That is VERY kind of you. It’s fun to make videos, but I think I would be a little miserable if I was doing it every day. It’s so much work, and so much of the work is video editing as opposed to working with sound.

I hated my Moog One 16 when I first got it. Clinical. Soulless. But then I learned how to actually use it, how to feed random noise and modulation to introduce the instability, send single voices whizzing around the stereo field at different rates modulated by KB. Holy moly, after I realised how to actually use it, and dove deep into the mod matrix, I made sounds I never thought possible. The fact is the people who don't like these synths just dislike them due to ignorance. The fact that it starts clinically on the initialised patch, IMHO, is because you can't introduce stability, only remove it - so to have the full range of tonal variance, it must, by nature start clinically. A simple 'vintage' knob that introduced random noise and lfos to filters, pitch KB velocity etc would have sold them more synths to lazy people. I'll never sell my Moog One 16, and I think buying one would actually be wise just to stick it in a box.
Exactly! I do think a single “vintage” knob would have changed perception of it after the initial release, but I much prefer being able to adjust things as I see fit and save mod matrices that I like to reuse across patches. You are not wrong about buying one to keep it in the box; this is a future classic, and when they stop producing them, their value is going to only go up.

_the people who don't like these synths just dislike them due to ignorance._ Not necessarily. Analog polys are perhaps the most tempermental and idiosyncratic production instruments of all. I've got 7 of them (OB-Xa, JP-8, A6 etc), none of them are 'perfect' to the degree that a model D or an Odyssey is perfect. More complexity means much more can go wrong; compounding with a greater potential for design errors in the first place. Musicians - especially synthesists - are _also_ rather unusual. So someone not fitting a particular poly like a glove is hardly a matter of ignorance, but a matter of preference - or any other number of considerations. Just because I think an instrument is great doesn't mean it's the same _or even any good_ for you and everyone. PEACE :o)
I grew up hearing a lot of sounds like this in my favorite horror movies and tv series in the 80's. So I really love the sound of this. I hope you're still making videos. Subbed!
The first patch and the one at 23:55 is amazing. It's perfect-a prime example of how good this synth sounds-the mid-range-ey tone is so soulful; the aftertouch-modulation you programmed is spot-on. And the random-delay really produces that vintage feel (I didn't know about that feature). Really lovely sounds and very nicely done (super-cool desk, by the way).

I have done the same exact thing. Bought a 16 and have just barely touched the surface, but I am experimenting!!! AMAZING sounds you can get!!!! Love her exuberant attitude and love of the analog synth!!!!!!
Indeed, I love her videos and exuberant attitude, but alas, after 3 weeks trying to find a niche for it in my studio, I decided to return it. If I could have only one synth, it would be the Moog One, but I love my vintage Prophets, Oberheims, Korgs and other Moog’s too much!

DSLRs have a capped recording limit because of tax reasons. For most cams there is a way to disable it. For example there is a tweak called "open memories" that disables this on Sony DSLRs. Great video, love the Moog and your straight forward commentary.

I also really wanted to showcase the raw sound, because I’ve heard so many people bashing it; it’s one of those synths that really rewards time spent learning what it is capable of and an imagination for how that power and flexibility can be used. Some people just want a sweet spot synth that you can turn on and off, which I understand. This is a sound designer’s synth in a performance body.

Thanks! Yeah, this synth gets a lot of flack, but I think it's mostly from people who balk at the price. I don't see how they could make it for less and maintain the quality, and the sound is fantastic but requires, at least, a solid fundamental understanding of sound design.
Great vid. I have the Matriarch and Grandmother and was told the same thing about them being difficult to get a sound. I think to many rely on presets and don’t want to actually explore synthesis in creating original sounds. I want a Moog One but don’t have the room. Going to have to get rid of a bunch of synths to make room for it.

