Jump at the Sun + Glass Island + Wizard's Walk - Fiddle Tunes

I was able to visit the U.K. this Summer!!! This video has some clips of a few of the places I visited, and three neat fiddle tunes: Jump at the Sun, Glass Island Reel, and Wizard's Walk.
Jump at the Sun is an English tune written by John Kirkpatrick:
www.johnkirkpat...
Glass Island Reel is an American tune written by Ethan Hazzard-Watkins:
www.ethanhw.com/
Wizard's Walk is an American tune written by Jay Ungar:
jayandmolly.com/
They are really neat, more modern tunes! They all have a twist to them that makes them really interesting - Jump at the Sun and Wizard's Walk use some really neat sounding accidentals, and Glass Island has an interesting jig-like pulse in the A Part, given that it's actually a reel. I really wanted to play and English tune since I was going to spend a significant amount of time in England, and Jump at the Sun was one of the few English tunes I knew. I believe Glass Island and Wizard's Walk are both American tunes, but I think they all fit together okay. =)
The main goal of my vacation was to learn as much as I could about traditional music in the U.K. I spent one week in England, a few days in Northern Wales, and another week in Scotland. I went to as many music venues and sessions as I could find, and I met so many talented musicians and learned so much about the traditional music that I love to play.
I noticed that the traditional music seemed to be harder to find in England, and I couldn't find much outside of music stores in Wales. Busking is illegal in many English cities that I visited, and I found it difficult to find places I could play music to film the video without people thinking I was busking. I purchased multiple English country dance tunes music books, and I'm excited to learn more English tunes! Right now, I know only a few English tunes - so it will be great to learn more. Although I couldn't find many sessions in England, I had an amazing time visiting, and have many nice new tune books to learn from. =)
Wales was also a very nice country to visit. I think I will want to plan a vacation specifically to visit more of Wales someday. Wales was beautiful, and even with the rain and gloves, I had an amazing time! ^_^
As soon as I traveled to Scotland, it had a completely different music vibe compared to England. There were people playing their fiddles and bagpipes all over the place, and a session in nearly every bar/pub. The Malones on the Mall Irish pub in Edinburgh (www.malonesedin...) allowed me to film a few tunes on their property in the morning after I had asked. I liked that people seemed to appreciate the music in Scotland.
It makes sense that there was so much more music in Scotland after i learned more about the history and how traditional music impacted the people living there. There have been great efforts to preserve Scottish traditional music, and I had the great honor to visit the Highland Music Trust - a group of extremely talented people who dedicated hours upon hours of time writing down as many Scottish tunes as they can (This is not sponsored! They are just awesome):
www.heallan.com/
I bought 2 of their books and a CD, and I've been having the best time looking through all the Scottish tunes. =)
I filmed a second video of just Scottish tunes while I was in Scotland, and I'm excited to start working on editing it together! I have so much footage, so if anyone is interested in some of the other Scottish footage, I could make a second video-clip montage video. I'm not sure how well this one will go over, so I'll see how it goes. It's something a bit different from the other content I've made...I think it's important to change things up a bit every-now-and-then to keep things interesting.
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)
~ Katy

What a wonderful trip for you! We live in Wales, but spend several months over the summer in the Highlands of Scotland. The young musical talent up there is amazing! A friend is just moving there from England & says her 8yr old son will have the opportunity in school of learning up to 4 instruments if he wants to -not the case in England or Wales....I am not a very good or advanced fiddle player, but buy a new fiddle book every time I go up to Scotland!😁

Hi Katy!I'm glad to see you made a trip to see us in the UK. There is a lot of years of history in this country, old history, whereas in America the history is more modern history. If you can come again visit Ireland, the music there oozes out of the pores of the people, and buskers are every where.Sorry the weather was not too good, but we get what is left of your weather after it has crossed the Atlantic.I hope you can find some worthy tunes on your CDs and in the tune books to dazzle us with your dexterity.I do hope you can come again, and find more music in England, there are many fine musicians, playing and singing here.Yours Peter Leonard

Hi there, I'm half Irish, and half Italian, so tell me which bit of American history, did my forebears destroy? Actually I was trying to say that there is still,a lot more in the UK for Katy to see, than she managed on this visit. I was not trying to disparage America in any way. For instance how many Motte and Baileys did the Normans build in New England, following there invasion of Britain in 1066?
@peterleonard2562
@peterleonard2562 7 лет назад
'There invasion' should have read 'their invasion'
@peterleonard2562
@peterleonard2562 7 лет назад
Hurricane G-E-L! That is OK. I feel similarly about the UK. I don't take to criticism well either. I know America has a great history, dramatic scenery, and natural wonders, and a very interesting mix of people. The UK has just a little more going back in time, and on a much smaller scale. We are packed into a mini, while you are in a stretched limousine. Peter

This isn't intended to provoke any ire, and I hope it won't. I just think some reflection on the comments made earlier may be in order. The musical melting pot is one thing, but European colonialists, British, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian ... and others, have had a very destructive effect on America ... ask a Native if you know one? We invaded America ... we didn't discover it. Katy, my sincere apologies for posting this on your wonderful music channel. It's not something I would normally do. I just hope it may provide some people with a little food for thought. Thank you for your wonderful music, and inspirational playing. Look forward to hearing lots more!

You have immense talent. I played Celtic for years and later English ballads/folk tunes and we could never seem to find the right fiddle player. I'm in Boston, but I have a lot of very good friends in England, you might want to check out the West Country next time, because that is where all the good traditional music is, as well as folk clubs and festivals and the like.

Wonderful playing and great video! I found this video after learning Jump at the Sun and wanted to play along with someone. Lively! And I love how you shift to a different key. This tune is played with The Coleraine and another I don't recall at the session at my local. They call it the Halloween set because it's spooky. The rest of the tunes you played I am unfamiliar with, but they were great! I love the little twists that make them so interesting.

And thanks for tutorials - although i'm playing not violin( i play ukulele, guitar and flute), it is much easier to learn with you, then with sheet music! @norwayslazinger
@norwayslazinger 4 года назад
I think almost all towns&cities require you to have a permit to busk officially
@ryanevans7317
@ryanevans7317 4 года назад
@@norwayslazinger A few towns and cities require a permit for busking, but generally you can just pitch up and play. You do need one if selling CDs though (street trading). Most have guidelines for buskers on amount of time spent on any one pitch and popular touristy cities often have informal arrangements between street performers. Where a permit is needed it is generally free. London is different of course, where there are certain area you need to apply and pay for a pitch. It is certainly not illegal on public land, but most likely will be on private land that is open to the public like shopping centres etc.
