In Home, the number one New York Times international bestseller, Julie Andrews recounted her difficult childhood and her emergence as an acclaimed singer and performer on the stage.
With this second memoir, Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years, Andrews picks up the story with her arrival in Hollywood and her phenomenal rise to fame in her earliest films--Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Andrews describes her years in the film industry -- from the incredible highs to the challenging lows. Not only does she discuss her work in now-classic films and her collaborations with giants of cinema and television, she also unveils her personal story of adjusting to a new and often daunting world, dealing with the demands of unimaginable success, being a new mother, the end of her first marriage, embracing two stepchildren, adopting two more children, and falling in love with the brilliant and mercurial Blake Edwards. The pair worked together in numerous films, including Victor/Victoria, the gender-bending comedy that garnered multiple Oscar nominations.
Cowritten with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, and told with Andrews's trademark charm and candor, Home Work takes us on a rare and intimate journey into an extraordinary life that is funny, heartrending, and inspiring.

This woman is an inspiration... and 'her eyes as blue as the azure sky, has the depth of the deepest ocean, has warmth and love enough to heal the whole world'....I have read her memoirs but listening it from her makes me realize even more that she has lead such a tough life but with supreme dignity and grace...always taking care of others...always there for others ...she is the epitome of optimism, hope and everything positive even when she was fighting her own battles personally, she always gave the world so much joy and happiness. Dame Julie says she is lucky but I say that in fact, it is us who are lucky to have lived during the times of Dame Julie Andrews.... I hope she received all the love that she deserved...much more love and good health to her..love always ❤️ ❤️

She is truly a classy lady - been my favourite for so many years. I just love how she includes the audience into her space from the moment she arrives to when she gives her answers, always looking at them, smiling & laughing with open arm gestures with them rather than only just looking & answering the interviewer. It's a welcoming & polite gesture she's had throughout her career & one that makes her so endearing to those who are in the audience.

I thoroughly recommend this interview! I have to disagree with many of the commenters who carp about Eric interrupting. Julie Andrews has been around for so long, and been interviewed so many times, that if you watch many of her interviews she has the tendency to tell the same stories again and again. He very carefully - and relatively gently(!) - tries to stop that tendency, and pursue other avenues of discussion. This interview has her open up about things in her life I have never heard her talk about, and he is to be applauded for that!
@joyk2327
@joyk2327 3 года назад
@Jonathan Haye It is true. Julie is not exactly someone with an adventurous spirit or very open. She likes to step on solid ground, what she knows, is her natural tendency. And in interviews, she talks about what she's willing to give, and she's a very private person, so if it were up to her, she wouldn't give much. Even Emma said in an interview that there were struggles when writing the book, and that she insisted that she be honest when writing it. Julie's tendency is to soften her experiences (probably as an emotional defense mechanism). I remember her ex Tony Walton, saying that things at Julie's house were terrible (during her teenage years), but she wrote things like: "my magical family" in her diary. I think the interviewer was trying to get her out of her comfort zone, to break her "protective shell", as Blake Edwards once said.

Lovely Julie Andrews' attitude and manner remind me of my late mum and dad's outlook on life (both born around the same time as Julie). Julie's mother's advice to just get on with it may appear harsh to young people of today, but it wasn't meant to hurt; Julie had a difficult homelife, but she still referred to her mother as, "my wonderful mother." Later, she sought help, in order to understand, accept and overcome events in her life. As a teenager, if I overstepped the mark and got a bit uppity with my parents, my dad (a hard-working, no-nonsense coal miner) used to bring me back down to earth, saying, "I'll just say this! No one is better than you, madam, but YOU are no better than anyone else...so think on!" Bluntly said, but it worked! My parents' background was different to Julie's, but, like her, they went through hard times as youngsters during 6 years of war and 14 years of food rationing. Julie is a product of her time; I love listening to her speak; her lovely smile is never far away, and her resilience and gratitude for all the blessings she has in life is inspirational (as were my parents).

Beautiful grand old theatre in downtown Los Angeles, full of Dame Julie super-fans. I was 3rd row back in the center! When she came onstage I nearly hyperventilated! But...the interviewer clearly hadn't done her homework and asked the same old questions we dedicated fans had heard over and over again. Interesting that Emma's last name is Hamilton and Julie's very dear friend Carol Burnett had 3 daughters whose father was last name was Hamilton.

If he had watched even ONE interview she had done previously, he would have known the very well-known story about Julie's career where she is passed over for My Fair Lady in order to do Mary Poppins-- NOT The Sound of Music-- what a clunker, the subject can immediately tell the interviewer has not done his 'HOMEWORK'. He should just get out of the way and let her talk. I'm afraid to watch him for the rest of this.... as Julie's country-people would say-- 'cringe-making'.

Dame Julie may be 84-years old, but I don't have to believe it if I don't want to.

She was born in England but Her Dad and Mother are English, she grew up in L.A.; Gstaad Switzerland, London and New York. But I think she has English and American Citizenship.

Eric, STOP interrupting. You're there to prompt the interviewee to make it about them. Not do all the talking and make it about you.

Great woman, Julie Andrews, but the host or the anchor of the talk is so stiff without any spark or humor in his speech and very abrupt in connecting the different sections of the dialogue.
