July Vegetable Garden Tour | Growing Food In Alaska

After putting our sawmill to use and building a flower planter box for our new garden entrance, we give you a full tour of our high tunnel and outdoor garden area.
With the short growing season in Alaska we focus on high production and preserving what crops we grow. July, however, is a month of abundance and we can harvest fresh food each day while still ensuring there is enough produce to preserve later in the season.
We take a quick peek at our mini orchard to see how the fruit trees and flowers are coming along this year.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

Jealousy!!
@ithinkdoyou
@ithinkdoyou 2 года назад
It's not like they are even doing anything controversial on this video (well I am only 3 minutes on, so I guess I should say yet) but even videos where they are hunting or fishing, they a subsistence hunting and not wasting food or resources, and they either eat or feed to their animals everything the harvest. If the offence is cutting down trees, the tree they are removing (which is not a significant amount) is dead already and a fire risk. If the argument is they are using carbon based fuels for vehicles, my response is going to be "are you living off grid with solar and well water or are you living on grid with all the modern conveniences like tap water, a fridge, mains gas and electricity?" They are amazing people living an unreal life that makes them happy, and I'm sorta jealous.

I removed a post from our yard while my husband was at work one day. I drilled a 2” hole right through it, about 7” up from the ground and the I slid a pry bar through the hole. Then I put hubby’s hydrolic floor jack under the pry bar , right close to the post, and jacked that thing right out of the ground. I love your channel. Your content is wonderful. I'm watching this video and I can't help but to start bawling. We were planning on moving to Soldotna Alaska to help with my bf and my aging parents. We visited in May and made all these plans for this summer. 2 and a half weeks ago, 10 people living and visiting in their household got sick and tested positive for COVID. A week later my father in law passed and a few days after that, my mother in law passed and yesterday my bf aunt passed. We are beyond devastated and our heads are spinning. We lost the matriarchs and patriarch of our family in the blink of an eye. I just can't believe it. Between the bouts of crying and hysteria, I'm trying my best to take care of everyone. We still want to move to Ak, but it won't be the same walking into their empty house 😞😞

As I was about to mention Lovage which I have used in past as additional flavoring for stews and fresh leaves in salad, I heard Arielle mention a Lovage plant. I contributes a celery-like flavor and requires minimal care. The leaves also dry for use in cooking, a very savory plant.

I knew that the one dog was having problems, I didn't know that he passed.... he will be remembered and missed as dogs are truly one of mans very best friends. I have watched this channel grow from the very first and not sure as to how many subscribers then but do remember the video that shared the excitement of the first hundred thousand.... It was a long way from the hundred mark as it seems like a long time ago. This channel struggled for a bit but you both dug in to raise content and quality. Its obvious it worked and will get to the million mark in around three years. I wish the absolute very best for you and when different sponsors come forward, I hope that one is a solar company to help with establishing power unlimited. Wild wonderful off grid is a channel I am sure that the two of you watch. It has the hard working talented Josh who can wire a spaceship and Erin who along with dressing for guys to stare at some... lot, hasn't got a thing on you girl. Very pretty, talent galore, and loyal to her man. Quite noticeable and appreciated by guys like myself although I'm 73, would of been proud to have a lady as yourself by myside.. this is not a hit on, its a compliment or intended to be taken as such. I refer to these channels as you are climbing quick and don't want my neighbor only forty miles up the road from me to fail in any way possible. The other is Trent and Allie in Utah. Your our representatives of alaska. To you both, good luck and congrats on another very good video. Just think, over four and a half million views this month alone

Ooo love all the flowers! I just harvested Red Runner beans and cooked them up. They are one of the best tasting beans, juicy and sweet and prolific! Don’t remove the roots after they die back. Leave the roots in the ground and cover it in compost and layer it with heavy mulch. A few of the roots turned into tubers which was way more resistant to bugs eating the vines or leaves. It put on new leaves easily. And leave as much of the vine on the trellis as possible so they will sprout new shoots off the vines next year and you get a head start on the growing season. Hope that helps, but perhaps you already know this. Hahaha. Great tour by the way. Love the new garden gate/entryway.