That being said, I would never fault someone for using presets in production; it’s not for everyone, but I just know that for me, designing the sound is a big part of my voice as an artist. The One is definitely a sound designer’s synth and would be an insane purchase for just the presets hah As for making room for it, yeah, it’s big and heavy, but I wouldn’t part with anything near and dear to you to make space for it!
Do you think the quantum/iridium are easy e ough to learn synthesis on. I read its like pigments, but the presets ive heard on RU-vid sound completely different to me.
Awesome first video! I own a Moog 1 also and now a Moog Modular 10 (grabbed one as Moog was sold and who knows if they will ever be made in the US again). Sadly.
Thanks for sharing. It's an awesome synth. And the sky's the limit for wandering off and enjoying the experience of sound design and routing. I have 'one' and appreciate it greatly. That being said, as MOOG's flagship, my opinion on what everyone can't seem to put their finger on regarding its reputation to disappoint, is quite simply, the sound. No, it doesn't sound sterile, It's rich, warm , crunchy and organic and quite obviously analog, but the sonic fidelity or harmonic expression is bordering on dull. The body of the oscillators are certainly apparent, but their articulation resides further back in the overall tone. Almost as if there is a mild, yet perceptual distance to the voicing. A kind of slight low pass roll off, or lo fi sheen, no matter how you drive the filter section. The UI is brilliant, the capabilities are inarguable, and the potential to explore is divine, but the raw tone can often feel like a nearing orgasm robbed of its climax. Played beside a Deckard's Dream or Prophet 10, the distinctions are palpable. - Sulking aside, I still am yet to part with it. - Thanks again.
Sounds great. I think I would personally go for the 8 voice myself as I always find 16 voice analog synths are really difficult to sit in a mix when you have other gear playing along side it.
Thank you! Yeah, I think 8 is plenty for a lot of people, but I really prefer more voices for preventing voice stealing when designing patches that have long release times. I also just love taking up the whole mix with a monster 16 voice patch, but that works in the style of music I make :) I guess I’d just always prefer to have too many voices than too few hah
@@dimund For sure the good thing about Moog One is you can allocate the voices whereas the REV2 or Prologue you are sort of stuck with either 8 or 16 and that's it. Plus it's tritimbral so I can see where more voices might help.

26:07 I get the stuck notes as well, with no external midi connected. It happens fairly often unfortunately. Overall though it's a great piece of a gear and I'm happy to have one (8voice over here)

