@@discontentAK I have a coach I'm affiliated with for belts but in terms of a day to day coach I haven't had one since late blue belt. Opened my gym at blue belt and have basically been my own instructor ever since 🙂
@meowmix_tube thank you! It's something I really like to stress in the podcast as well. A lot of people are suffering from mental health issues and there's no need to ever hide or be embarrassed by it 🙂
I'm one of the bigger guys in my gym at 230lb. My favorite guy to learn from is a dude who's literally 1/2 my size at 115lb. I don't drop my weight on him, but I ask to put him in positions the biggest guys get me in and ask him to show me how he'd get out. This little dude is a MF ninja and is always at a size disadvantage. I take what he teaches me into the matches with the Ultras. This dude is my master Yoda.
hahaha it reminds me a lot of my friend who is a purple belt 4 stripes who is like 60kg (around 130lb) and im around 94kg ( around 210lb) and im a sambo guy and 3 stripe white belt and i pretty much never use strengt i only use technique and he helps me out a lot because he is extremely techincal since he is pretty much the smallest guy in the gym
Thanks gang... This dude is so great, when he takes your back, trying to peel him off is like trying to scratch an itch you can't reach. It's the best kind of frustration... I'm terrified of the day he perfects his submission game!
George stopped at our gym in Orlando and he was incredible and awesome to watch. We kept emptying one mat for his standup with our other judokas and it was just a great to see them talk about the levels of skill he had especially considering they were all black or brown belts.
I’m 185lbs, and 3 of my favorite training partners are 225lbs, 260lbs, snd 290lbs. For me, the Omaplata is my favorite and most effective attack. Big guys have a fear of rolling out of the sub and taking bottom position. They usually also have inflexible shoulders.
Pretty much exactly the same post I was going to make. My gym has lots of super heavy weights and I omoplata all of them, they don't tend to be very fast at rolling out of it like the smaller guys so I can always catch their hips before they roll and as No Floor Nerds EndOfLine said, they tend to have inflexible shoulders.
I'm down to about 285, and my shoulders are very flexible. I don't get omaplata used on me that often. I once had a purple belt try it against me in no-gi and I just flipped him around. He's landed it against me once afterwards but it took him forever. I'm still a white belt, btw. The most effective (annoying) attacks I get from smaller guys (everyone in my gym weighs less than I do) have to do with taking my back and choking me. Guys closer to my size can't do it so easily. I always look at stuff like tempo. A smaller guy has more speed and usually can gas out a larger guy. So as the larger guy, my whole game is to slow the other guy down and use my strength and size. I'm giving up speed to pretty much everyone, and even if I can be explosive, I can't sustain that like someone smaller might. So I have a pretty good base and try to make him do the work. I can move myself but it's easier to move the other guy. I always try to get pressure from top if I can, or sweep to get to top if I'm on bottom if I can, unless the other guy is close to my size. It's very hard to submit from the bottom against someone a lot smaller.
It's very hard! I wish I had access to some judo classes or a judo instructor. Not many options where I'm at. Judo is probably the area of my game that is least refined.
I'm 5' 11" 175lbs. I try to mount big guys and let them bench press me while trying to make myself like a water bed not a statue. When they tire I go for Ezekiel.
I am about 115lb and my favorite is to roll with guys at least 50lbs more. Also, a balloon sweep works very well on someone else of larger size, I used it yesterday! Feels great to finally have some new skills up my gi lol!
I roll with a 6"7 250 guy im 180 6" and I regularly take his back thanks to your underhook from closed guard approach. From there I make his life difficult until I see a submission. Thank you these videos
I would love a video on dealing with Stronger explosive guys. There’s this guy who pops into my gym, he’s not even a big guy, he’s maybe 5’8, 180, but he’s solid muscle. Specifically upper body. Big arms, chest, back. He is on steroids and he lifts weights all the time. He’s also very explosive. When he rolls with guys, he just uses muscle to get position. When he taps guys he isn’t even choking them with a deep, proper submission that’s sinked in, he just grabs there head in a headlock, or a guillotine, and he squeezed using all his muscle. I’ve even seen him escape mount by just exploding up. And I like to think of myself as a slow, pressure style, I like side control and mount, and I try using slow movements with tight control in order to stop people from escaping. But with this guy, I can start mount, and he will explode out every time. I try to avoid him because he explodes on subs and ultimately I’d rather train smart over a guy grabbing a straight ankle and ripping full force. How do you deal with big strong juice heads who just out muscle your every movement?
I love this video…first you’re so respectful to the other fighter in words and on the mats and secondly you share so much useful knowledge! I know these videos take time and effort so thank you for doing it.
I don’t enjoy rolls with the big guys. They will withhold their strength until they get compromised, and then violently explode out of it without proper technique, occasionally increasing risk for injuries to both of us
Ok, on big guys. If I have mount, I ratchet up an arm to threaten arm triangle. But they can power out so I focus my neck more toward their elbow, for control. Then Ezekiel or back take. Strong guys will hurt their shoulder before they’ll let you choke them. Gotta go around.
