"The community has amazing taste," says Julianne Moore of May December's (entirely unofficial) tagline, as Natalie Portman gushes: "That's my dream, that's my goal." Here, the Oscar-winners and co-star Charles Melton chat to Attitude about balancing campiness with queerness - and some very sensitive subjects.

Julianne Moore is also starring opposite Nicholas Galitzine so that’s another festive season for some of us 🌈

I struggle to understand how a film about CSA and grooming has been dubbed as “Gay Christmas”. If it’s as the interviewer stated and it’s because Portman and Moore are in the film and beloved by the gays I totally get that. But it just seems odd to describe it in that fashion and seems incredibly tone deaf if it’s for any other reason. I say this because I’ve seen people (ffs Netflix’s official account) sexualizing Melton’s character in the film, when he’s literally … a victim of abuse. I just genuinely think that there are certain ways to approach films with this subject matter, and it’s been done so in a distasteful manner at times. Even Todd Haynes himself was vehemently against the the usage of the word “camp” to describe this film. I think the word has lost its original meaning and has become more of a colloquial term to mean something a bit jarring and confusing rather than what it actually means, because camp would be the farthest from what I would describe this film as. This interviewer did a great job nonetheless.

The interviewer literally says it’s being called “Gay Christmas” because it starts two actresses gays like. Not every gay person probably likes them obviously, but it’s a movie I’ve seen many people of the lgbt community take a really strong love and enthusiasm for.

@@desiree9301 And that’s absolutely fine. I clearly stated: “If it’s as the interviewer stated and it’s because Portman and Moore are in the film and beloved by the gays I totally get that.” My problem is with the way people have been describing a film about such dark themes such as CSA with terms that make it seem like the film is some exciting rom-com. I don’t get that at all. Like did we watch the same film? This is what I’m critiquing.