Absolutely!! I use up 8 voices super quick, and it would be a completely different experience with that as the upper limit. I get why Moog made the 8 voice version, but I think it really doesn’t do the synth justice.
I went to show someone this video one day and it was gone... Glad it's back... How many voices do you typically find yourself using..? I don't really get why they offer 16 and 8... That's gotta be a good feeling having that in your set up... Do you ever find yourself just staring at it even when it's off..? :)
Aww, thank you so much!! Yeah, I got a little overwhelmed with the response and kinda “noped” myself off of the internet for a minute. Feeling better prepared this time around, so there will be more to come :) Tbh, I can use up all 16 voices pretty quick. If I’m doing any type of layered sound with some layers being in unison and playing chords. Or if I’m doing multi work where I have split parts across the keyboard. I also just love tue sound of a huge pads with 16 voices panning randomly across the stereo field. Lastly, more voices means longer note decays before voice stealing. I guess the 8 voice was an attempt to make it accessible to more people. I have no idea how trivial it is to cut the voice count during assembly 🤔 It’s a gift to have in my space. I don’t have a lot of room, so yes, I do find myself staring at it even when it’s not in use - either because of how beautiful it is to look at or I’m thinking about sounds to design :) Thank you for the thoughtful comment!
@@dimund nice..! I like getting to see videos showcasing home set ups with nice hardware... Videos that show what people who really like music production and are very invested in it came up with as far as equipment and workflow... The thing you said that originally stood out to me was how others would say it sounds "sterile and thin"... When people say stuff like that it tells me a lot... That is a criticism of a lot of older synths particularly ones out of japan... The thing many people don't seem to get is the sounds that came in those synths were designed to be starting points... Not finished products like many who make statements like "thin and sterile" want and expect... I call those "npc producers"... The original concept many synth companies had was to provide cool ideas and starting points... But nowadays that seems to have become largely lost... Now music production has been geared to be more cookie cutter and I'm of the opinion so much "music" these days sounds so similar and lacks the magic of the original approach... So long story short it's nice to stumble upon those who understand what it takes to make something special and unique... To me it takes time, dedication, and nice equipment that pushes those who take the time to learn it down paths less traveled... Keep up the great work..!
Really humbled and flattered but this! I will do my best to keep at it. I definitely agree that music has gotten caught up in our culture of immediacy. I will say, however, the ones who really put in the work stand out. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala comes to mind and his work is always a source of motivation for me; it’s so much work to really dig in, but the result speaks for itself :)
I got the Quantum MK2 now which is great. I'm considering to get an analog synth as well. What do you think of the OBX8. I really like the sound coming from it vs say the Prophet, but I have not actually played on any. Moog One is maybe a tad too costly for me at this moment.
Awesome! Yah, the Mk2 is fantastic. I think the OB-X8 sounds fantastic and I loved playing it, but the interface felt very limited after having used the One for so long. If you are looking for bread and butter analog sounds, I think that or the OB-6 are great. If you want deeper sound design in the analog poly realm, I think the Moog One kind of takes the cake, though the polybrute from Arturia is a great option that is radically more affordable. I’d probably go with an OB-X8. I’d own one if I had more space. I’d maybe hold off for a while, though. Moog just teased their new polysynth last week, and I have a feeling it’s going to be awesome.
@@dimund. Yes I can understand about the interface and flexibility. I feel the Quantum has very deep and flexible features that are a joy to work with. I mean 3 oscillators that you can even combine with another sound to get 6 at the same time and each instrument has 6 LFOs. Mind blown. I have seen a few things from Polybrute but it did not jump out at me, will check it out more. I will look at Moog One a bit more but yea it is 11k Euro vs 5k euro. I do feel a bit is that I can do quite heavy design in the Quantum, am I correct in thinking that it can mimic a lot of the sound from Moog One? (at least mostly). I will mostly do more realistic instruments from Kontakt, mixed with a few synth sounds from Quantum and then have a few Analog instruments so my music is not as synth heavy as more pure synth musicians. I think if I would be pure synth focused the Moog One would make more sense probably. I'm not even sure I need an analog but the Moogs and OB sound very nice every time I listen to them.
I thought a bit about Moog One vs say OB X8 and also played with some VST. It is leaning towards a Moog purchase. I realized what I like with hardware is being able to build patches. If I want presets I can use VST. Arturia Pigment sounds great but it does not seem as fun to design with. Designing instruments with Quantum has been a blast and I can imagine it is quite similar with Moog One even though Im sure it sounds quite different.
Tim said the stereo is a bit lacking by default, and there is a hidden setting to randomly pan a VCO, but it is hidden. I don't have a Moog one. When I get enough money in the future I think I would like one also, and a Bass Flute
Yeah, the spread function. He makes it sound like it is buried, but it’s really not. The One only has 1 layer for all menus, so it’s pretty easy to find, and it makes a lot of sense for it to be in the VCA. Tbh, I’d always prefer a stereo synth to be mono by default. There are so many ways you can play with and mod the stereo field that I rarely end up using the spread feature, but I’m glad it’s there :)

