“When people say feminism started in the 19th century, it’s historically inaccurate...”- Judy Chicago
Feminism, in fact, started with the publication of medieval writer and historiographer Christine de Pisan’s 1405 “Le Livre de la Cité des Dames” (The Book of the City of Ladies), chronicling 500 great women in history “who had been erased.”
“The City of Ladies” is a special group installation on the Fourth Floor included in “Judy Chicago: Herstory.” Displaying Chicago’s work alongside artworks by more than 80 women and genderqueer artists, this presentation realizes Chicago’s own alternative canon and illustrates how “women have been struggling to make their voices heard for centuries.
