The thunderous applause when she walks in, and when asked if her voice was so well known that it would be immediately recognizable, and if she sings and dances - well, it was 100% deserved. She was the greatest entertainer of the 20th Century, and even a perfunctory glance at her vinyl and celluloid legacy will confirm that bold statement. She was revered by people, and rightly so. Judy Forever...
I just love at the end when discussing her upcoming role in Valley of the Dolls that "I'm the only one in the film that doesn't take pills". She had a sense of humor and a sense of irony.
Incredible she mentions being in town for her daughter's wedding and adoring her new son-in-law. That was Liza's first marriage to Peter Allen. It's crazy to know how people lives have played out decades later when you watch these old clips.
*For those who don't know, Senator Dirksen was quite famous at the time and had a well known nickname: "The Wizard of Ooze". It was Tony Randall's witty way of saying he knew it was Judy.*
@@VesnaVK "The wizard of ooze" was a very inside political joke and hardly known to the general public. Tony was referring to Judy's low-pitched nicotine-infused voice. She had just spoken before Tony made that remark. Later she explained that she had the flu and so sounded like "Senator Somebody." Judy, who really had no interests outside of show business, had never heard of Dirksen.
@@VesnaVK Nope. She laughed because the audience laughed heartily at Tony pretending to mistake her for a man. Judy at least did know that Senators were men. (Of 100 senators, only 1 was female then.) Instead of getting Dirksen's name wrong- it's the first time she ever heard it- she called the Senate Minority Leader, a towering power broker who had been around forever, "Senator Somebody." Judy's furthest foray into politics was trying to get JFK in the sack. After all, she may have reasoned, Marlene Dietrich did.
The greatest entertainer of all time. I love watching this. Judy Garland was sensational and so humble with it. O so what a great gift she had. I salute you Miss Garland.
Drunk or not, she was, in my opinion, the greatest female performer of the 20th century. No one will ever approach her talent. Today's singers may have the vocal gymnastics but they do not have the 'clear as a bell' vocals that one hears from her in "Wizard of Oz" and the innumerable other movies that most young people are not even aware of. Watch her in "Meet Me in St. Louis" sometime. She was brilliant. May she rest in peace.
Judy Garland will always be THE WORLD'S GREATEST ENTERTAINER. Her talent was GOD given. Just listen to her Carnegie Hall CD. The mere mention of her name still screams TALENT.Judy had the ability to touch the soul of every person who listens to her voice. Judy's unique gift was that she lived each song she sang. Millions of people on youtube alone, type in her name to hear this LEGEND's voice. Show Biz today, lacks real talent and new fans emerge every day when they hear Judy for the first time.
I LOVE HER!!!!!! JUDY you're awesome!!!!! You are SO funny in this video!!!!!! RIP Judy Garland loved by many and missed by lots and lots, You will always be on our TVs and in our hearts
One of the greatest talents to ever exist, yet treated like dirt by her promoters, and actually living in poverty at times because she was constantly swindled.
madamerotten I wish I was alive at the time to help! She died shortly before my 10th birthday; I only knew her from seeing The Wizard Of Oz when it came on TV was a year, in January, I believe.
"I'm the only one in the book that doesn't take pills." ::sigh:: We've been watching reruns of The Judy Garland Show on GetTV. She was so gracious and easy going. Always happy to let costars have their moment in the spotlight. She made it look like they were having so much fun! When she made a mistake she just laughed it off and kept going. :)
I am one of the few who felt her singing was the least of her talents. She was above all a tremendous actress. Few give her the credit she deserved as an actress, but she was totally competent playing any part. I refer everyone to her performance in "Judgement at Nuremberg". It was strictly a dramatic role late in her life, and she nailed it.
How cute she looked when Bennet Serf said " That voice can only belong to only one Lady in the world and that is Judy Garland" She derived so much pleasure entertaining and pleasing her audience and her Audience never left her side which is why she always was kind to her fans.. God Rest your soul Judy!
Judy was a one of a kind who will never be matched again as an all around top female performer. She was the music and a total entertainer. It seems strange now that Judy was around the same age as Whitney when she died from an "accidental" overdose. RIP Judy, Whitney, and Amy Winehouse. Gone way too soon.....
