Shonen is the death of creativity no joke shonen jump will take your work and turn it into a mid piece of art that has to include highschool element for no other reason then to just vaguely gesture at the age of their audience. I mean fuck boruto is closer to the original concept of naruto then naruto is and honestly the worst part of boruto is that the shonen element and the slice of life family conflict shit dont connect on any meaningful way.

I was never crazy about JJK but it was pretty enjoyable. The whole clusterfuck fight that's been happening for like a year and a half has been a slog.

JJK use of Binding Vows to adjust/affect powers and abilities is by far the best part of its power system. The problem is that it is criminally under-used. Domain Expansion is super hype, but it ends up killing that hype due to over use the instant the Gojo/Sukuna fight starts.

I never liked JJK. It felt like generic shonen from the beginning. I agree 100% about the magic system was trash. Most of the abilities seem like complete bullshit with arbitrary rules.

Im not sure where I read this but. Shonen isn't a genre its a marketing demographic. So its actual content does matter but just who they think will read it.

The first 5 episodes of season 2 is the best JJK was and ever will be. I have been saying it ever since I watched the second season and I keep saying it now that I caught up to the manga.

Might be a hot take. But for me, most of everything is either okay or mid. Movies, TV shows, anime, comics (this includes all comics not just western), and so on. And I keep hearing from people how "nothing is good anymore". No, it's always been like that. It's just that most people have higher standards when they grow up than when they were a child. I refuse to watch anything I liked as a kid. I know I will hate it when I do watch it. But most stuff is just, okay. I don't think everything or most of everything is crap like Sturgeon's law, but I do believe that he was right about most stuff just not being great or amazing. Most are going to be okay or mid. I was always the weird one who seemed to never "like" anything growing. Even my partner thinks I hate everything. When I'm just a critical person and always have been. So, it's rare for me to like anything. The story has to be good, not have massive plotholes or a lot of them, make sense, have good characters, and not just be cliché heavy. My partner can't stand watching things with me because I am able to literally guess how a story is going to end in a movie within the first 10 minutes. Or when he thought I would like a movie, which I did, I still guessed the plot of it right off the bat and he hated it. All he told me was it was a time travel movie and but time travel was done in a way I have not seen before.

What i really hated that the ancient brain demon troll got actually fleshed out and more interesting, yeah he is a troll but he is really into comedy, which in that fight really is shown and challenged. Loke its s struggling comedian breaking reality with his jokes vs a funny troll trying to outfunny him into feeling not funny. Its great. And of course, what kills the investment is that anytime someone gets interesting, they die. Dunno the most interesting yuji did so far having an actual aspect of him being a good person that affects the blackpilled persecution lawyer and does fight him off enough while reminding the lawyer why he became a persecutor, not revenge. But thats miniscule annd not really on yuji. Also i will defend demon slayer, first michael jackson has been shown and kept as pathetic and the worst. The fight drags out, but you get a reason to want him dead, because he is the worst. And i would say that watered down but his last act reminded me why he is the worst. Also demon slayer did never try to subvert or promised more than being good shounen, and made no pretenses. Througfh i admit the snake pillar really had the author, crap i had so far not that pillar covered, what do i do. Granted its one character so, fine, but that wasnt planned. But its a good wuxia swordsmen fighting vampires series. its not the deepest but enough and upfront earnest. Its a good read and if you dont, you dont, but its a good read.

Dude. Sincerely, thank you for naming In no uncertain terms, why I am just not a big fan of JJK. The writer of the series is just too lazy to develop any of these characters beyond a convenient plot point that might push things forward because of some JuJitsu sorcery they happen to know. Then like you said they kind of just die... I am very much tired of explaining to my friends why I am not all that interested in finishing that series... That being said Maki Zennin is pretty cool and would probably have been a better protagonist for this series!

Dude in Chat was seriously butt-hurt by this take and it was kinda hilarious. I just couldn't stand JJK simply because Itadori was the typical Shonen idiot main character with nothing interesting about him at all. His entire tactic in fights is "I'll just punch harder."

