The sequence of Roglic and Jonas continuously attacking Pog was amazing. The whole Jumbo team was all in for Jonas today. Roglic went all out for him hurt. And Jonas finished it off, and he was amazing!!! Most exciting Tour de France stage in a couple years…

I've been watching the Tour since the 80's and I believe this stage was one of the best I have ever seen. I am not sure if I have ever seen a stage in which the action between the top contenders went on for so long. I have enormous respect for Roglic today. What a great team mate he has proven to be. One thing about Pogacar. I don't think he ever thought he was invincible, I think that is why he's been so aggressive and asserting his dominance in the earlier, easier stages. It's not hubris, it's the opposite of that, I think it was posing to look a little bit bigger than he actually was against an opponent who he suspected was more powerful than him from day one, and hoping to build as much of a buffer as possible before the really tough mountain stages. I totally fell for it btw, and I think a lot of the peloton fell for it as well. But in hindsight, it is weird that he goes for a sprint trying to gain 1 second on Vingegaard, if he fully trusts he can take minutes on him on the next proper climb. Clearly, he didn't trust in that. Which is not to say he's finished now, not by a long shot. But I think he knew before the tour began that this tour wasn't going to be as easy for him as last year's.
@Relevant_Irrelevance
@Relevant_Irrelevance 2 года назад
I agree. Pogi trying to gain all he can, when he can in the first week came off like a strategy to maintain a lead with bonus seconds and psychological damage. I wonder how different the race would be if he hadn’t tried to chase everything? More conservative might have saved him from this stage happening, or could the gap be even lrger?
@gladtobeangry
@gladtobeangry 2 года назад
@@Relevant_Irrelevance I think the gap would have been larger. It's the psychological aspect. Vingegaard said he wasn't confident on Galibier, because he believed Pogacar was going to counter attack and leave them all behind. Had he been more confident, who knows? He might have pushed even harder on Galibier and just dropped him there. Also, it's not Pogacar's style to hang back in the peloton making himself small, so he just needs to keep doing what comes natural to him. Not only great to watch, but it's his best chance of regaining all the time he lost today.

Jumbo double teaming Pog was the first time in my life my entire family were glued to the screen and screaming and yelling about cycling. It was an absolute spectacle. The greatest riders, in the biggest race going absolutely crazy with still 2 hours left of racing. Unhinged. Also Pog probably was pacing Galibier hard to stop Jonas attacking him and getting the benefit of WVA up ahead. Jonas said afterwards Pog was really strong when he was pacing. And when you're at that altitude and at the limit, if Pog is pulling that hard it really discourages you physiologically from attacking him because you can't know what he has left and Jonas logically could be worried about attacking as a waste of energy.

What a stage! TJV played a strategy masterclass. They most likely knew Roglic didn't have it, so when he could still pretend to be strong he did an early bait attack, and Pogacar took the bait. Vingegaard was the strongest rider, but I think Pogi was the second strongest by some margin. It was evident on the Galibier. He just got played by Jumbo. I expect him to rebound to second place in GC, but Jonas will be hard to catch. I think the two will put minutes into Thomas, Yates, Quintana, Bardet and Gaudu on a stage that is raced in a more traditional way, perhaps tomorrow. Today also proved that you guys are the best cycling analysts around. I have stopped consuming most other cycling medias, as their knowledge and predictions are completely amateurish compared to you two. Like Patrick, I too wondered on the Galibier whether I had been listening to a flat-earther. But I hadn't. I had been listening to the smartest cycling pundit around. Definitely the best stage in a Grand Tour I've seen in years, and possibly even the best I ever watched (I've been actively following since 2009, so not insanely long). I may have seen stages that had me screaming at my television more in excitement, but this was something else. I think I watched the whole thing pretty much in silence, except for a few curses at "spectators" making a spectacle of themselves and getting in the way of riders. I was just gripped by the constantly shifting balance of power in the stage. When they started the rolling attacks on Telegraphe/Galibier, I thought Jumbo had it, then when Roglic got dropped it went to Pogacar. Then the Roglic group makes it back, balance of power shifts again, the climb starts, all of Jumbo's domestiques and Roglic all get dropped and Maika of all people (like ... what?! How the hell did he get back up here ?!) is back for Pogacar, another shift of power. And then Jonas just went, and left everybody behind him in the dust. Whatever happened to Pogacar on that last climb, whether it was just a bad day, or he ate something wrong, or not enough, or he got cooked on Galibier, I don't think it's over for him at all. Like you say, he'll attack and start taking time back, and 2,22 isn't even that much. With the 2 Ineos riders still within reasonable distance of the yellow as well, they could just hang back, hanging on to the coattails of UAE and Jumbo fighting each other into total exhaustion, then do the same thing Jumbo did today with Yates and Thomas rolling attacks on the competition, and then have the best out of those 2 go deep in the last mountain stage in the tour. Bardet is Bardet so he'll probably lose some time again tomorrow, regain some time in a later stage, then lose it again, and end in 7th place after the time trial. I love the guy, but I don't think he's really a threat to the yellow at any point. And I'm saying that hoping it will be famous last words. At least I hope these guys will all start battling with each other in a reasonably close competition until the time trial, and Jumbo don't grab like another minute and a half tomorrow and put a stamp and seal on the yellow for the rest of the tour. Happy for Lanterne being vindicated that the Earth is indeed not flat. Just needs a little work on the mic technique there. Scream volume was fine. Just needs that little bit more distance away from the mic.