She was a MARVELOUS performer, totally used and abused by the studios. They literally drove her to addiction.. But I would challenge anyone to find a warmer, kinder heart in all of Hollywood.
Judy Garland only had two years left on this earth when she did this episode. Hard to imagine she would have turned 90 years old on June 10th 2012. One of the greatest entertainers this world has ever known. Happy Birthday Judy wherever you are!!
Judy's voice was extremely recognizable & even when i close my eyes and listen to her first response when the clicker didnt work. Judy was a good sport & very funny. Her face glowed hearing the audience go wild each time they applauded. On many occasions when she wasnt in great voice, she respected her audiences & she came alive as a show went on. Her 1st Hollywood Palace TV ahowin 1965 is proof that her voice got stronger. Watch her during the "palace medley" @ the end of the show, on RU-vid.
The ovation given Ms. Garland was truly outstanding. However, in my mind it pales slightly to the reception given to Jimmy Durante on the January 31, 1965 episode, both when he entered the stage and when he left. It was a total love fest. Also, the audience greeting for Liberace, on the June 3, 1956 show is almost as grand. Both spots are posted here on YT.
She had such a great sense of humor, saying that she was the only one in the cast of "Valley" that didn't take pills. What a shame she didn't do the movie at the end.
God, it kills me that they cancelled the Judy Garland Show. You can tell how proud she was of it. When Tony Randall asks if she's equally known as a television performer, she hesitantly rings the bell because her show was only on for one season, but when the audience applauds, it looks like she wants to say thank you to the audience then she rests her head on John Dalys' shoulder to give him a hug. She was so great.
@curb1510 Frances Gumm Talent was so amazing that she Had to be discovered. A pure/powerful voice was so unique & amazing & very few had the ability to touch people so deeply like Judy could. Her voice came from a diaphram that was so solid, & could keep her vibrato @ a low volume which is very difficult for a singer. Her mark on this world should be hailed as a blessing because so many of the ppl still are discovering her gaining more fans thankstechnology. Forget her personal problems & enjoy!
Garland was just such a one-of-a-kind person. See her early MGM films for simply incredible dancing! Her dance moves were without flaw in The Pirate and several other films. Considering the popular music of her day, her voice was kind of edgy in an interesting way. There were times that her voice, too, was without flaw. She got in trouble early on as a teenager while making The Wizard of Oz, cause of the ridiculous demands of long hours of film work-too much for a kid. Pills, & later, drink.
According to a memoir by one of the show's producers, Judy was indeed not only drunk, but was rude, belligerent, and so late that they were just about to put on a substitute. She pulled herself together at the last second and got the biggest ovation in the show's history.
Wowsie, wow -wow, Judy Garland. She'll always be the loveliest and most talented. Judy and Mickey made my youth tolerable in their wonderful black and white movies. So cheerie, and upbeat. The talent just oozed out. I knew Mickey was sooo in love with her. I shall leave this world with their memories intact inside my brain.
Yup! She was fed barbituates at an early age by Hollywood. But, she was also an animated human by nature and some mistook her behavior as being "drunk" or other when she was just really being herself.
I can remember seeing her in the late '60's on TV, maybe the Tonight Show, but my mom, who remembered her whole career, said.."She's sick." She wasn't singing well. She had her hair in the real short version, boy-like...and she looked more older than her years. I felt sorry for her...but, as with the rest of you, I rejoice in her talent and what she left to us to enjoy.
That's because she's signing her name in front of an audience and writing it on a vertical board (much hard than writing it on a flat sheet of paper). Her handwriting was actually very beautiful.
Yes Judy had her share of down moments but &as a fan, I also understand she was a real person with flaws & troubles. Sadly, Being so famous, she made headlines for her Troubles as well as her Triumphs, but she had much more than the "sad/bad" times. I wish people could understand that. Why most people are fixated on re enforcing all the neg press she got @ the end of her life is beyond me?Give Judy the respect she deserves because had always gave that to her audiences & told us so many times.
