From the old video tape archives of Studio FTS, comes one of the most amazing, very rare, interesting, personal and in depth television interview with Julio Iglesias in 1988, on the Phil Donahue show taped in New York City, covering Julio’s career & personal life, his personality and character, the difficulties that he had to face following his car accident while in his early 20's, and more....

You're very welcome, and thank you so much for expressing your appreciation. It is a pleasure for me knowing that people out there enjoy and appreciate watching this video as I myself have enjoyed watching so many times. I remember I was in college in 1988 when this show aired on TV. I skipped class just to come home and be by the television to record the show on VCR. It's amazing how times have changed, and technology has made it possible to easily access all these rare material. Where are you from, and how long have you been a fan of Julio? All the Best...

Thank you so much for responding! Well, I am actually from Singapore believe it or not, and then Los Angeles and now I’m in Florida. I’ve been a Julio Iglesias fan since 1972. Let me tell you a little bit about that. In 1970, I was 20 years old I got into radio broadcasting over there. I was a program producer, and also a DJ and radio personality, and among other things, I presented music for the morning show from 6 am to 9 am. We had pretty much free reign to do and present who we wanted, but I was one who is always middle of the road, having a more mature taste in music, thanks to my parents, rather than the rock that my colleagues would play. So, I always played people like Andy Williams, Shirley Bassey, Sinatra, Beach Boys, Osmonds, Tom Jones, Engelbert, Humperdinck, Diana Ross, and many many more. I was what Billboard categorized as MOR (Middle of the Road). I used to have great fun every few days, going to the huge record library at the station, to check new releases when I was going to compile the music for my next show or shows, and these, of course could be from performers that we knew, or from unknown singers. So one day I went in, and looked not only for new albums, but for new singles as well. In that stack, I found a 45 rpm disc that was a Decca recording. The label said it was a singer named Julio Iglesias. The song was Un Canto Galicia. This was in 1972. At first, I thought that maybe it was somebody from England, because it was on the Decca recording label, and I thought it was somebody who was like Engelbert Humperdinck, who changed his regular name to have a fancier one. However, when I took it back to my office and put it on the record player, I realized that this was really a Spaniard, who was singing with a very attractive, appealing and unusual voice, a very unique voice. So, of course I tried to look in magazines at the time to find anything I could about him, I looked in Billboard, but no luck. So, I used to play this song very regularly and sometimes the flipside. That was the only thing I had of him, didn’t know what he looked like, just loved that song and his voice. I remember at the age of just 22, I announced on the air, just before I played this again one day and I said, “You’ve probably heard this song from me before, and I’m going to say that I have tried to research this singer without results - I can’t find him anywhere internationally, and this looks like it might be his first recording. (Of course, as I found out, it wasn’t!) But I’m going to predict that he’s going to be very, very, very famous one day. His name is Julio Iglesias and this is the only recording we have of him.” And yes, I said very three times! And then lo and behold, about a decade later, he came up with “Begin the Beguine,” and that was it. He was world famous! Needless to say I was thrilled. So that was my prediction at the age is 22, in little radio continuity studio in Singapore! However, I went to Los Angeles to study in ‘74 and a friend of mine took me to the Latino area of that city and I went into a Latino record shop just to look for his albums and I found two. They were in Spanish, and I got them both! It was the first time I ever saw his face - and he looked fine to me! So there you are I have been a great Julio Iglesias fan for a long time, my mother was a huge fan of his and I think I’m lucky that we saw him in one concert at Universal Studio Amphiteatre in Los Angeles in 1985 or 1986. I can still see him singing in my mind’s eye and still think how great he was to offer Roseanne Barr the opening spot for his US concerts. He had seen and met her on The Tonight Show and liked her so much, he offered her the gig. Julio was responsible for much of her early success and public exposure. I will always be a Julio Iglesias fan. Always!

@@OperaJH Thank you so much for this very interesting, in depth and detailed story. I found your story quite fascinating. I currently live in California, and I have shared some of my Julio stories here on this channel in the video descriptions, mostly under the videos from the show, The Arsenio Hall Show. I've been very lucky to meet Julio a few times in person, in addition to seeing him Live at many Live concerts. You can search and look for those stories and read if you like. Just wondering, do you happened to remember the title of the songs in the single record that you played back in 1972? Quite historic!! It's a pleasure for me to come across such an interesting Julio fan, and a radio personality. Here is the link to the video on this channel that I uploaded containing songs that I recorded myself Live from Julio concerts at the Universal Amphitheater back in 2008, and 1987. Such amazing memories: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PSsVxiix1V0.html It's so interesting that you saw Julio at the same place back in 1985. Best of success!! Keep in touch, Daniel .

Yes! I noticed I accidentally removed the name of the song. It was Un Canto Galicia I noticed that my post had some grammatical errors and a few missing links, so I cleaned them up. Lovely to meet you too, Daniel and I will most certainly make use of your link - you are really fortunate to have met him! My other favorite singer is the opera tenor, Jose Carreras and, I did manage to meet him. I have also met Placido Domingo and had a photo taken with him! Looks like my favorite singers are all Spanish! 😅
