Fact: Dr Flip Homansky (the ring side Dr) stated after the fight that M.T had a fractured orbital bone, swallowed large amounts of his own blood, suffered short term memory loss and was urinating PURE blood. When a fighter is asked a question especially more than once and cannot answer the referee, he has NO choice but to stop the fight. Richard Steele did what was right. Yes it sucks for M.T but he had his chance in a rematch and got KTFO in 8 rounds. End of story
@TheRexrapper
@TheRexrapper 8 лет назад
+18isActually 9 Taylor was never the same after that fight. I think Taylor not answering had a lot to do with his trainer jumping on the ring apron like an idiot and Taylor was looking in his direction.
@havrisen6620
@havrisen6620 5 лет назад
Taylor said he was looking in that direction “for help”. Taylor also said Steele didn’t even give him a count or ask him questions. The truth is Taylor was knocked the fuck out on his feet. Had it not been for the ropes to pull himself up, the ring post to stop him from falling backwards as he clearly does, and then grabbing the ropes again with both gloves to keep himself upright (Taylor even admitted he was holding them for “support”), then Taylor doesn’t even beat the count. What the camera doesn’t show in the aftermath of this fight is Chavez being hoisted up on his late brother’s shoulders getting a victory ride as he’s pumping his fists, Duva chasing Steele around the ring, and as this is all going on Taylor still remains in the corner, still holding the ropes and not letting go. He was frozen like a deer in headlights. George Benton had to literally pry Taylor’s hands lose. It took 3 men (Duva, Benton, and Homanski) to escort Taylor back to his corner. I’ve met Homansky and I asked him about this fight. He told me Taylor didn’t know why Steele stopped the fight because he thought he had just “lost my balance”. Taylor didn’t even remember getting hit or remember a count or Steele saying anything to him. A clear sign of a concussion. He told me they also took CAT scans of Taylor’s brain and that there was swelling of the brain. He told me Taylor’s kidneys were failing him and had he not gone to the ER immediately after the fight he would’ve died in his sleep that night. He said Taylor should’ve never fought another day in his life. He also said that Taylor’s injuries were more consistent of that for a car crash victim, not a boxer. These are strong words coming from the doctor. How ignorant do people have to be to criticize Steele having to stop the fight.

Chavez just had too much heart. He never quit, he kept coming forward the whole time. Some biased people complain on how the fight should have not been stopped, but its very clear it was a good stoppage. If a guy is hanging on to the ropes the whole time he is up and doesnt respond back to the referee, the fight needs to be stopped. Also, Chavez erased all the doubts when he defeated Taylor in the rematch in the 8th round by TKO. So for all the biased people, stop crying, and just accept it.

