My son does this leaping move. D3 pitcher (former catcher) currently sitting mid to upper 80s and occasionally clocking 90mph. He has moved down the mound that way for as long as I can remember. I've suggested he work on a traditional stride, but his velo drops dramatically and he's not comfortable with it.

He does it because it’s efficient and he’s super athletic. Wouldn’t change it. ‘Traditional’ doesn’t mean it’s the best

He really reminds me of how Bob Gibson approached pitching. Not as terrifying, but he does have that tiny "jump" forward, shortening the path to the plate. Looks like his stuff just pounds you down.

Disagree on arm being "on time" - he clearly initiates hip rotation early b/c leap and isn't that the metric for arm timing - not foot strike - his lower half rotates before (out of sequence) arm is ready to accept the energy. Also, he is at the very least a little "pushy" on the ball release - he's not fully extended. Could be wrong on last note but watch it again. Also notice his unwind seems low relative to ball speed meaning the arm is taking unnecessary unload vice efficient unwind through lower half. What y'all think?

imo the reason he can keep his rotational force when jumping is because of how his front leg moves. He had a ton of internal rotation so he can hold that leg inward so he is still unwinding everything down into landing Thoughts?

I always thought that maybe he did that jump for timing yes it helped him throw hard but when I saw him if he didn’t jump his front leg would land before he got his arm to 90 degrees and yes Ik he’s an mlb pitcher and he could fix that but he throws gas so why would he change it

From that angle it looks like he’s slightly cross body at front foot strike.
@lancastergerard

Yes he talks about him being internally rotated on front hip. Landing closed (front foot ahead of back) is a good thing

He appears to be gliding into rotation not jumping in my opinion.

yea youre right hes using gravity to guide himself down he just happens to get enough power to leave the mound.
@jc3productions362
@jc3productions362 Год назад
It’s a jump. There’s zero weight on his back foot and it moves forward a decent amount before FFS.
@desertfarmer248
@desertfarmer248 Год назад
@@jc3productions362 hip rotation is bringing his back foot forward. I know because I pitched this way. I never felt like I jumped off the mound. But my back foot was at least 8in from the rubber at release and the other teams would always complain.

@@desertfarmer248 Regardless of what we want to call it it’s not the ideal way for most pitchers to generate velo. It works for him but if I were working on my own mechanics or teaching a kid I wouldn’t tell them to linearly hop like that
@desertfarmer248
@desertfarmer248 Год назад
@@jc3productions362 I agree with that. I don't think it is a easily learned technique. Rather a natural movement some pitchers develop. I don't remember anyone trying to teach me how to do it rather they tried to teach me not to which I felt more like I was falling instead of gliding and driving toward the catcher. I also didn't throw as hard that way. I had to drive using the ground as leverage, but it was slow and definitely not a jump.

I’m sorry but biomechanics don’t ‘work in specific situations’.