What resonated with me after listenig to you after the Longwy stage was that Patrick said Pogacar only really sees Roglic as his competitor. TJV noticed that and played it to perfection. I thought the better move would be to destroy UAE's domestiques first before attacking. But because it's Roglic, Pog had to chase even if he doesn't need to. Kudos to other teams for letting Pog close the gaps himself. I was hoping for something like this to happen instead of waiting on the last climb to make the moves and thanks TJV for lighting the race up.

That's totally possible. And it is also part of having a team. They don't only pace for you, they bring you food, water, and control the attacks so that you can relax for a few seconds. Pogacar basically couldn't have a break or eat a bar for the whole Galibier.

Gaudu and Vlasov paced themselves really well, both were dropped on the Telegraphe initially. Jumbo won't be able to 1-2 Pog anymore so that's an advantage for Pogacar. I think Jakobsen will OTL, 40 mins down today. Madouas crazy level today... I was suprised Ineos never attacked off of Majka's pace. On the flat Pogacar can't get away but on a climb if you 1-2 him he can just set a strong pace to discourage attacks so it was a better strategy in my opinion. Pogacar will fight back, thats for sure. What a stage

Thanks guys. There was a real sense of the King is deposed. If you watch Moto video of the last 1km where each rider comes in with their own moto Jonas, Nairo, Romain, Geraint, David all get huge unrelenting cheers and banging of the boards from the crowd but when Pog comes by with his gilet open and flapping there is a shocked silence and then far more muted sympathy cheers of the sort "well done for sticking to it and finishing".

This is my first TdF viewing of the race, not just highlights, so I can honestly say today is the most exciting stage ever. That was insane watching TJV pick away at Pogachar. I was enjoying every second of it. I chose Jonas to win because I believed he could do it and I wanted someone else to wear that jersey. I always root for the underdog and anyone not named Pogachar is an underdog.

Jonas was simply amazing, bravo! Agree with Patrick’s comment about Pog’s hubris. Yes, on Telegraph, Pog was fresh, but you have much better chances of breaking him there than letting him get to final climb (Pog wouldn’t have cracked). Roglic was absolutely key to breaking Pog. You’d never see any other rider from another team help run rolling attacks, only 2 genuine threats (in Pog’s mind) and they were on the same team. Finally, back in the dark times, a former Postal Service rider whose name I refuse to say, only concerned himself with Jan Ulrich and didn’t follow any other moves. Pog should rewatch the tapes.

I think even the biggest fans of Vingegaard would not have expected him to gain so much time on Pogacar. Under normal circumstances, he should have at least been able to close down Quintana and Bardet. Even more significantly, he was also overtaken by Thomas, Yates and Gaudu. All riders whom he (and Vingegaard) had distanced on the Galibier and normally eats for breakfast. Something went badly wrong to leave him so drained of energy. Hope he recovers quickly - something he has been renowned for - and regains his best form for the coming stages. On the plus side, Roglic is now even further back (11 1/2 min on GC), so I don't think that TJV can do the left hook - right hook tactic they did today.

Unpopular opinion: TJV didnt do nearly as much for Jonas today as most think Van Hooydonck-as expected didnt play a role today Kuss-only visible when crossing the finish line with Roglic Laporte-pulled on a short descent with Pogacar on the wheel Kruijswijk-paced a little, thats about it Wout-paced a false flat descent fast, chasing no GC guy and pulling away from nobody since everyone was in that group Benoot-paced some on Galibier, did his job Roglic-attacked a few times , making Pogacar close the gap because its still Roglic, basically a decoy So arguably, the last two did the most for Jonas, but nothing extraordinary. But of course, feel free to change my mind

@joelecho
@joelecho 2 года назад
@@AndrewDemack I agree. I have to think that part of why Pog pulls too hard on Galibier is because he knows WvA is waiting on the other side and he can't let Jonas get him. Sometimes strategy isn't in the options you take but the options that you take away. TjV made Pog feel cornered, he burned a whole bunch of matches chasing down Rog a half dozen times, and then Jonas lit the afterburners at the end, but if TjV doesn't make Pog feel like he's threatened he gets to the final climb with way more in the tank.

Another outstanding podcast and of course the thrill of throwing off the 'flat earth' moniker and putting it on the backs of those of us who genuflect at the Pogacar Altar...well that's good too! Of course knowing that we'd get a jubilant outburst from LR made today's podcast all the better. And yes it was a tremendously entertaining stage. So many story lines and momentum shifts. That was an awesome display of cycling attacks, counter attacks and strategies. No matter who you were rooting for, you had to simply take it all in and enjoy the moment. I think the JV tactic was to bait / encourage Pog all day to use his energy, those one two attacks on the flatter sections make complete sense when Pog goes full gas to close each one down, when Pog paced himself they let him and let him use his energy. Hats off to whoever worked it out. I would love to know if it was pre-planned and if it was Rog (who knows him well) who proposed the tactic or if it was Jan Boven etc. Would also love to know if Rog was giving Pog some banter about being on his own etc. to encourage his continued efforts. Would explain why Pog was so keen to drop Rog - would also be a good reason to bring him back before the final climb (for the last comedy „me again - you haven’t even get rid of me“ whisper in the ear) I also think LR prediction of 40s would have been accurate if Pog had fed well; but no team to get him the food / water he needed so he absolutely bonked in those last km‘s. Hopefully the next weeks are going to be wonderful racing.

UAE does not have to control anymore and can put riders up the road. The attacks will be coming from Bardet, Pog and maybe even Yates. Let’s see if KRUIJSWIJK, Kuss and Rog can handle them.
