Great walk-through of a great version of this track. I'd like to see more on how you made the strumming effect on the guitar - it's really authentic-sounding, especially given the quality of the sample :-)
It does. But I really prefer to have each instrument on its own channel. Also Program changes don't work in Combinations which is where I prepare those multi setups. Because it's easier to save them.
@@JayBmusic ah thanks for clarifying. Btw. I'm not aware of the term 'Combinations' , are they channel-specific presets for keyboardsplits/fx sends e.g.?
Combinations are Korg's term for a set of program patches arranged in layers, split zones, arpeggistor zones etc.. On Yamaha they're called Performances. Dunno about other brands. On the Kross these can be up to 16 layers - and you can also address each layer on a different midi channel if you like. In this case it's pretty much a multi timbral instrument, except you have to set them program patches themselves on the synth or via the editor instead of using program changes, because program changes in Combi mode cause switching through the combination patches.
Wow, this is quite well done! I'm always blown away by just how much you can squeeze simultaneously out of these workstations. Curious, how did you achieve the "video playing on LCD" effect in the beginning of the clip? (Speaking of workstations...I just picked up an S90ES a little while back - thanks so much for your impressive soundset! I've been thoroughly enjoying both it and the synth :)
CompuCat It's a chain of desaturation, recoloration, threshold and mosaic effect. Also congrats on the purchase! The S90ES might not be a workstation but it's still the most powerful synth in my setup.
Aha, that's how you're doing it! Makes sense. Also, thanks! Yeah, it might not technically be a workstation.....but that glorious S700 piano sample more than makes up for it IMO. It's just soooooo pretty to play :)
JayB how did you do it? What’s it called? Was it a simulated screen as it’s done in commercials? Lol Also, thanks for choosing to do this song. What made you choose this song? In my opinion, the instrumentation is amazingly done. I love the tone of the song. It’s a current mood I like to stay in. But when it comes to the lyrics... they are meh :-/ I wrote to Julia on IG asking if she can compose new lyrics for the song or an alternate version (I think that sounds better) haha The last chorus of this song (the instrumentation) reminds me a lot of Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy the Silence’ What’s the genre of these type of songs? Does it have to do anything with the key of the song? I’d like to find more. I actually call them ‘ballads’ but I could be wrong... It’s like sad but not sad, don’t know the word to describe it, lol. It makes me think about life or wonder about it. I feel like I’m somewhere else. It makes me feel some type of way for sure. Here’s a song that I think has the same ‘tone’ Dj snake - Let me love you
Looks like you are playing this via your DAW software on your Mac. Is the Korg Kross 2 capable of playing the entire arrangement direct from its sequencer? Sorry if this is a newbie question.
@@JayBmusic Yo man that is awesome! I listen to it on my Kross 2 and it sounds great! Excellent work on the arrangement! Have been jamming with the combis you made, great for inspiration.
As some one who owns a Yamaha S90ES: Yamaha would win this with ease. Far more and higher quality insert and master effects, better samples, integrated mastering effect...
That almost makes me wonder...since both the Kross and S90ES have onboard sequencer playback, I bet you could sync one to the other for DAWless playback of 32 MIDI channels. Might be able to finish the entire song that way...?
@@compucat In theory that would be possible. But as soon as I have two it loses its challenge. Because when I have two, I can also have three and four. ;) But if I really did a combination of Kross and S90ES I'd definitely move all the guitars and the E Piano to the S90 ES which would give me more tracks on the Kross. However, the synth sounds work great on both devices. Only the drums would stay on the Kross because its samples are, like, 13 years younger.
