Minor corrections: The Brother PQ series is primarily cast aluminum like the Juki, but a few of the cosmetic cover panels are plastic. The Brother PQ (and the BabyLock equivalent), Juki TL and Janome HD9 are all basically clones of each other, and really only differ in minor features and included accessories. Also you can get the Janome in black, if you're into that. The Sailrite you mentioned, the LSZ-1, is actually a zig zag walking foot machine. You probably meant the LS-1, which is the straight stitch only version. The walking foot attachment for this machine, like the ones for almost all domestic machines, does not actually pull the fabric from the top. Rather, this style of "walking foot" is designed with a low friction slider that moves with the fabric when the feed dogs in the machine itself do the actual advancing. The mechanism inside of the attachment just resets the slider to the middle between each stitch. The net effect is very similar to using a teflon foot, but slightly more slippery. Technically speaking these straight stitch machines are computerized. There is a microcontroller inside that reads the pedal position and then drives the motor while monitoring the needle position, and it also takes care of operating the thread cutter. However, unlike a fully computerized machine it does not control the feed dogs and obviously there's no zig-zag mechanism for it to control.

Needle threaders on many brands are finneky. I just saw a video about an improved needle threader that worked flawlessly. So, the industry is aware of threaderbissues. I have another pet peeve about my juki 2010: lighting. Needs better lighting over bed of machine and with no glare ring. Ifinally this juki is mechanical. It has buttons. Mechanical buttons vs computerized buttons. I also think many mechanical machines have the metal bobbin cases which the sewer inserts a bobbbin then inserts the filled bobbin case below the needlebed. Like the old fashioned blackhead Singers. The bobbins on mechanicals tend to be metal. Computerized machines generally have plastic drop in bobbins. I gifted a number of mechanical beginner janome machines to some of my students. I chose mechanical because the bobbin system has proven to be reliable after a century of use. You are an easy to listsen to instructor who explains using good grammar, vocabulary demonstrating excellent knowledge of the topic. Thank you.

I bought my Juki 2010Q last August. I have two Brother Machines and a Handi Quilter. I’ve had a Bernina too. I do have a Bernina serger. I love my Juki and have heard that the Brother 1500 is the exact same machine. They came out with a new 1600 now. I sewed on a Singer 345 for years until it died. Love this Juki straight stitch. Your straight stitches are wonderful. You won’t be sorry if you buy it.

I have a Juki TL 18 QVP. It does some additional foot adjustment which I wanted. The one thing I don't like about it is that the knee lift is further to the left (v. their other machines and other brand machines). It is my only quibble. These are brute machines that get the job done with minimal ask. I don't piece with it; however, I love it for binding. Feet sets are inexpensive, and I use the edge stitch feet and the left and right compensating feet. I really like this machine for binding as well as for heavier duty sewing. (P. S. I don't bother with the auto threaders....I just thread them as I still can see!)

Thanks so much for such an in-depth review of this machine!!! I have an older Pfaff plus a Sailrite LSZ that I bought to do cockpit cushions on our boat as well as getting into bag making. However, the Sailrite has some things I intensely dislike so I am looking for a different semi-industrial. I have narrowed it down to the Juki TL2018 (which is really the same exact machine that you just reviewed with the addition of a "microlifter" to raise the pressure foot yet more when needed) or the Janome HD9. So this review was incredibly helpful for me. I really appreciate it!

Oh, how I wish this machine could do a simple zigzag! Other than that, it has everything I need or want...mechanical, a knee control, a down-needle button, a larger throat, etc. But in my quilting, I attach batting to my QAYG pieces with a zigzag stitch so I don't have to mess around with batting tape. It's also great for making frankenbatting. My Janome HD-5000 is sturdy and works for me, but I do wish for just a few of those extra niceties. Since my sewing room has room for only one machine, I guess I'm stuck. But this one is so tempting! Thank you for the thorough review.

You're so right! I got it yesterday, set it up, and have sewn on it for just a few minutes. I figured it how to fit it into my Arrow cabinet (the Kangaroo) so I don't even have to buy a special insert. Love, love, love it!

@@catstitchstudio I have our 3rd bedroom for my "stuff" which includes my sewing, TV, small easy chair, and small desk for bills, so you can imagine it is tight. However, my husband took off the closet doors and I put my second machine in there, surrounded by shelving. It is tight and does not have a very large table, but it works! He was able to pull power from the hall plug-in through the wall so I have power right there. Just an idea.

