But it also perked up the weeds and my lack of attention to it...is showing alot now!! Time will tell.just how bad it is, but I am.proud regardless. #fieldcorn #weeds #jack #drought #updates

You might not make the yield but you will probably net more dollars per acre than anybody with the low inputs and at the end of the day that's what it's all about.

Absolutely right. It isn't about how much you make, it's about how much you get to keep at the end

Thank you Dylan, I honestly was blown away to see anything remotely close to ears of corn!! I neglected it so bad, but hopefully those words will hold true and it will be a decent crop per dollar anyway. I still can't get over it with the lack of certain things 😳 Might just be beginners luck this year. I am proud and blessed regardless of the outcome, but I do like that possibility you mention 😉 Thank you sir for always being here, I really appreciate!! Thank you very much! I can't honestly complain with where the seaon has unfolded. The drought, lack of cultivation, neglect and rookie status!! That is only advantage with thr giant ragweed, it does pull up pretty easy!! There are a few more that are more invasive that I'm lucky I don't have yet. I think some of that is me, and some of that is soil. I hope to know more with soil teat this year after some inputs! Thank you very much for always being here, I really appreciate that!! I see corn out there Nelson! That's exciting to see! I know the weeds are frustrating, I've been there too, but you will make some corn. In those thin spots, maybe soil test those areas separately from the rest of the field so you can see how they are different. Water standing can really mess with young corn too. I don't have much advice I'm still trying to figure it out too! Don't give up, you're doing good!!!

I was so excited to walk those rows and see corn and have some in my hands!! I really believe if I had been able to cultivate, thi gs would be alot different!! I have a solution for next season both cultivating and after it's too tall..😉 I been kicking that idea around about those test. That one bad area was where the stock piled rock for the sewer line. I'm sure the dug every inch of good dirt out of that spot!! Then the water, it did mess with that area as well!! Thank you Evan, we both are learning but man it's so fun to get advice from you and I put!! I really appreciate!! Thank you sir for all the motivation and kind words, also for always being here!! Ears are always even number around. So if you want to have some fun and drive yourself crazy with yield estimates. In 38 inch rows spacing 13.75 ft is 1/1000 of an acre. So you mark out that length down a row can you count the number of ears . Some guys would take every fifth year regardless if it is big or small. But grab a couple years that are representative. If you look at Colonels near the butt of the ear you see how the rose kind of get messed up We don't count them kernels Period Where the row has a clean start that's Where you count kernels around . And then you count Colonel's long until you get close to the tip So let's say in that distance you counted 25 plants with an ear. That would represent 25,000 plants to the acre. Let's say that you were 12 around and 36 Long on the colonel count. 12 x 36 x 25000 equals 10,800,000 kernels to that acre. Now easy math we can use 100k kernels to a bushel. Divide our 10,800,000 by 100,000 and you get 108 bushel corn. The 100,000 number is just a theory or guesstimate. You kind of look at the condition of the Corn and the type of year that it had. Looking at your corn with the ears that you shown 100,000 should be a very safe and pretty damn close number. Possibly a little bit on the low side. Maybe the corn comes in at 90k per bushel, then you would have a theoretical 120 bushel

That inconsistent height at 7:35 looks like spacing is too tight for that corn breed. I'm growing heirloom corn and it likes 9-12in (24-22k pop) spacing on 30in rows (I put it in at 15in rows this year to test higher population with even spacing), modern hybrids with 'vertical leaves' and popcorn may go as tight as 6.5in (~32k pop) but your plantings overall will tell you better what you can do reliably. Planting depth consistency can be another cause, Erin H shows emergence results ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7KdHoc49ShQ.html

It might be your channel, but Jack is definitely the star. LOL. 😂😂😂 The three ear you pulled to show use was probably your profit for the hole field. LOL. Your corn looks good. The field with the uneven corn could have to do with germination or seed depth. The field with the sewer line in it is probably just the way the soil that was put back in the trench. Really your crop looks good. The drainage and soil conditions in the bottom are out of your control. Weeds are hard to control in any crop. I think for your first time planting corn you doing good. Don't get to frustrated. Corn looks pretty much the same around my area.

That he sure is, and I think he KNOWS it too Mr Monty 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was soooo worried about pulling those off, you have no idea the struggle in this OCD mind 🤦🏼🤣🤣🤣🤣 I do think seed depth was probably the biggest factor on that late planted stuff. I fought the same sod clods as I did in the wheat field last fall. I may put my no-till Colters back on until a few years go by, and I get that grass chopped up better. Yes, they sure brought up lots of clay across the whole bottom and buried my topsoil. You can see the line almost in both fields 🤬 I am taking notes and making plans for next season already. I think the more I work the soil, the better it will drain too within reason! Thank you, Mr Monty, for thr kind words and encouragement!! Fingers crossed this still work out come fall!! That one spot I still can't figure what happened. I do believe my fertilizer application does have a LOT of room for improvement though, it shows alot. The really bad area that died was a stagging area for gravel when they did the sewer line. I believe your seed is a product of mixing varieties in the idea of preserving seed at the end of planting, it pays to buy good seed, that burn down in the spring was a waste of money, there is no way to ride the fence between no till and conventional corn planting
@Pennies_on_the_dollar
@Pennies_on_the_dollar 2 месяца назад
If I were a better proprietary farmer and did everything very well and proper...I might agree more. But with my lack of experience and neglect, I find it hard to blame the product. With the intense 54" sewer main install and upsetting the soil so drastically, it's hard to get a read off one year of inputs. On top of 40+ years of nothing but grass grown here, with layers of topsoil washed away by the flooding creek year after year, certainly did not help. Then there is my rookie status on ground prep, fertilizer distribution and actual planting. Did I mess all that up to cause issues, most likely. Seed depth seems to be the general consensus on plant height, more of inputs in one spot than others I'm sure, and not planting straight to make cultivation possible. So I would say that the fault lies more in myself than with faulty seed or no-till vs tillage. As far as the burndown and pre- emerge, it may have been, but it sure did the trick for several weeks after planting to keep things at bay. I did not cultivate, again, my mistake. But to each their own opinion, and thank you for yours as well. The bottom line is I am learning, the ins and outs, do's, and don't do's. But I will say that it's an unfair judgment to make such a conclusion from the cobbling of events as this year has been. Although I AM proud to see something I worked hard at grow, others may not feel the same. Thank you for your input and being here, my apologies for falling short on the proper techniques for the correct way to farm my first year. Hope things are well your way ! 👍🏻😁