I'm a pretty big fan of JJK and honestly I understand WHY you don't like it, all valid points but I really love the thematic storytelling of it and I get that the Sukuna fight is repetitive but it serves a purpose within the story to wrap up every character's story arcs. I think the real peak of JJK was the Shibuya incident and the real slog was the Culling games besides Maki's mini-arc in the middle of it. I feel like the power-system is the single biggest mis-step in the entire narrative. It needed to be harder and make the limitations/consequences of binding vows be clearer and well defined because it really does feel like an ass pull whenever a new binding vow gets somebody out of a predicament

I remember being 10 or 11 and catching random episodes of bleach on toonami and thinking ichigo was like 25 but then as an adult i went back and watched the show from the beginning and learned that hes supposed to be 15 and i was like HUH

Tyler should read firepunch, its fujimotos work thats pretty good but also out there. If can a bit all over the place, but it has compelling characters and interesting themes. Yep fujimoto is a good interesting creator. And i would say handles it rather mature and surprisingly not edgy but well done, if out there. IDK if tyler ever saw the series lexx, it reminds me a bit off that, unironic great great but , out there. lexx is great scifi if very unique.

OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! It is well drawn, and the Anime is well animated, but the horribly put together jumblemess of a story in the later half makes me want to rip my eyes out. Gojo is a stupid character imo and was handled even worse. It is JoJo's Battles without any of the work that comes from the group solving the puzzle of the battle. Maki's story is pretty cool, wish she was the main female character and had the development at the start of the series but yk we got J.C Penny Sakura with slightly better character development and hammers.

I mean bleack kinda uses fights and zampakto and bankai are used to show the characters personality. Its an expression of the characters in verse. I liked the fullbringer arc bringing him in contact with a group of weird rando haven used all hisa powers and lost them. , and its not with soul society, which is fun, and a great way to actually give time to the fullbringers. Mixed on what happens at the end, but its fun seeing ichigo conflicted hang out with weirdos. Which is fun.

Thank you! I haven’t seen a cast this large and flat since DS. Everyone falls into the same bland stock battle Shonen archetypes and the power system is so complex, yet incredibly vague that I fall asleep whenever anything is explained. DS at least had the benefit of moving at a brake neck pace, but it takes 10 plus episodes for S1 to go anywhere.

Two of my favorite power systems in anime are nen from Hunter x Hunter and the territories from Yu Yi Hakusho. The basic powers in JJK don't beat nen but the domains are basically YYH's territories but expanded on and not dropped after half an arc. I'm really liking the current JJK arc because Gojo looses and we the main characters have to use the weirder powers. The comedy guy you mentioned is great but another part I loved was when the lawyer used his domain to literally put Sukuna on trial to limit his power. Overall JJK feels like it has tried to make characters who only exist to be cool while giving them increasingly wacky powers and I think it's great.

I'm going to be a little more pedantic about the fire arrow because it's literally the only cool application of the power set. The dude spams a shitload of the telekinesis knives, so many that a bunch of shit is reduced to dust and flung everywhere, and it usually makes so much dust that when he does the fire attack it makes a really big dust explosion. Having seen a grain silo explosion before it's neat seeing something like that actually represented in fiction. But this shit fucking blows this manga needs to goddamn end.

The entire extent of my knowledge of JJK is this video and two of Vaush’s videos where he talked about it. Based off of my expert knowledge, I would say that “mid” is being a bit too generous. Manga sounds like asscheeks, but the anime manages to make it serviceable

I was going to start reading JJK after the first season of the anime. But then I read that the author doesn't enjoy writing about the main character anymore and I instantly noped out since I knew everything else would just be a death rattle.

i personally don't get how you find jjk powers boring, like at all, or how the characters are bad. jjk can be awful at fleshing anything out but the ideas that it presents i find rlly interesting also i don't get how gege's writing is jumbled or incoherent (i don't mean i don't think there is, but i can't think of any examples for this)

My problem with JJK has always been that Yuji is insufferably boring. I thought Kubo created the most boring orange-haired inner-demon character (Ichigo/Bleach) but JJK proved me wrong. Every time I complain about Yuji, I have to Google what his name is again, which means something.

I swear JJK character deaths are what happens when the author looks at GOT and said to himself "Nah i'd win" only to kill potentially cool characters in their infancy. Yuki Tsukumo is the embodiment of this, and in terms of cancelled growth nobara is the embodiment of this. Kind of a shame because JJK was the next anime I watched after chainsaw man and CSM handles deaths to perfection!