Thanks man! I couldnt live with myself if i took the easy way out haha. It was fun for me to start standing with him. Next year I'll do a full judo round with him and look forward to getting thrown around haha.
Best moves for big guys is a question I want an answer to as well. I’m about 175lbs and I’m competing in the absolute division in a couple weeks. I’m really lanky, so I like chaining arm bars from triangles. Hammer locks are gold in general. You don’t need a lot of movement to generate tons of force, and from the spiral ride, you’re using your entire body to pop the arm out.
Over the last decade I can't think of too many things that I have problems with...but over the last 2 years...there's been 1 black belt that has seem to always get me on my side with my back to him...he's been able to attack that arm...fairly simple...everyone else doesn't even come close..but he keeps nailing it. My strength is of very little use against him. ....and I am still in the 1100-1200 lb 3 collective lift area....squat, bench, deadlift.... 6'3 , 210lbs... Out of everyone I roll with ( all ranks) his approach has been nearly flawless.
I've been watching your rolling commentaries ever since I started about a year ago and lately I've been noticing exactly what's happening before you say it, including mistakes or intentions while rolling. It used to all be nonesense to me but I think I'm really starting to get it. Thanks for making so many of these! I would love to see you roll with mikey musumeci!
I am the big boys. That said there’s a bajillion videos on how little guys roll against us. Not the other way around. We just gotta learn the hard way to deal with limber little guys.
What a great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are doing a terrific job putting out content with consistent high quality. I now know that when you upload a video is going to be worth watching. Thanks a lot, Jordan! Keep it up!!!!!
Great roll on that guy is not a blue belt or shouldn’t be. He has the patience of a brown. He never freaked out and his judo is ridiculous. Great job as always.
Great video. That camp looked awesome. All of my favorite BJJ RU-vidrs (you, Jedi, Tyler, and Carson). I wish I could have been there. As for rolling with the big boys (I call them 'farm animals'), I'm happy to stay on top and let the submissions come instead of trying to force something to happen. I think you're right that your success will come from taking the back and getting a collar. Your videos are so good. I love how you include both principles and techniques. Super helpful. I admired how you humbly admitted your difficulty pulling the John Wayne sweep on a guy that big and whose base was so solid. Keep up the good work.
It was an incredible experience. Definitely come next year if you can! I'll be announcing a US camp very soon as well. Thank you for the kind words too 🙏👊
Just wanna say I love your videos and learn sooo much. I just entered my first tournament as white belt training for only 3 weeks and brought home the gold! 🥇 Idk if I posted this on one your of other videos but I just had to share bc these vids help so much. Just the little things like fighting for underhooks. 🙏
It used to! The IOC decided to get rid of them, banning any attacks where the hands grab the legs, so the sport would look more visually distinct from wrestling. So a number of throws that were part of Jigoro Kano's curriculum were no longer allowed in the Olympics. Judo schools trained with these new competition rules in mind. Unfortunately this does judoka a disservice, because they are less equipped to defend attacks from wrestlers (abd don't have their own offensive single/double leg attacks). All just to make the sport better on television for the average viewer. Let that be a warning to the bjj community! The IOC can really mess your sport up, they do not care about the history of it at all. (They've done something similar with rock climbing)
10:13 - I prefer to roll with people bigger than I am. I was just training with a friend who is a brown belt and 6'8" or so, probably like +255. It's the only way to know that your technique is strong enough, just like lifting a heavier weight in the weight room separates good form from bad. Bad form doesn't work or gets injured. Bigger people require more energy, full stop. Additionally, the ends of their limbs are muich stronger levers than a shorter person's. They also have a much larger "inside position" to defend. I find these concepts to be effective tools. I love rolling with judoka. Our black belts are all wrestlers from birth, so stand-up is one of the strongest parts of our jiujitsu. It's great training when someone can threaten a completely different set of techniques on the feet. Also, this dude is clearly a killer. The amount of force he's generating from his frames and movement on the bottom is crazy, if I'm seeing what it looks like I'm seeing. Shout out to Chris! Oh, hey Jordan, I'm finally getting around to doing a martial arts RU-vidr podcast, would you want to be a guest? Thanks for the great videos, as always! - Jared
Well we're rolling not competing so intensity isn't the same as it would be in a tournament. Not that we're going light but not competition intensity either.
I’m a 52 year old 2 stripe white belt 215 lbs. My main training partner is a world champion power lifter, 37 years old, also 2 stripe white belt, has a 460 bench and a 650+ deadlift. So yeah, I get crushed like pineapple. That level of strength is like a superpower.
