Julien Donkey-Boy - Authenticity On The Fringe:
Ending our month on cult trash cinema, we're delving into Harmony Korine's underrated follow-up to his polarising classic Gummo, the Dogma 95 film Julien Donkey-Boy. Trauma, grief, dehumanisation, and the inability to adapt, Julien Donkey-Boy focuses on Julien, a young man with schizophrenia, and his family, living on the edge of American society where psychiatric support and opportunity is unavailable. While a bleak film, Julien Donkey-Boy is a source of empathy, sympathy, and humanity towards people that are left to fend for themselves.

How do you feel about Julien Donkey-Boy? How would you compare it to both Harmony Korine's other films, as well as other works that fall under the Dogme 95 "vow of chastity"? Which films would you recommend similar to Julien Donkey-Boy? Thanks for watching!

Julien Donkey-Boy and Gummo feel so much like stories you can find in my American towns. I feel like many movies try to show America through its major cities and small towns as either pristine places or just a bit run down. Yeah there are places like that but there are so many towns and cities that run down and are grimy and pretty much forgotten. My birth state might have cities growing again but go outside those cities and it just feels like time and money forgot these places exist. Harmony Korine excels at capturing those places, excels at showing that all too common side of America. There are a bunch of other shows and movies that do that incredibly well like Moonlight, Shameless, Oh Brother Where Art Though, Bottle Rocket, heck the 1985 Death of a Salesman does it well. Rockstar's Bully is probably the closest I've seen a game capture that feeling. Korine just has a way of making it feel so real. I haven't seen the movie in a long time and I kinda want to rewatch Gummo more but I'll definitely watch one if I see the other.

I really admire Harmony Korine for showing a side of America we rarely see in cinema (and while I know it's specific to America, I can recognise areas in the UK similar to what he depicts in his films too, especially after a throtting of public services by 14 years of Tory rule). I see what you mean in comparing Korine to Moonlight and Rockstar's Bully too - I'll need to rewatch Bottle Rocket sometime, and I've only ever read Death Of A Salesman so the 1985 adaptation will be added to my watchlist. I think Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy would make a great double-bill - I may rewatch Gummo now after recently rewatching this one. 😁

This might be my favourite Korine film… either this or Gummo, but I also do love The Beach Bum and Trash Humpers. If you haven’t seen it, here’s a reference to Julien Donkey-Boy in SpongeBob: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QG4-xPRrxxw.htmlsi=RBItp2pmDOrR_2de Oh, and I chose Valentino for my BFI order! Bait, Belly of an Architect and Valentino were my choices

I still need to see Trash Humpers, but I really enjoyed The Beach Bum too! Holy crap I love that Spongebob has a reference like this in it, I'm not sure how many viewers would've picked up on that! 🤯 Ooh nice choices! Looking forward to hearing what you think about them! 😁

Sorry, just also wanted to add a quick shout-out to the 2011 Ari Aster short "The Strange Thing About The Johnsons" as a very disturbing and (to me) highly authentic portrayal of incestuous abuse within a family.

That's a good recommendation, no need to apologise! I always felt The Strange Thing About The Johnsons, while disturbing, had a lacing of dark satire to it, as if the film is intent on confronting our assumptions of the connection between abuser and victim. I'd like to do a video on it at some point in the future, I personally see a dark humour laced in each of Ari Aster's films and it's be interesting to discuss that. Thank you for your comments btw! 😊🙏

@@YouHaveBeenWatchingFilms You're very welcome, I'm enjoying the video material you make very much. I have a blog on film criticism and I recognize when someone is really doing the research and putting an effort into it. Keep it up, I think it's fantastic stuff!

I feel that authenticity comes from the writer/filmmaker's sincerity towards the subject matter of the film. This authenticity is something the viewer can feel from the treatment of the characters and story and is in no way dependent on the techniques used. The emphasis on which materials are used for filmaking is simply a Dogmetic insistence on externalities not the sincerity of intent. If we look at a pretty mid-to-high budget film like Monkey Man, it obviously breaks all of the Dogme rules. But does that make it inauthentic or insincere? Certainly not. This is clearly true for many other higher budget productions. Meanwhile a lower-budget filmmaker like Sean Baker breaks some rules - nice cinematrography and lighting, for instance - but not others. And his work is incredibly authentic IMO. Finally something like Lynch's Inland Empire is almost completely similar to a Dogme film but is not trying to adhere to any school or doctrine. It's extremely authentic despite its fantastic nature and made all the more so by not trumpeting that it is in a movement.

Completely agree with you, I believe films can be authentic even if they don't follow the stringent rules of Dogme 95, but I felt like I needed to outline the rules of the movement and the intent suggested by Von Trier and Vinterberg before delving further into this film. The majority of Julien Donkey-Boy's authenticity feels so personal to Korine due to his Uncle Eddy.

I hadn't heard of Three Godless Years before so I'll seek it out, thank you for the suggestion! All of the themes I do on the channel are chosen by Patreon supporters, but if I can grab a copy of this film I'll bring it up in the next Patreon poll. 🙂

You lost me at "unlike his previous film GUMMO, you sympathize with the characters..." I love the characters in GUMMO, but JDB feels like a joke at the expense of the actors and the audience. I don't see any real characters, just a director trying to course-correct his career which starts w the controversial KIDS but "uh-oh GUMMO was successful I need my street cred so let's get back to controversy while still strategically aligning me w a trendy film movement and an auteurist director." JDB is a meaningless provocation at the expense of the disabled, craven careerism part and parcel with his idol Von Trier's THE IDIOTS.

Completely fair criticisms, and I appreciate hearing this perspective too; you're not alone here - quite a lot of film critics at the time felt the same way about Julien Donkey-Boy as you do here. I probably should've rephrased my consideration of Gummo in this video, because I also remember sympathising with Chloë Sevigny's experience, as well as the teenage girl who discovers she has breast cancer, and while writing this video I was certainly thinking more along the lines of the actions Gummo portrays which I don't personally sympathise with (the animal cruelty especially), but I also think that Gummo doesn't have the sensitivity that Julien Donkey-Boy has. Thank you for this comment though, I always appreciate thoughtful discourse like this and it's totally cool if we still disagree here. 🙏