Yea that sounds good. It sounds like its own instrument. My son said it sounds modern. I thought that was revealing. He's 23 and is hip to what is modern. Funny.. But I get that.
To be honest alot of the classic sythersizor sounds of the 80s and 90s are back right now in most genres most of it coming from somewhere sythersizor emulsions and most who use the sounds dont realise where it originally come from. I made lots of Moog style sounds in My 20s without even realising it.
Ooooo lucky!!! Wish I could go back to the first day it arrived; I can’t recall ever being that excited, overwhelmed, and appreciative all at the same time. First thing you should do: go into settings and turn off oscillator compensation and set noise reduction to 0dB. Also make sure you are on the most recent firmware.
Man! It's the sound designer who has to bring the beauty out of a synth. People shouldn't blame the synth for their inability to sound design. So for anyone believing that a synth can be soulless or clinical, it's really a reflection of their inability to sound design.
I definitely agree with this for anyone who bashes a synth because they can’t get it to sound good. I would, however, say that I’m glad there are synths out there that are just one big sweetspot for instrumentalists. I imagine a lot of using would sound pretty bad if not for some of those workhorse tones like the old Oberheims, Prophets, Minimoogs, etc.
@@dimund Thanks for pointing this out; so I don‘t need to write it. I‘m also glad to have some synths where you init a patch, add a 2nd oscillator, turn the cutoff down - and they sound good. It definitely saves much time. On the other hand I love to invest more time in synths like the Prophet X (don‘t have a Moog One) which sound meh at the beginning, but after some brainwork and lot of knob-twisting … WOW! It‘s good to have both categories of synths. One thing which has prevented me from buying an MO up to now - besides a minor price issue 😬 - is the fan. I only play with headphones, but neverthess this reminds me of old PCs with their nerve-wrecking fan noise. Does the fan disturb you?
So many great points! As for the fan, I rarely ever think about it, and I know some users who have added aftermarket fans that are near silent at their highest speeds; I might do it just for fun, but the noise is really not an issue, because I don’t really ever have the One on when I’m recording vocals or mixing. For comparison, my 2019 MacBook Pro was louder on average.
Ha that envelopes bug was driving me crazy forever! I sent mine back to the factory for service because of it, they were thinking I had a faulty unit, but it turns out it's a firmware issue. So the official word from Moog is that the envelopes not firing correctly is a bug that will hopefully be addressed in the next firmware update, whenever that happens.....Great video thanx for your thoughts - I really feel the same as you about this synth... It's amazing and misunderstood (so far anyway) but I also kind of have a love/hate relationship w/it - mostly due to bugs I've found and the wonky af MIDI.. anyway, I really dig a couple of the patches u programmed, hmu if u want to trade patches with me I have some that maybe you'll like, too!

Yeah, I do hear that comparison made, but the Sequential lineup doesn't really have anything that matches up with the One in terms of specs - analog voice count, modulation, IO, build quality, etc. - so I don't fully understand where it comes from. Looking at something like the OB-X8 alone, it has half the voices of the One at more than half its price. Additionally, it is lacking the modulation capabilities, IO, and effects that the One has. Don't get me wrong, the new Oberheim sounds amazing, but I do think the One is priced accordingly for what it is; that isn't to say it's not expensive - it is - but the value for the money is there. I believe @TimShoebridge called it a sports car, and I agree with him; it's not necessary, but damn if it isn't a revelatory experience when used :D
@EllisDeWaldOfficial I have in the past. It’s a massive time commitment and the pay and industry is trash for everyone except the the very top. Kind of reminds me of… music! Hahaha. I’ll stick to my reliable corporate gig that I won’t age out of anytime soon and that affords me the time and resources to create. But I do appreciate your sentiment ☺️

Hi and Thank you , I am so ready to put my order in for a Moog One from Sweetwater this week. I have an OB6 that is good I like the OBX8 better but there is something about the Moog One that I want. So I am fighting badly with OB8 or a Moog One. Any thoughts and help would love anyones input. I felt let me buy Moog now and worry about getting the OB8 later.
So, I’ve definitely been asked about the two quite a bit, and I personally think it comes down to whether you want a sweetspot synth or a sound designer’s synth. The OB-X8 is going to just sound good whenever you turn it on. The One will required you to really sit down and learn how to use it’s insanely extensive modulation capabilities. That’s pretty much it - price aside. I love the sound of the new Oberheim, but I would not want to try to get into programming it with that tiny screen. The Moog is so obviously meant for sound designers, because there is so much emphasis on making the screen and navigation a breeze. It’s the most intuitive and easy front panel/UI I have ever used. Hope this helps!

