Jumpstart 3rd Grade (PC - 1996) Longplay | Part 1 - No Commentary 

The graphics, gameplay, animation, story - they really just nailed everything with this one. Probably the best in the series in my opinion.

Oh - it's just as clunky as an adult... I think it was just always a challenge at any age!

Not even my brother (who well out of third grade) could get past that part.

I never like the biosphere as a kid. I always preferred the Shrinking Machine, as long and tedious as that can be, at least it was simple and easy to understand

I also remember playing this game when I was little. Back then, I had a computer with a collection of so many games, including this one, Jumpstart 4th grade, Jumpstart 1st, Jumpstart 2nd, Jumpstart World: pet playground, Jumpstart music, etc. Even though Jumpstart 3rd Grade was my favorite game in the Jumpstart series, I never got to finish it.

There’s really just something about it… seems to be a core memory for a lot of people!

My current 3D art style was influenced by this game, no lie.

This game really thinks a third grader knows that an "arroyo" is a dry river bed? How far we've fallen since the 90's.

Oh heck yeah I agree. I used to play these Jumpstart games all the time back in the day starting from the kindergarten 1998 version.

So I've heard this concern before with the original dialogue missing - was this in the 2003 re-release (the box art is awful), or was there some sort of regional difference that accounted for different dialogue?

@@systemthegaming I'm pretty sure it was standard with the re-release. I don't think it had anything to do with region.

@@jdsk800 It's not just the intro. Meeting new characters for the first time, tours, rooms, and certain conversations with Polly were omitted too, and I didn't like it.

I had that version of the game but I didn’t have music playing over Botley briefing the backstory and his confrontation with Polly at the front door.

I had that version too. ...I remember the painting gallery where I drew a kid playing with a toy car, but I was supposed to use the stickers. So I circled him, drew arrows pointing to him, even wrote "LOOK HERE MORON" across the picture and then I realised I was supposed to use the stickers. Then I laughed because of how stupid it looked.

Yeah, I was taken aback by that bc I didn't remember there being an Extra Credit question.......which tells me that I never actually finished this game like I thought! 😅

They probably didn't want to give away the ending.

I really just hoped that after you get all the robots, it would open a new part of the mountain that had a long hallway leading to the room she was in - not just a cutscene to it.. sigh.

@@systemthegaming I feel like for 1996 that's asking for a LOT, especially since this was the first game that moved away from just being a glorified Activity Centre game and into something with an actual story. We did get there, eventually, as I recall in Adventures 5th Grade, you had to travel the different industrial areas that were being targeted and for the final case you travel to the hydro dam to thwart the bad guy

@@systemthegaming you absolutely should! It is a pretty quick game to complete, especially compared to 3rd and 4th Grade, and the minigames aren't too challenging (I mean, it is made for 5th graders from the 90s)

It’s a trip for sure- I spent so much time not even doing missions, but just hanging In the art gallery making stuff and looking back at the paintings. Massive nostalgia hit

You might've played the 2001 version. Didn't add all that much, but it was updated to be a bit more recent.

Depends on the game, Jumpstart 3rd required me to emulate win98 (used virtual box), but the others were hit-or-miss on windows 11

That’s the exact reason I got rolling with this channel. Just wanted to finish games I remember playing when I was younger, but know I never completed (or got close).

To be fair, this game is LONG. You have to rescue 25 robots, which means you have to get 100 clues, bonus points if you're playing on lower difficulty levels, have to go through the Wheel of Invention game each time, AND recharge the batteries every 2-3 robots. That's not even including all the dialogue, which there is also a LOT. The only JumpStart game that I finished when I was a kid was 5th Grade, and that game was actually pretty neatly streamlined in comparison to 3rd and 4th Grade, especially when it came to travel between areas (note: I did not learn about the quick travel system in 4th grade until I was in my 20s)

OH that's super interesting. I had no idea. I did a little digging and my only thought might be -- if that was a version released in a spanish-speaking market with very different schooling structures (vs. just in-language in the U.S. for example).

@@ZzxTheNeptuneSays1337 It must because it says on Wikipedia that 6 known versions exist including 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.1c

I checked 1.2, and it actually uses the old Knowledge Adventure logo. I'm pretty sure the version that uses the newer logo is V1.4.

Nope! You’ll have to run in a windows xp or lower environment. Take a look at setting up a virtual box. There are a few tutorials floating around - I might get around to making one later.

It might run in dosbox. Otherwise emulators if ya have an old 95/98 disk around.

Not that I’m aware of - unfortunately I had to go through the process of running a virtual machine of winxp to get it working. Wasn’t the most user friendly experience on the planet, but that was the only way I was able to make it work.