Once you've handled a bit of corn, you can tell how well it's filled out and approximate size by feeling the outside of the corn still on the stalks so you don't need to open husk ends, pull ears off, nor husk them fully for field surveys.

@RouthFarms

some plants being taller than others probably means your depth of each seed was varying. You want every single seed to germinate and sprout as close to the same time as possible. The further apart the more nutrients the older plant pulls from the younger.

Yes, I do believe that as well. It seems what I have read that actually helped alot. The lord always had a plan, he saw fit for my goof up to help some🙏🏻. That's the wild part, I neglected it so bad but I am proud regardless. I hope yours does turn around, but you had a great year last season, and it may be the beans turn to shine this year!! I think you are so right, working that field at the last min and dealing with those grass clods sure didn't help. I hope a few more times of working that sod layer it will mellow out alot. I may put my no-till Coulter bar back on just for such cases. I am taking notes on it all, and really appreciate the in depth advice and guidance!! Also for always being here, I really appreciate that!! 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🌽🌽🌽

Despite your drought, you have some corn there that's looking pretty good! 👍👍👍👍👍 Don't be hard on yourself based on what the weather did - you have no control over that and it definitely has been a dry summer in many places like yours and mine.

Thank you Mr Charlie, it's been a huge learning curve this year. I am seeing g the benefits and cons of every move I made this season. Some are at this point devastating to the corn, and others the lord will have to allow what is going to happen...to happen. Yes sir it had been a battle all year for alot of folks!! This is a hobby for me, prayers things continue to go good for all you guys this season!! Thank you sir for always being here, I really appreciate that!!! 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻🌽🌽🇺🇲🇺🇲

For dry weather that corn looks great. We have several farms around here that have entire fields that look like your end of the second field you showed.

The biggest thing is weed control. I'm thinking you should look at something with some residual that will kill stuff later on. Also, a little bit of soil testing would probably give you some better results after a year of corn. because the hybrid is a lot cheaper, doesn't mean it's that much better but not bad for the 1st time
@Pennies_on_the_dollar
@Pennies_on_the_dollar 2 месяца назад
I failed miserable in the weed control aspect, even with the chemicals. I left out a valuable ingredient in my pre-emerge herbicide. Then when that wore off, the crooked rowd kept me out of them with a cultivator. The drought kept thr corn from canopying soon enough and wide rows...here we are. I plan to do some extensive test again this year, I think my fertilizer program or application of it needs work as well. I can't complain with three hybrid yet, but it sure would have been nice to have had the luxu of RoundUp though 😳😳 Thank-you very much AJ for all the great advice and input!! I really appreciate that, as well as you always being here!! 😁😁🇺🇲🇺🇲👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻🌽🌽

@@Pennies_on_the_dollar I don't think you'll ever have a failure as big as I experienced about 25 years ago with a specialty corn that was our last year for it. Let's just say 70 acres and it didn't yield quite 500 bushel total

They aren't bad I don't guess.... 😂 that had me laughing pretty good. Man for the lack of rain i would say you have a great crop. I've never counted an ear of corn that had an odd number around always even. I was convinced you couldn't have odd numbers lol. I would guess your short patches of corn is more due to nutrients problems more over your soils ability to make the fertilizer available to the plant. I wish I could hall in a few loads of manure over those spots to jump start the soil. You might want to look into spraying some sugar water on it to feed the microbiology in the soil. There are some Comercial products you can buy but the ones I've looked into are essentially fancy sugar water with some liquid nitrogen in it 😆. Can't wait to see gleanda eating some corn!!!!

I had no idea what I was looking at 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼🤦🏼 Honestly still don't, but proud to see some yellow ears though. Well after much talk, I see where I went wrong, on the count. It had a bad kernel so I assumed you deducted one🤣🤣🤣🤣 But trust me I froze those three ears for the future and recounted 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I tell ya Tim, you are spot on with the inputs and ground conditions. After the rain, and seeing it all open backup I realized just exactly where they had buried my topsoil and brought up clay!! Yall told me it would take several years to really see the difference, and I am living that now. I added a "little extra" to the last planted, and with the rain, boy I sure see the difference 🤔😉 I can't say thank you enough for all your input and guidance, as well as always being here!! I really appreciate that!! But now I have a new reading mission on this "sugar water" mix 🤔🤔😉😉😉🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼🤦🏼 Thank you very much Tim!! 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽

@Pennies_on_the_dollar you're welcome my friend..... I see now on the count 😆 🤣 when you said 13, I was thinking...now what kind of corn did he really plant here 😆 I've never seen an odd number, which is kinda weird to think about too 🤔 (wonder why it's like that) 🤷‍♂️ aww well. Lol. It will definitely take some time to get that clay alive again. It's not that it won't produce, my clay is alive and dies good every year is a pain to get tilled and prepped but grows some good crops. I'm a couple years you won't be able to tell a difference. Did you find information on the sugar water?. I can send you some stuff if you can't.