I'm a pretty passionate sound designers but not a notably good keyboard player. I didn't want a One before this video, but you just changed that. (I did already want some Shelford Channels tho 👀)
The only other synth that I have felt is similarly capable of such a fluid sound design workflow is the Waldorf Quantum/Iridium KB. Even then, I think the One still has it beat in terms of workflow so simply because each mod source on the panel has a dedicated destination button. I also love that each section has its own dedicated menu focus button. Such a small detail, but it radically changes the experience of programming. Couple that with the raw sound and number of mod sources/types, and it’s just incredible. Future classic, for sure.
Yes! I have had so many requests for this since I started putting out videos last month. I am working on putting together a list of my favorite patches, and then making sure they are all level-matched, in addition to going back through and adding some expression control for the modwheel, XY pad, and EXP pedals. I will announce it hear when it is available for download :D
Yes! I will be putting out a soundset at some point when I feel I have enough that I consider top tier. I’ll need to figure out the best way to do that, but it will happen. Sharing my work solo work is pretty new - still finishing my first batch of tracks for release - so I’m working on getting a lot of pieces in place! Just a compound 3rd between on a saw wave :) Has some really, really nice distortion and eqing on it. Great track and love that whole album. Long time strokes fan, for sure 🤘🏼
Sounds fantastic nothing comes close to it analog wise. I am still happy with my original Oberheim OBXa. Some of those patches actually have the same or similar sounds on my OB but oberheim still has a much fatter sound. It’s too bad that moog or any vendor will not ever design a moog matriarch and Subsequent 37 combined into a 16 voice synth with the fat huge sound of the mono synths combined. If they did that there would not be one single synth on this planet that would even come close to it.
I am now contemplating getting the Moog One. Thanks for the review. More are welcome. Does it have a plugin for Live 11? I like the way the Moog is used by Jan Blomqvist. (Check it out.. Jan Blomqvist live at Pink Lake, Ukraine on RU-vid. It's Trance style using the Moog Little Phatty. I like how he uses it.)
Let's dig in...Bronx, NY here, checking in..There's nothing thin about a Moog, not that I have ever heard, and Moogs are full of rich harmonics. RU-vid and the Internet is full of simpletons and clowns that have nothing else to do except compare, complain, and be critical, because they have no real commercial /underground content. You get a Moog, here comes someone comparing it to a Behringer. You get a Montage ,they start yapping about a Kronos ,yet most of these folks actually complete an LP. Many women are not concerned with being musicians, making beats, being a synth guru, just like men, yet there's more men pretending. Much of the time people are not encouraging women to pursue a career in music. My grandmother, uncles, aunt, mother, and myself played instruments, yet the so called gatekeepers kept everyone except these good ole boys from breaking into music. I had a conversation with someone yesterday, and she expressed interest with learning DJ culture, learning to sample, do sound design, and create music. Anyway, except for a few of folks out here, take the opinions about the Moog and anything else as valid as a talking garbage can. I want to get a Matriarch and merge it with what I already have. I only have the Roland HS60 so far as analog synths go, and I m fine with that for now..
I think the Moog One sounds great but way out of My price range and after 16 years using a DAW called Reason, I can pretty much make any sound I want, many patches sound identical to Moog Minimoog or Moog one or Grandmother, Rolald 303, Yamaha DX7, Obrahim ObXa, all sounds I have used. Also I dont have the space for a huge physical sythersizor as Moog one is very big almost the size of a upright piano.

I'm not. I'm working on a body of music for release, but I doubt it will be done until sometime in 2023. I'll likely put it up on Bandcamp in addition to streaming when the time comes, and I will obviously talk about it on my channel :D
Saying it was two years on the Moog... and you seem to imply you're still learning... that just gave me a bit of hope I'll actually be able to learn how to use the minibrute I picked up a few months ago. And being basically an ancient punk rocker from the LES back many years, its quite a formidable piece to try to wrap my head around. So, thank you oodles for some unknown support. So cool that you were in the LES! I lived there when I first moved to NYC. And yes, there is a lot to unpack with this synth, because of the depth of its modulation capabilities. For an analog synth to have this number of mod sources and destinations, and the resolution to which you can modulate things (+/- 0.1%), it's just mind-blowing. On top of that, there are multiple expression tools - mod wheel, 2 x expression pedals, XYZ pad, aftertouch, etc. You get the idea. There is a lot to this synth, and it requires - like any instrument I have ever played - a commitment to sit down with it more days of the week than not. So, whatever you are using, just keep at it, and you will get better. Before I started making these videos, I thought my sound design was really lousy - even though I've been working with synths for over a decade now. I hadn't even realized that I had gotten so much better at sound design over the years, because I've just always been focusing on what I need to improve lol. You'll get there, so just keep at it! Nothing happens over night :D
