I must say, I visited Gettysburg several times as a child with my parents and thought I had a certain level of appreciation for the complexity of this battlefield. It wasn't until I brought my own family, after having served in the military, that my eyes really open up about this historical event.

I really love Col. Dowds presentation. So much energy and concise descriptions.

Hopefully, I will make it to Gettysburg, maybe next July. Of course I'm an old Texan so I will be scouting out the other side....I love watching your videos because they explain so much.

I've been on and watched a lot of park ranger tours and I'm REALLY sorry to say they could learn a LOT from you guys. If I'm on a tour and it's hot I don't need a lot of long, slow, folksy humor, slow talkers, rambling, or standing in one spot for 20 minutes. You guys do NONE of that. You're the best I've seen!

3 of my Cyphert ancesters fought against Barksdales men at the Sherfy farm on Emmitsburg road. 1 with the 63rd as skirmishers. And 2 were in the 105th wildcat regiment under Col. Calvin Craig fighting alongside the 57th and the 114th Zouaves..

No one cuts through the fog and chaos of battle, and gives us a clear explanation of the battle on the terrain, like Col. Dowds! I see he’s on the video, I’m there!🍿

Just got Tom McMillan's book "Gettysburg Rebels" to read about Henry Wentz, Wes Culp, and the Hoffman brothers from Gettysburg. It begs the question, why didn't Longstreet and the Confederate Army employ these soldiers to help Longstreet get into position on day 2 without doubling back into position late in the day.

@@anthonyjude4726 thanks for the tip I may just do that. I'm still going, I'm not going to let that rain on my parade. I haven't been there yet, I'm 40 and with all the BS going on in this country I feel obligated to go and pay my respects for those that stood up for the right thing a long time ago in this country

@Chris-of6xm I respect your mindset. I'm 43 and visited several times as my niece graduated from Gettysburg a couple of years ago so we went up every summer for family day. We even enjoyed some of the ghost tours they do at night and many of the hotels even have guest speakers. We had a free private history lesson for about an hour. I do not remember the name of the gentleman who did it but he was great. Hope you have a wonderful time brother.

As a Southerner , what amazes me is how fast you folks can talk ! Sometimes my mouth outruns my brain and sometimes just the opposite . Keep up the good work , as most of the time I can sort of keep up , with closed captions .

Being from Alabama and Georgia I agree with the fast talking....My Great Grand Father Albert Holman Austin Co. E. Alabama 15th. under Col. Oates was captured at Gettysburg and released from Fort Delaware after the war....Have a blessed day....

Great presentation as usual! That picket fence at the Roger’s farm has a bit of meaning for me. I and several others were assigned to scrape the chipping paint off the fence so that NPS can spray paint it a few weeks later. Not a fun job, but rewarding nonetheless. As a volunteer for a week, I had a bunch of other good manual jobs though (fence construction, brush removal, etc). We actually found a regimental marker that had been covered for some period. Makes one appreciate all the work that goes into maintaining this hallowed ground!

I like the Col Dowds suggestion of attack. Vietnam taught us to a reserve in case we had a breakthrough. The was welcome sight when the call was made. The reserve could also help us secure the forward position. In the heat of battle our position at times was extremely difficult but we were ordered to hold at all costs. I would have thought that serving with the Colonel would have been a pleasure. Hoorah!

Mahone and Anderson were acting like cowards, lounging in Spangler woods with his staff and never crossed Emittsburg Road. Mahone refused orders to advance to support Wright and Wilcox.

Even though the southern soldiers were guilty of high treason. It’s good to see that farmer enemies could come back together in friendship at reunions. The northern soldiers were not the enemy. The people fight for the south with a true enemies.