A rematch? What? The first match was in 1990, and Chavez and the next time Chavez fought someone on the P4P list was 1993, and got hit 90 more times by Pernell Whitaker, which I predicted - Chavez even had his 145 catch-weight.
@user-vj1pq6uz8m
@user-vj1pq6uz8m 7 лет назад
Don't rewrite history, Meldrick went on to do what Chavez could not do, as it didn't look good for Chavez fighting guys 5-2 and 4-3-1 while Taylor went to welterweight and fought the WBA champion 32-0 Aaron Davis (who just knocked out champ Mark Brehland) Meldrick looked great winning easily, and was P4P 5 and ranked best Welterweight in the world, as He called out Chavez who said he was going to , and look it up, go up to challenge Meldrick for his welterweight title, he never did. Meldrick went for greatness, he defended vs 22-0 Garcia, 34-2 Glenwood Brown and by January 1992 was 29-1-1 2 division champ and the P4P listing he was 5, at 3 was WBC Jr middle champ Terry Norris, (Chavez was 1 and Pernell was 2, but Chavez was the one not fighting anyone of any merit) So Meldrick Taylor moved up to Jr Middleweight, and challenged Terry Norris for his title and Meldrick won a gold as a featherweight. He would get stopped in the 4th, and then go back down to 147 and defend his welterweight title vs 27-0 Espana who stopped Meldrick and after two consecutive stoppages by Halloween 1992 he retired. Then Don King came to him and offered him a lot of money to fight 3 bums and work his weight down from over 150 to 140, as he should not have even been in a ring in 1994 and look at the scorecards, one judge had it even - and you never heard shit from Chavez after that (when Randall beat and dropped him and 2 points were deducted from Chavez he lost a SD and Chavez never wanted Meldrick or Pernell remetches, and he quit vs Randall in their 2nd fight and won a Split Tech Decision, BS. Then that 1994 BS fight vs Meldrick whose last time at 140 was 4 years earlier. Chavez shows up in 1996 as WBC champion 96-1-1 and talked smack and could not go 4 rounds with Oscar. Then he shows up in 1998 at 100-2-2 and quits. Then he would lose to Willy Wise and Kostya
@user-vj1pq6uz8m
@user-vj1pq6uz8m 7 лет назад
Chavez had no heart. The first title holder he beat he was 56-0, never unified a division, ran from Whitaker at lightweight, which is why he dropped two belts and moved to 140 to challenge Roger who he already knocked out at Jr Light with at over 40-0, he never went near Camacho at Jr Light, either (Don't get confused,the last year Camacho was on a P4P list was 1986, Chavez fought him after he lost in late 1992 and no one cared) SO CHAVEZ VS P4P boxers - 1990, Meldrick (Controversial, and the reason Steele went on leave a year later add in Chavez named Jose Sulliman Jr's Godfather and called Don King his dad) 3 years later he blatantly lost to Pernell getting hit 90 more times, 1996 he couldn't go 4 rounds with Oscar, and then it just got worse. TOO MUCH HEART? IF MELDRICK RAN THE LAST ROUND YOU"D BE CALLING HIM A BITCH, he stood toe to toe with Chavez who never knocked him out and Steele made the quickest stoppage, seeing the opportunity, Meldirck went on to be Welterweight Champ, a title Chavez never got from being outboxed and quitting on his stool
@user-vj1pq6uz8m
@user-vj1pq6uz8m 7 лет назад
You are being biased if you take anything from "Legendary Nights" ----Meldrick's camp protested Richard Steele being involved - and look what happened. A year later Steele was suspended and Chavez' IBF title taken as he only had WBC title (he named President of WBC Jose Sulliman as his son's Godfather, called King his dad, Flip Homansky, Bob Lee Sr of IBF who went to prison for taking bribes from King) You're telling me you trust the scorecards, too? One judge had Chavez winning? LOL --- And Chavez did not want a rematch, in fact, after Chavez at 69-0 fought a guy who was 5 wins, 3 losses, then a guy 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 Draw (THE OBVIOUS SITUATION WAS A REMATCH ON PAY PER VIEW, and then at P4P 2 was Pernell who Chavez ran from at Lightweight to go to Jr welter to rematch Roger who he KO'd in the 2nd) Meldrick Taylor two fights later did what Chavez never would, win a welterweight title. Meldrick had too much heart, while Chavez fought no one running up his record, Meldrick beat 32-0 WBA Welterweight Champ Aaron Daivis (who just KO'd Mark Brehland) and Meldrick easily won. Then Meldrick defended his title vs 22-0 Luis Garcia, and won. And then by January 1991 Meldrick sucessfully defended a 3rd time beating 34-2 Glenwood Brown --- It would not be till 3 years later when Chavez would fight Pernell (for 3 YEARS CHAVEZ FOUGHT NO ONE - please save face and dont' say anyone cared about Camacho who was shot since 1986 and already lost, or that anyone cared about 4 loss Greg Haugen, Pernelll took Haugen's lightweight title and this was at 140 years later) LOOK AT CHAVEZ VS P4P COMPETITION --- 1990 - Meldrick 1993 Pernell (BOTH TOTAL FRIGGIN MESSES OF CONTROVERSY AND ROBBERIES) After Chavez lost to Randall by SPLIT DECISION (Ha, after he was dropped and deducted 2 points and lost blantantly one judge had Chavez winning) Chavez quits in the rematch and wins a Technical Split Decision and never fought Randall a 3rd time. Chavez by 1996 would show up 96-1-1 vs 21-0 Oscar and Chavez couldn't go 4 rounds, in 1998 at 100-2-2 Chavez quits on his stool vs Oscar then a couple years later King feeds him to his new Jr welter, Kostya - SO CELEBRATE CHAVEZ' 2 second highlight reel

