Tha Mo Ghaol Air Àird a' Chuan (English title "My Love Is On The High Seas") is a traditional Scots Gaelic song performed by Julie Fowlis from North Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland. (English translation of lyrics below.)
The song features on Julie's debut album "Mar A Tha Mo Chridhe (As My Heart Is)" released on Spit & Polish, distributed by Cadiz Music.
It features in a trailer for the Disney Pixar animated movie "Brave" which is set in the ancient highlands of Scotland with characters voiced by Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Craig Ferguson, Kevin McKidd and Robbie Coltrane.
A TV spot for Brave featuring "My Love Is On The High Seas" was broadcast during an ad break in the US Oscars ceremony in Feb 2012 with a viewing audience of over 38 million.
Julie Fowlis also sings two songs - in English - in the soundtrack to Brave; "Touch The Sky" and "Into The Open Air".
English Translation:
On a quiet evening at the beginning of May
When the bat was in the skies
I heard a tearful young maiden
Singing beneath the shadow of the green branches
The sun was setting in the sea
And no stars yet graced the sky
When the young girl sang sorrowfully
"My love is on the high seas"
The night's dew began to fall
Each bloom yielding softly to the droplets
The wind blew in a fragrant breeze
Bringing life and renewal to each field
The girl tunefully sang her song
Quiet and peaceful like the June dew
And this chorus constantly repeated
"My love is on the high seas"
Day darkened and the stars shone
Setting their course amongst the clouds
The maiden sat, burdened by her sadness
Her singing could not have been more soothing
I moved closer to the young woman
Singing of her love sailing on the sea
Oh sweet was her sad lament
"My love is on the high seas"
The music enticed me
Nearer to the brown-haired maiden of the warm eyes
And she prayed to the King of Heaven
"Protect my love on the high seas"
Her heart was breaking with love
When I took her by the hand
"Wipe your eyes, your love is safe
I have returned to you from the high seas"
This video was made by Forest Of Black in Glasgow, Scotland.

I have always had this love for the Gaelic language and culture "despite" being Swedish. It is an interest i guess. The Fowlis / Foulis (if i´m not misinformed) are a sept of the Munro clan, known as "The Invincibles" in Sweden in the 1700s (when they where often officers in the Swedish army). She is bewitching, talented, beautiful and just generally brings forth a warm love for what she is doing, a warmth i luckily have no defence against.

Listening to an ancestral language will spark a resonance, even if we dont understand it on a concious level.. Scots Gaelic is like that for me, as is Old English.. Then again.. with a girl as beautiful as this, and how she sings.... how could it not touch the heart?

Nice to hear the old language is becoming in vogue again , thanks to Julie and many others. Oh, and don't let anyone tell you it's a peripheral language only ever confined to the Highlands - a simple glance at the place names on Google maps should suffice. My family name hails from the southern lowlands - Balmaclellan Scottish Gaelic: Baile MhicIllFhaolain ( son of a servant or follower of Saint Fillan.) , meaning town of the MacLellans.

Need to teach the old language in schools more, give us a bit of pride in ourselves again! Always found Gaelic a fascinating language :) my family name in Gaelic is MacgilleEthain which means son of the servant of Saint John. Come from a very proud clan that can trace its roots all the way back to the dark ages and the Dalraidic migrations :)

Amen to that!!! F*** Spanish!!! If I want to learn a language, I would want to learn what my ancestors spoke. Which would be Irish-Gaelic & German.

The death of the clan system was the thinking that the land belonged to the chiefs. That more than any other factor, the conquest by the English, or the over-population led to its demise.

Beautifully sung :) This was not originally a Gaelic song. It was composed by Bernard Covert in America sometime before 1850 under the title "Jamie's On The Stormy Seas." (Google New England Music Scrapbook) It was translated into Gaelic by Henry Whyte of Easdale, Argyll and arrived in Canada in the "St Columba Collection of Gaelic Songs."

Which some might not see it that way, but is actually better, as it shows Gaelic as a living, learning culture and language, ready to learn of foreign examples, and not som artifact from a museum.

im irish, grandma came over to the usa, and life goes on. first off i love women singers im spell bound by the tone ( nature im sure has something to do with this ) but add the accent. and im hooked. even tho growing up with all the women in the family having red hair. i sure i know where i get my stubbornness from. much love from the usa. grew up in oregon, now im in desert because doctors said be good for my health. sure the heat helps with chronic pain. but i sure miss the green, and grabbing my guitar and going for a walk into the woods and just losing my self. should of stayed. i probably be much healthier. but life is but luck to be here, so i cherish what i do have best i can even tho iv been through hell. keep singing, i need translations but even with out i still can make up what i think the song is about by the emotion, and that is good too. creative, one thing schools have done good to get rid of slowly, budget cuts etc... is the excuse. i say its to keep people from dreaming. rock on. chris,

Fionn took the tune from "Jamie's on the Stormy Sea" by Bernard Covert, an American composer. So it was composed on the piano (he was an accompanist as well). There are also suggestions that Covert took it from a pipe tune.

Then it's a hobby to us that still like the beauty of the language and the history of it's people :) I mean it dosnt have to define it, but my friend in Itay says Italians speak Italian, not Latin; they have lost a certain amount of pride in being Roman bcs that culture died as the language changed and left.
@RestingScotFace
@RestingScotFace 10 лет назад
At the analytic level your exactly right, but to say that is all language is is a very objective way to look at it. Rhetoric is more than just the symbolic words that come out of your mouth. If you don't think speaking Gaelic wont make you lose anything, then by all means don't speak it lol
