Alaska's bounty of wild foods make summers incredible here. We celebrate a successful foraging trip by making dandelion and rose petal syrup and finish off the evening enjoying a spruce tip inspired meal outdoors.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

@ostrobogulous1 3 года назад
@@lgull1 Thank you for that perfectly negative perspective! 🙄 There are quite a few people that garden and can foods and there's nothing wrong with increasing your knowledge of foraging and homesteading in general. We've all gotten too used to over processed foods and drive-thru convenience at the expense of our health. We've forgotten how to grow and eat healthy fresh foods directly from the Earth. I don't live in Alaska and most of the things they talk about ARE available in my area...but hey...you do you.

I love hügelkultur beds, but for the top growth to succeed they would need to avoid wood from allelopathic trees like black walnut (for its juglone toxicity); high-resin trees like pine, spruce, yew, juniper and cedar; and hard, rot-resistant woods such as black locust, Osage orange and redwood and any type of wood with sprouting potential (such as willow) should be completely dead before using. I think some of the trees in their pile are in these categories.
@ozarksbuckslayer2484

Have you considered building a huge Hügelkultur mound out of the soily stump mound ? Turn a problem into a free food growing solution that could increase the rent value of the possible future rental property. Also, I've been eating Dandelion flowers for about 40 years, I fry the flowers in the same breading or batter and grease after frying Morel mushrooms, the Dandelions take on much of the flavor of the Morels. 😋

I was thinking that too! You could make a decent living on an Airbnb in Alaska! You could also make it more than just a place to sleep you could offer your listing as an experience and offer different options for an extra price like guided fishing trips, or guided foraging and then cooking what you found, guided hunting and then cooking, sooo many possibilities!!!! People pay really good money for those types of experiences and you two would be amazing at it!!! Seriously! If I wasn’t disabled I would totally book adventures with you guys when we go to Alaska! Oh and I also would start on Airbnb but then once you get comfortable with everything I would definitely move to doing it on your own with your own website because you have enough followers and word of mouth to do it on your own and then you would get all the profits.

Like off grid air B&B for pros who can handle their own. Or special "extra services" for say the city folks where u kinda set them up for success and give them an instructional tour. And maybe take them on a tour of "YOUR part of Alaska" the wild. A fishin hole. Your favorite views.. Etc. I see you makin some great money! I would gladly pay great money to stay in your air b&b. And have your support thru it.. Learn hand over hand directly from you. Having you show me all the beautiful places that only live on my tv. I would love to hang out with y'all for a day and learn more about the wilderness. I started watching the two of you a short while ago and I realized some of your videos I'm watching are older as well as the newer ones but I humbly say this. I've been in the world a long time and I'm telling you I am in awe of your knowledge and skills. Especially after you mentioned your backgrounds I thought maybe you had careers that gave you these skills but you are far above any of the videos of off-grid cabins that I have watched. I do admire a lot of the off-grid cabin or huts whatever they may be but I haven't found anything that lives up to what you have accomplished. Then I've just come across your 2021 video of the other parcel of land that you bought. I have shared your videos with other people n they feel the same way. You've actually got a little mini town you got your beautiful garden of vegetables the canning the building of the root cellar putting that siding on your house just the two of you. All the recipes and tips and information you give. I don't know if there's anything that you don't know about in those woods. And of course being an animal lover I love the dogs and the cat out there and you making sure the dogs are warm on certain days. I am a little curious about the cat though I've seen you I guess maybe an earlier videos leave to go away from your cabin and you take the dogs but what happens to the cat is he tucked away somewhere else that we don't know. I love watching your fur babies as well. I was surprised to hear that both your dogs are the same age where one seems older the other one seems like a puppy..lol I grew up with a mother who kept canning and making her own bread and anything else. Even though I tried I was never blessed like she was with doing that. Each video that I see whether it be an older video or a newer video I learn something and I'm always impressed. 🙋

I have learned so much from her channel over the years, I hope she can help you too! Another channel I trust is one called “Learn the land” he has an actual degree in plants and their properties for those who would rather listen to someone from that area of education. I'm wondering about what you said regarding the roses and the bitterness when you steep them as tea. Do you always steep your herbal teas with boiling water? I know that if I use boiling water with a delicate tea, like white or green tea, it makes them taste REALLY bitter. If you end up with more roses (and I'm headed to Hatcher Pass this weekend to see what's out and about), maybe try steeping them at just under boiling, like 180 or 190 degrees (to me, it's when I can start to "hear" the water heating up) and see if that helps?

As always, I am so impressed by your culinary endeavors! Also, there was a moment of peak physical comedy in there when Eric went into give Arielle a kiss RIGHT when she’d taken the world’s biggest bite of salad - I laughed.

The faces that Arielle pulls when she is un-hinging her jaw to put a gigantic forkful of salad into her mouth give me so much life. You guys are just the best. I love seeing two young people making their own path in the world with so much joy and curiosity.

I would have never thought to do that with dandelions. Today though I got to taste some different syrups and jelly's that my friend made. She made jelly from violets, dandelion which was awesome! I now think of dandelions in a different way. She also made some honeysuckle jelly! I couldn't believe how much it tasted like honey. I have that growing all over my fence. Now I think I'm going to have to harvest some and make some myself.

I was raised harvesting dandelion greens here in Vermont. Harvest before the buds start to open. We steam the greens - like beet greens.

Never one to comment, but I've been enjoying some Zen watching you two. I feel like your "mom" now that lives in Iowa and is worried about you - as well as Bo & Bandit. I am so happy you are living your best lives. (Baking soda & water (made into a paste) is wonderful for pulling the sting out of bee stings and bug bites in general.)

I think you can make coffee from the dandelions roots if I recall correctly. And salad from the leafs when new and tender since they won't be as bitter.

We bought a few acres 5 miles from Mt. Washington in New Hampshire and bought 3 10x10 really well made ‘sheds’. Built by Amish. We intend to attach them to each other as a vacation ‘house’. Bedroom dining/ kitchen bathroom. Most of the property is wetlands with a small buildable area. There is a stream in back. Snowmobile heaven. We will sell it as such.

Peace & Joy to you guys. May your love and understanding for each other grow like your spinach! Open your doors, walk it out and talk it out. Fresh picked rose petals and steaming water in a mason jar are bee-you-tea-full. I think I'm going to try that.