Thank you and, yes, do show him! There are no machines that I know of that have the deep throat space and straight stitch that are less expensive than the Juki 2010. If you are not interested in quilting, you can go with a less expensive model that does not have the deeper throat space. We are not machine dealers, so I recommend that you look around to see if there is one that will better meet your needs. I do highly recommend the Juki brand, though. My second favorite brand is Janome. Hope that helps. ~Deborah

Hi Mary, The push button thing is to quick change the presser foot. There is a link for this item in the video description. If you are planning on using the push button thing on a different machine, be sure it is a high shank machine. This push button gadget will only work on high shank machines. ~Deborah

Great question! I do my own maintenance on my mechanical machines, so I can tell you that if you follow the manual, and clean and oil regularly, you should not have any issues. The oiling is super easy and I do it every time I clean my machine (about once a month), but I sew heavily every day. The machine has little holes in the casing where you just drop in a couple of drops from time to time. The manual is good at showing you where those are. Thanks! ~Deborah

Yes. Be sure you use the correct needle, but it sews through thickness with ease. The deeper throat is a bonus when sewing things like cushion covers and quilts, as well. Thanks for watching! ~Deborah

Can you quilt freehand on the Juki without a regulator? Can you use the acrylic stitching guides I see quilters use? I would live to buy this machine..don't know if it ever goes on sale or not Thanks for filming this, it was so helpful.

Yes, you can quilt without a regulator. The regulator helps keep the stitches even. Stitching without one takes a lot of practice. Go slow and steady and you can do it. You can definitely use the acrylic rulers for quilting. A word of caution: Don't buy rotary rulers thinking they are the same thing. Rulers made for quilting as a guide are ¼" thick (or more), rulers made for rotary cutting are ⅛" thick. If you try to use a rotary ruler, you risk running over the ruler and breaking the ruler, needle, or the machine timing. I have not ever seen this machine on a sale. I can say it is a good machine for the MSRP. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!! ~Deborah

Thanks for this video, and it was a great thorough review :) I just got this machine, it's still in the box... I like the Teflon foot suggestion, since you can't move the needle in other positions, can you get one that's a 1/4" foot? The one that you show that comes with the machine, has the piece of metal as the guide, I don't care for that kind, I'd rather use the edge of the foot to sew the 1/4". I notice that you do use the diagonal seam tape to mark the 1/4", I'm assuming that's what you do to piece for quilting. I jumped around the video a bit, so I apologize if you covered that and I missed it.

The teflon foot (see the video description for the link) is ¼" at the edge, so I use that for everything quilting related that requires that seam allowance. I use the diagonal seam tape (link also in the description) for doing flying geese and those types of things that require sewing from point to point. I use the red line in the middle more than the black ¼" line on the sides. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! ~Deborah

I've referred back to the video several times to find where you show threading, etc. If I remember correctly, you had mentioned maintaining your machine & even opening. Could you possibly do a video on cleaning & oiling your machine / show how to open it up & clean?? That would be awesome! Thanks again...

Thanks for your info for Juki TL2010Q. I'm ready to purchase it through the link you gave on Amazon, but it says the machine weights 1 lb only. That can't be right? Please verify the correct machine/link to purchase as some of the Juki TL2010Q are sold by a few different sellers and with different weight variations , METAL or ALUMINUM, and they don't give any detail as to what accessories included. Help ;)

Hi! Nice review! Can you help? I want semi indistrial or industrial machine, but im a beginner kind of with big ambiotions and intentions to make backpack, bags, pouches from different material like linen, cotton, vynil, nailon, polyester mostly and with different filling. I tried it in the shop a bit, and i liked it. But perfect would be some unison walking foot. But i dont have money yet 2500€ to buy amth like industrial juki or even a place for such a noisy machine. What you would recomend me?

This machine would be an excellent machine to start with. After this machine, if you really want to go to an industrial, I would recommend the Juki-1181N as an industrial for you. I love mine!

Well, I have never owned the Brother 1500SL, so I cannot speak to that one, but the Juki's are virtually identical. For the difference in price, I would get the TL 2010.

