife did not deserve to die in this. Eric killed her and Mike put her in danger.

Eric showed up wearing police clothes, he bought a lookalike police car. Mike 's wife looked and thought it was the police because the police came to their house all time. Eric shot her. Mike ran to reach his gun but no time.

@@davidhoward4715 I'm about as liberal as it gets however I have experienced something like this with people in powerful positions and after having exhausted every possible remedy without true legal relief you can bet your ass I began to plot to seek my own justice as the courts would not. This breach of the public trust by the people who swore to uphold the law is unbelievably common in small towns across America. Fortunately the individual who had initially used his position to, (let's just be honest) torture me died of a heart attack and the other party who was a judge got caught interfering in a custody battle and was removed from the bench and skipped town to avoid the shame and I couldn't find him. But believe me I so raw about it I really didn't care if I got caught or not. I actually had convinced myself that I would be saving others from a similar disparity and whatever the punishment it would be justified. When you feel powerless and have suffered great injury even the most liberal of people can convince themselves to do unto others as they have done to you . If you've never felt that need for extra legal revenge then you probably have never been hurt by people of power and should count yourself very lucky indeed.

I think there is more to the story too. There must be a reason why the DA was upset that Eric supported his opponent in the election. He certainly could not expect everyone to support him so why was he particularly upset that Eric supported his opponent.? I certainly do not think that eliminating someone who is trying to destroy your life because you supported his opponent in an election is a narcissistic reaction. I think it's normal acceptable reaction. It would be cowardice to do otherwise.

My guess is that all three were narcissists: the DA, Asst. DA, and Eric. My beliefs follow. The DA had a vendetta against Eric and the Asst. DA knew it and was happy to go after Eric as hard as the DA wished (like a pitbull going after someone on behalf of its master). The Asst. DA is no angel. They both pursued Eric, going after his livelihood, reputation, and everything else that gave Eric any sense of worth to the public...essentially maliciously destroying his persona. Eric snapped at feeling targeted and exacted his murderous revenge.

He probably thought it was not a big deal since he worked there and a judge. The monitors probably laying around not in used. Pepple probably borrow or take stuff home all time.Have you seen the video he walked out with the monitors? He looked normal like he s not stealing anything. They hated him so they went after him for stealing. He was planning more killing after Mike but he got caught. His wife testified he had 3 more on his list, a judge and 2 more lawyers. They didnt know it was him until his friend called the police that Eric asked him to rent a warehouse for him. His friend didn't know anything.

People make accusations that ruin a person's life on little or NO PROOF or twist innocent behavior into a law breaking offense. Its easy to do. People at work do things without thought at times that can be twisted . These accusers usually get off Scott free. That is so bad and life altering . Some cant get over these injustices.

I live in a small rural town where everyone knows & most likely are related to each other. It's hard to find an attorney, judge, jury who doesn't know each other.

How? Even the people know you if you done wrong you still have to pay . That s why we have law to follow.

We live in a society, especially in a state like Texas, where too many people believe a gun will solve their problems. That's a big part of this tragedy. Also, Eric got his jollies out of shooting cats. That's a big red flag.

Right. Other documentaries I've seen about Eric painted Michael and Mark as innocent victims that Eric just targeted for no reason. Mark is questionable (at best), but Michael was not innocent in any capacity.

The odd thing is that many cases are more devastating than this, but there is something about 2 people with the wrong, (for lack of a better word) psychological makeup, could take it to this level when forced to work in the same setting that made me feel like a tragic ending was inevitable.