If you get alot of green tomatoes, make green tomato relish. It's spectacular on scrambled eggs (just ate some with it), meats, or some even like it on ice cream (yuk)! It has cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, and just makes everything taste better. My family of 8 brothers and sisters grew up with it and now make it ourselves. It has alot of sugar, but you could add or subtract to your liking. I bet you two would love adding a touch of heat to it as well. It's something that cooks down, and with the sugar in it, you have to stir often, or maybe try adding it towards the end of cooking, and just add to taste. I'm sure there are RU-vid videos on how to make it, or recipes online. Growing up, my mom canned 300 quarts of tomatoes!!!! and used the green ones for relish! Thanks for taking us on your life's adventures with you.

Super awesome to see those wood chips in your orchard! I've been finding out when it's best to use wood chips and have discovered that my perennial plants love the fungal biome that the wood chips provide, but my annual plants do much better in a bacterial biome, such as is produced with compost and worm castings. Thanks for another great video!

@@SimpleLivingAlaska yes absolutely. And the added benefit with a heavy wood mulch for perennial plants is that they need much less water than if they had even a compost type mulch on top. Last year I watered my garden only a handful of times in the hot summer and successfully grew a few huge hubbard squash, and some super moon pumpkins. Another thing I thought was amazing is how long those winter squash lasted just sitting on top of my fridge inside. They cured for 6 months before I opened up any of them and could have lasted longer, if necessary.

I'm sorry you didn't grow more wildflowers (you seemed a little sad when you mentioned it)... as usual, just absolutely lovely garden! I really look forward to seeing the natural wonders of your beautiful greenery! You guys got the skills, for sure... love your flower box fence... good on Eric for helping with the green dream! It seems your inside sunflowers are 2-3dads high... yay! I was sad to see the video end... I might have to watch it again later... BTW- if you are going to build a bigger house, try wild flowers closer to the house... take care! Look forward to your harvest/cooking shows in the future!🍎

Look up the no dig method, maybe that will help with the weeds. I find it very useful and much easier than tilling/hoeing

Have you thought about redoing the whole garden with cardboard underneath your beds and aisles? Like the no dig method? And then maybe doing chicken tractors in the off season to help your soil? Justin Rhodes here on RU-vid has a ton of information on how to work chickens with your gardens.

i have been watching you guys for a while now. I have seen ALL your videos now, some 3 or 4 times just for canning along with you, or fileting a fish from watching Eric. its what i look forward to every time you guys do a new video. I was born and raised, and still reside in Sonoma County(santa rosa to be exact, about 5 minute walk to SRJC) Ive tried new things in my garden many times just from learning from you guys. I had been growing a small garden and canning since 2013 but really dove deep into it in 2015. and every year that followed i had my husband build me yet another raised bed, and still am asking him for more. ive takin up as much space as I can and still look for more spots to grow in lol. I am always so deeply entertained by both of you, and love the recipes and garden experiences you share( my 8 year old daughter loves all the hunting, fishing and cutting down of animals). Keep doing what you do. its amazing to watch all your adventures.. one question always comes to mind when i watch your videos.... Do you guys entertain friends and family ever??

Your garden is so beautiful and so abundant. I hope to get my gardens to eventually look as good as yours.Your flower box on top of the fence is a really cool idea. It’s going to be a grand entrance to the garden. I really think it’s so awesome you guys experiment and try growing many different things. I’ve tried fig trees and I am hoping I have some on next year. Another great video!

Another great video. For my garden and fruit trees I use a variation on Jerry Baker’s Grandma Putts Spring Tonic recipe. Remember that dry measure goes in dip cups and liquid measure goes in pouring cups. For this recipe use: 1/2 cup liquid dish soap, 1 cup Epsom salts, 1 cup mouthwash, 1 cup ammonia and 2 cans of beer. I add all ingredients together in a gallon jug and mix until the Epsom Salts have dissolved by adding additional water to fill the gallon. With this mix I spray fruit trees, shrubs, garden and grass in the spring, mid summer and in the case of winter hardy shrubs and perennials early fall also. Cleanliness is next to godliness and in the case of plants, their cleaning is usually left to the elements. Our fruit trees began bearing fruit by their third season. Thanks for sharing this video of your journey together. Wishing you and your family (furry kids included) another great week.

Oh wow love that idea of flowing Nasturtiums and that wood saw is amazing. Gorgeous box that is. As always the garden and green house are such beautiful abundant joyful spaces. Always love seeing every stage of them every year. Was wondering about the little orchard :) The trees for the most part are looking good even with the bumps. hugs

My grandmother's garden and my garden, we let our chickens ran free after plants are mature enough in our garden and didn't hurt the garden at all if anything they made the garden flourish. The organisms in the soil love the poo and flourish in the soil, which is what the garden loves.