If you are quilting with a regulator (highly recommended when doing free motion), you need to make sure the machine you are buying will work with the regulator. If you are not using a regulator, a lower priced machine would be more of a consideration. A regulator is a unit you attach to the machine that keeps your stitches looking even. I really enjoyed the video! 😀 If I may ask 3 quick questions: I'll need a machine only for topstitches(?) it's a decorative seam which will also close the opening after turning. Is it hard/easy to do the lockstitches? My "normal" machine does it automatically and I've never done it myself and they'll need to look good bc it's on the top. Can I do a color change like with overlock machines, so knoting one thread to the next one? I have to do a lot of color changes and threading the machine each time would become tedious I think. And at last: I often have to shorten the last stitch before a corner but sometimes I only see it when I've gone to far, so can you go "one stitch back"? Thank you in advance!

Great questions! Lockstitches are done with the lever on the bottom right of the machine and are very easy to accomplish. Color changes can be done by knotting one thread to the next one, provided the eye of the needle you are using is large enough. I would not really recommend it, as the eye would need to be considerably larger and then it would probably not be the correct size for the thread you were using. I am not sure. You would have to try that out on your own. I manually change my thread multiple times a day, sometimes, and it is a really simple process for me. Finally, backing out of a stitch can be done, but if you have gone that extra stitch and the needle has come back to the up position, then the stitch is made and there is no backing out of it at that point. I hope that makes sense. Overall, I love this machine for top/edge stitching, but the things you mention seem like they could be better accomplished with different machines. I would recommend that you find a dealer, if possible, and test drive this machine to see if it will do what you want it to do. Thanks for watching and for the questions! ~Deborah

Maybe was wrong tension on foot while needle broke or wrong needle? Because i saw people sewing more fabric in it.

If you are referring to the needle that broke on the denim, you are correct. I was using a standard needle, not a needle meant for denim. Can you believe it still stitched through that many layers with just a standard needle. Nice!

Great video ❤❤❤ I do bag making and I'm looking to upgrade from my Juki DX7 Would this machine or the new Juki Sumato machine be a good choice. I sew denim and mid weight canvas and would like to start sewing with leather, fake leathers and vinyls.

Good question! For your application, this machine would be a wonderful upgrade to the DX7. I had that machine and it really was a gread machine for all purpose sewing. The housing on the DX7 is plastic and the 2010Q is metal. If you can keep the DX7 for those times when you need to do zig-zag, or buttonholes, I might keep it. For me, I sold my DX7 and went with a much cheaper Janome for those stitches that I need on occasion. The only thing I really miss about the DX7 is the auto buttonhole feature. That was a dream. The 2010Q will sew all the materials you mentioned and more. I have never used a Sumato, but it looks to me like it is an updated version of the 2010Q. I cannot speak to it's durability, but since it is a Juki, it should be fabulous, too. Hope that helps! ~Deborah

Question: I’m thinking of getting this machine but was wondering more about the upper threading. It was hard to see on the video, but it looks like you have to thread through 3 small holes (tension discs?)? That seems like a drag. Is it?

The three holes at the top are actually a thread guide. I have seen people only thread through one or two of the holes. It only really becomes something to use when using different weights of thread, such as threads for leather or denim, etc. This machine has the one tension disk at the top, which is also for use when you need more fine control of a particular thread. The main tension disk is the same as all other machines and is really the only one that you need to be sure to use when doing all purpose sewing. I hope that helps some. ~Deborah

HiLuv, I have a question. From your experience with this model, would it be good for sewing on paper/light cardboard? In other words for bookbinding? Any thoughts would help. Thanks so much

Interesting question. I believe it would be great for that application. The foot lifts higher than a domestic machine, so you can get thicker things under the needle easier. And, it sews through many layers of denim, so with the right needle for your application, I think it would work really well for that process. ~Deborah

What about vinyl and cork ? I sew on vinyl a lot, threw 4-5 layers on my OLD Singer500. Can this Juki do that? Thank you

Absolutely! When I sew on clear vinyl I usually tape a piece of paper to the bed of the machine to keep the vinyl from "sticking" to the machine. The machine itself can handle vinyl and cork beautifully. Thanks for watching and for asking! ~Deborah

Our local sewing machine store carries this machine so I will be able to purchase locally unless he has the price to high. It was a good and informative video

Yes, the DDL8700 is a few dollars cheaper, but it is not as compact a machine. Many home sewists do not have the room for the larger industrial machine. Additionally, the DDL8700 does not allow for free motion quilting, as the Juki TL-2010Q does. ~Deborah