Jordan you inspired the freaking hell out of me and what you just did to that huge man was every single reason why I joined jiujitsu. It's the only martial art on the planet that would of enabled you to submit that man and control him the way you did. You need to call your instructor and just thank him for the gifts he bestowed upon you because I just witnessed a lamb slaughter a lion. That sparing session was so inspiring to watch a little BJJ person take out a super huge and in shape Judoka. Jordan god bless you, I bet your were on cloud nine, submitting this guy. I could tell this dude was not no ordinary blue belt and was freaking strong as an ox and skillful. I actually thought he might get you but you showed me with lots of training and superior technique you can conquer even the biggest problems in life. Damn that was awesome to watch. It's like something triggered in you and you saw and realized that you had to totally change your mount game on him because he was trying to muscle you off which he was close a few times and then you just switched your mount variations and piece by piece got him to his back. Hey man that was jiu-jitsu at its finest and you reminded me of my Sensei Megaton. Megaton has a very similar body style to yours and it's so fun to watch him dismantle giants. He always tells me, Timothy we must train so that when the devil comes we will be ready.❤❤❤
thank you for the amazing video my dude I've been trying to learn bjj for 5-6 months and I've always been for the more real scenarios thank you thank you much love :)
I like rolling with the big guys. My main training partner is a huge dude. I find myself having a bit of success with the sacrifice throws. What ends up working is sumi gaeshi, tomo, Kata guruma, and single legs once in a while. Fighting from the bottom is REALLY hard. I often go for spider guard so there's less pressure. sometimes leads to triangle(hard to finish on biggies) or it transitions to omoplata or armbar. I end up going for legs game when I can. Even staying on top is hard, so I switch position often. Kesa gatame armbars work if I can sneak them fast.
Brother I had no idea you’re struggling with mental health. I wouldn’t have imagined in a 100 years just by looking at you. But same goes for me as I’m told. Hope you know how cool you are Jordan, all the best 🙏
Thanks man. I have ADHD which comes with some pros but a lot of cons as well. My mind and emotional state can be a roller coaster at times. All good though. I still get on with it and try to be the best person I can for my self and others as I can 🙂
Love your videos! You've seen my comments plenty, so you know I am the bigger guy (6'4", 230 pounds). I'm just a dumbass white belt, but so far I have the most trouble beating a good butterfly guard. Otherwise, against guys my size or bigger, I prefer half-guard and side control over mount. Often my opponent's belly is big enough I can't hold a solid mount (white belt!) but I feel much more stable in top half-guard or side control.
Jordan you look like you had a hard time to find the solution on this one 😅 gosh he looks strong and he is obviously smart...super sweet video at the end thank you again
Thanks man! He's really good and really strong. I didn't mention it in the video but I actually hadn't eaten in 4 days due to being sick, so my energy levels were pretty low. Next year I want to get a full judo round in with him. I'm confident I'm going to get thrown around lol
I'm 5'10, 200lb, and I much rather fight big guys (usually compete bellow the class weight limit). I find they're slower and easier to "handle" than smaller and faster opponents
I agree. I'm 180lbs right now and I'd rather compete agaisnt someone 230 than 200-210. The bigger guys are often slower like you said and more often than not less technical than their lighter counterparts.
I love this video, I train with people way heavier then me and sometimes can be a bit frustrating because of their strength but seen this video is great cause you just show how hard can it be training with a experience opponent in Judo or wrestling and even though they are a blue belt in bjj they can be really hard to submit. I used to think I was bad rolling with heavy people who has experienced in judo and wrestling. Thanks Jordan for this video it was really great and fun to watch.
I love rolling with big guys because I think it’s the best test of the effectiveness of my BJJ. Of course it could also be the reason I tend to get injured…😅
He's insanely strong and way stronger and heavier, that helps. I think it really depends on which judo school you were taught? Some judo schools focus 100% on competition judo from start, so they'll only do and learn the olympic rule styles, which is quite limited. Some schools which offer a more oldschool program have lots of ne-wazi techniques and maybe even some sparring @@muhammadkamil3558
this is what a pretty average roll for me (125 pounds) feels like. I feel like i’m making the right decisions a lot of the times but because of size differences these things just don’t work. such as literally anything in mount or north south 😂 i find the more glued to them you are, the easier it is to just roll on top. against big guys i really just focus on looking for opportunities to take the back or attack the shoulders since you can create a lot of leverage off of those attacks
Great vid! Huge fan of your channel, just a lil constructive criticism - this one was a touch too heavy on the replay imo. Ive loved the way you usually do it with like one replay and then you keep moving, keeps the momentum of the roll goin for the viewer. Love your stuff!
Definetly see your point and it's something that's tough to balance. Education Vs entertainment but I just try to commit fully to education. So when I want to give a lot of context I have to replay certain parts multiple times is the thing. I'll upload the full unedited roll to my second channel 🙂
Rolling with big men ? Even with a big grappling experience, these are the rounds where I learn the less. Nearly freezing a waste of my BJJ money. Lot of em rely on strength, afraid to play bottom positions, and have poor strategy selection as they often stall and fix still their sub attempt. In the last years of my journey, I have known only one big guy who is very technical. Still roll him this year, he's about to become a purple belt. I love rolling with him, he's strong, but especially very technical.