This is an edited video. If you watch the full fight you can see Taylor could't find his corner at the end of round 11. Taylor didn't react after the knockdown. He wasn't looking at the referee. He was holding the ropes all the time. He could not lift his hands and show gloves to the referre. He couldn't take a single step forward. He was not responding to Steele at all. That is an authentic TKO every time.

Robert , fyi, Pernell Whitaker avoided Chavez in the 80's as well as the early 90's. I give Meldrick Taylor all the credit for meeting Chavez in his prime. Pernell Whitaker had lost to another Mexican fighter Jose Luis Ramirez in the mid 1980's in Paris and then he beat Ramirez in a rematch in his hometown . Whitaker was wise to avoid Chavez in his prime. The bias is quite obvious with US Commentators. Julio Cesar Chavez was 87-0 before he had that draw with Whitaker and then several months later, he lost his first fight with Frankie Randall, Chavez was obvious past his prime. Give credit where credit is due, Julio Cesar Chavez was one of the greatest pound for pound boxers of all time.

Taylor may have been winning the boxing match but Chavez won the war in the long run. Taylor was really never the same fighter after this. Taylor may have won a welterweight title later on but it just wasn't the Taylor that fought Chavez. Chavez simply was the better man and there's no shame in that. They were both two of the best in the world at that point. I personally think Taylor should be in the HOF.

One of the worst TV commentary ever, together with 4x400meters women relay Seul 1988, where for 3 minutes you keep hearing about the inevitable American victory but in the end you see the Soviet Union win. In total shock the voice was not be able to inform that Soviet Union won and was only able to underline that a new North American (!) record time had been established by the American team.

Today is the thirtieth anniversary of the fight. Great fight. Greater boxers. The American sportscasters Jim Lampley, Fred Merchant, Max Kellerman were dripping with racism against Chavez and Mexicans. Nothing more than cheerleaders for Taylor. More importantly, many of their comments were just blatantly wrong and betrayed their ignorance of boxing skills and strategy. The American sportscasters knew that part of Taylor camp's strategy was to throw illegal low blows at Chavez throughout the fight. But, instead of reporting it to the Nevada Boxing Commission, they announced it on TV during the second round with approval and in many instances called the low blows Taylor kept throwing as legal "body shots". Steele never called Taylor on the low blows until about the sixth round and seriously until the ninth round. Also, one of the in-between-rounds periods was 15 seconds longer than required. Coincidentally, Taylor was suffering and complaining from on-and-off blurred vision from the third round on courtesy of Chavez' hard blows to Taylor's head. The extra long rest period helped him clear his head. Also, several times Lou Duva prolonged the rest periods by staying in Taylor's corner after he should have gotten out. Steele had to yell at Duva to get out. This unethical maneuver bought additional rest time for Taylor. Before the fight , Taylor had a reputation of having fast hands but being an inaccurate puncher. Chavez was a master at avoiding and rolling with punches. Though Lampley and crew kept talking of the swarm of punches Taylor threw many of them were missing or deflated by Chavez'rolling with the punches or blocking them. The missed shots contributed to Taylor's exhaustion. If Taylor gave Chavez a "boxing lesson", Chavez gave Taylor a lesson on how to administer a physical and mental beating. The final results bear this out.

Great fight and brilliant decision by the ref. As he rightly says he is not the time-keeper, if one boxer cannot continue he is obligated to stop the fight whether that is 2secs after the start or 2secs before the end. Imagine if Chavez hit him one with one more clean punch and killed him, the ref would be liable for allowing a man who could not defend himself get killed. Somethings horses also win in the last stride, or a basketballer lands a 3 pointer on the buzzer, that's sports, get used to it.
