Today, June 22, is the birthday of Brian Sadowsky. He would be 53 but died in the 2016 Excel Industries attack in Hesston, KS. Taken from his wife, son, parents, and 4 siblings, Brian was caring, loving, and hard working. A natural class clown with a biting sense of humor, Brian was also accepting, trustworthy, and reliable.
Brian was a rabid Pittsburgh Steelers & KU fan who also loved NASCAR, but he would always drop whatever he was doing to help a friend in need. Friends described him as a kind soul who was “a teddy bear once you got to know him.” As a recovering addict, Brian could be a little “rough around the edges,” but he had been clean and sober for many years and was credited with helping many friends conquer their addictions as well.
Active with the Newton HOW Foundation and Narcotics Anonymous, Brian worked as a liaison and provided support for other members. Witnesses to the shooting described Brian helping one of the wounded when he was fatally shot. As a friend and co-worker said, “…that was him…he couldn’t NOT help people. It was in his nature.”
The shooter was served with a protective order while at work. 90 minutes later, he killed his first victim. He ultimately killed 3 people, random co-workers, senselessly killed because a dangerous, violent man was allowed to possess a gun despite an imminent threat. An additional 14 people were injured in the attack including 5 who were in critical condition. A responding officer killed the attacker.
