BOO! James and Chelsea talk the art of the jump scare. If you're watching the video version of this, there will be lots of clips of jump scares with NO SOUND (to avoid the audio-only version of the podcast being a bunch of loud sounds with no visual context). If you don't want scares from movies you haven't seen spoiled, consider this your heads-up.

Jump-scares in horror, are like cursing in comedy; overuse cheapens the mediums, but when used sparingly they can offer effective punctuation.

I think that's why the jump scare from Haunting of Hill House works so well. Theres not a single other jump scare like that throughout the entire show, so you absolutely are not expecting anything like that

Like Chelsea said, when they're done right and well, they're fine. My favorite example is in the American The Ring from 2002 when Rachel is watching the tape of Samara's session with the lighthouse's light appearing every now and then, illuminating the hall behind her and on the third light I think, Mr. Morgan is standing there. It's awesome, especially because it's without any sound effect. Don't get me wrong, you can use sounds. Just as long as they make sense. As long as they're sounds the characters can hear in their world, not just a loud bang when someone appears. And don't get me started on the typical all sound drowning out, panning the camera one way and then....we all know what happens. Fuck. That.

While not a horror movie, The Dark Knight has one of my favorite jump scares in cinema. The scene where the corpse of one of the Batman impostors slams into the mayor's office window in full Joker makeup after a dialogue heavy scene between the mayor and Dent. That scene has always stuck out to me and one that still startles me upon repeated viewings. It also serves as a turning point in the film. Up until this jump scare, Batman and the police have focused more on the mob than on Joker. Despite acknowledging his existence earlier when they are investigating the bank that the Joker robbed in the opening scene, Batman asks Gordon if taking him down is more important than the mob. So even then, he is almost an afterthought to Batman and the police. It is no coincidence when this jump scare comes off immediately from a scene that is the good guys believing that things are going to go well for the rest of the film. It switches their attention from the mob to this madman who is going to give them all hell by the time the credits roll. It is a clever use of a jump scare to not only get a reaction from the audience, but to signify a major shift in dynamics in the film.

Then on the drive home, I saw a ghostly Woman in White on the side of the road and when we turn around to pick her up, she was gone, which made me start to sob again. "When James and I did Insidious we didn't want any cats jumping out, no false scares. I know it’s not a horror film, but Signs always left a scar in me with 3 scenes in particular. The first being the damn chase scene where you see the alien’s leg as it flees into the corn field. Then the other scene is where Joaquin Phoenix is watching the news and the alien walks across some Mexican children’s party and his reaction perfectly emulates how I felt. And afterwards when they are in the night hiding out in the basement and the aliens hand is there all along and the kid is cozying up next to some old radiator and gets choked out.

Some of my faves: 1. The door slam from “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” 2. Annie’s death in “Halloween” 3. Alan Arkin leaping out of the shadows at Audrey Hepburn in “Wait Until Dark” 4. The wheelchair at the top of the stairs in “The Changeling” 5. The end of “Friday the 13th” 6. The hand clap from “The Conjuring” 7. The feet licking scene in “Gerald’s Game” 8. Liv Tyler seeing bag head for the first time in “Strangers” 9. Clever girl from “Jurassic Park” 10. And I have to mention “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” The scene where the UFO appears behind his truck and then everything goes crazy and then it gets silent right before his flashlight turns back on. That is a master class in film making.

The jumpscare that has stuck with me the most is when the witch jumps from the wardrobe in the first Conjuring movie. That was the first horror movie I willingly watched and I was totally prepared for something scary to come out of the closet but then it misleads you when it's revealed that the monster is on top of the closet. Easily the most effective jumpscare I've experienced in my life.

Did anyone ever see "Flight of the Living Dead, Outbreak on a plane" I haven't seen it in years, but at the end of the movie it shows a bunch a zombies walking off into the distance, and then out of f*cking nowhere, the scariest looking zombie in the movie, just pops up in front of the screen along with a scary sound, then the movie quickly cuts to credits... I had that image stuck in my head for a long time, haven't gone back to that movie since, I was terrified!

I can say The Haunting of Hill House car scene with Nellie is pretty freaking awesome, but I would say that one scene from that show, (not necessarily a jumpscare) is the scene where Luke is hiding under his bed and the ghost - not really sure what "his" name is- is walking around and enters Luke and Nellie's room. I just think that that scene REALLY builds suspense for me and scared the shit out of me even though there isn't really a jump after it.

Another of my favorites is in The Walking Dead season 3 (spoilers) when Axle is killed by the Governor. You know the Governor is getting ready to attack the prison, Rick’s group is aware of the threat, but they just don’t know when. Axle and Carol are outside talking to each other and BAM! Axle is shot right in the fuckin’ face and dropped! Carol has to quickly duck behind his body and shield herself. It’s perfectly timed and scared the hell out of me the first time!

Conjuring 1, with the long shot with the girl banging her head on the closet thing. Then the sister brings her back to bed for only her to point at it, the older sister goes over, with the camera not showing the top of the closet thing, then this loud sound plays showing the witch on the closet. for me the biggest jumpscare is one of the more subtle kinds from crimson peaks with the ghost face making a growling noise as it looks to the heroin in a pitch black room, exposing only it's hand holding the door and it's creepy darth mal face, before shutting it quickly. it's a 2 second spook but to this day when that scene rolls around I have to cover my eyes. I cannot handle it.

Also I just recently watched Goodnight Mommy and I’m not sure if it counts as a jump scare, but the scene with the scissors and the blood [trying not to spoil], also made my heart drop and made me jump w/o Any large buildup of music or loud sounds, just pure tension.
