New York is the hugest city of the USA which is suggested as one of the biggest world cities. It has long history and I'd like to tell you some interesting facts about it. The city was founded in the beginning of the XVII century by the Dutch colonizers. And up to 1664 it was called New Amsterdam. In 1626 the governor of New Netherlands Peter Minuit redeemed the island of Manhattan and the settlement on the island renamed into New Amsterdam. In 1664 the English conquered New Amsterdam and renamed it into New York to the honor of English King Jacob II (the Duke of York). New York became the first capital of the USA in September 1788. Now it's the important financial, political, economical and cultural centre of the world.
