Don’t shake Savile’s hand Ron, you don’t know where it’s been😮

I remember Sparks Beat the Clock getting loads of UK radio airplay in 1979.

The horror of Jimmy Savile is such that he obscures the fact that Noel Edmonds looks like a physics teacher who's just back from trainee day at the local hairdressers.

I can't believe I never saw this when it was on. I must have been on holiday, cos this is fab. Sparks, Noel Edmunds, Billy Idol, Amii Stewart & Lorraine Chase...(tacky disco? You gotta love her but just what she was doing in those years when she should have been going to school just beggars me). Russell politely saying they'd been reassessing their future while they'd been away was a shame when really they'd been busy releasing another two of their best albums in that time. 'Big Beat' & 'Introducing Sparks' never got the exposure they deserved. Radio here couldn't cope with a band changing their sound so much. At least they came back to the top 10 with this Moroder collaboration and the UK took proper notice again.

Except they didn't as the subsequent album didn't rise higher than No.73! Despite the fact 2 huge hits were on it, and 'La Dolce Vita' didn't even get a re-release to follow the hits. For me, Sparks became truly great from 1979 onwards; I'm not a great fan of their 70s album.

@@kyachdistent1301 To me, their first albums Sparks (Half nelson) and A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing were excellent, followed by Kimono My House, Propaganda and Indiscreet. Too ahead of their time for some perhaps - they didn't fit in with 'Pop' easily as they are so original. They were a breath of fresh air and still are.

They voted it a miss cos they likely didn't like it. Fair point, and it's fun, but not great at all. And it was only massive as stupid things often are.

If you listen carefully to some of Billy Idol's songs, you can detect some funky and danceable elements. So this is no surprise.

As the legend Jimmy Savile said, "A goodly sound." Savile was the first DJ in the world to use twin turntables for continuous music.

If I had been Jimmy Saville, secretly doing bad things, but otherwise doing a few good things, like clunk click, jim'll fix it and top of the pops, I would want to wake up to myself, and say "I am in danger of throwing it all away".

TV was a bit more "staccato" back then. It was edited "live" (vision-mixed) so there were more vacant pauses and "ums" and "errs" that would be taken out today.
