I discuss the events in which I will be participating in the month of June and the books I hope to read:
June is PRIDE Month. I will continue my deep read of the poetry and prose of the great Adrienne Rich, a prolific writer of poetry and prose and one of my all-time favorite poets. Additionally, I will read a newish biography of her.

I like the idea of Pile of Possibilities over a tbr. Sounds like a great collection of things for June! I might have to join in for the Ulysses read along because I've been thinking about reading it. As far as Westerns go, I'm by no means experienced, but I could suggest looking into Pity the Beast by Robin McLean. She wrote it as a feminist Western and centered the characters that often find themselves relegated to the sidelines. She took some of her creative inspiration from William Faulkner, too. I read it a couple years ago and found it wryly funny and curiously written. She also included small sections of "Mule thoughts" because we never get to hear from the beasts of burden that feature so prominently in these stories!
@BookChatWithPat8668
@BookChatWithPat8668 4 месяца назад
Oh that’s a great suggestion, Tristan! Thank you! I was also thinking about maybe looking into Lucky Red by Claudia Craven, a newish book from maybe the last year, also with a very feminist perspective. We’ll see. If you’re interested in joining the Ulysses read-along, check out Greg’s channel at Another Bibliophile Reads. There’s info there for joining the Discord. Hi Pat! You've got so much good stuff here and good stuff going on! Thank you for the info about Adrienne Rich's new biography - I've always wanted to learn more about her as well. I own a copy of your newer edition of Ulysses - I was using it in grad school in the late 90's so the "newer" edition has been out for quite a while. Zane Grey was my grandmother's favorite western author - my grandmother lived to be 94 and I remember her talking about how much she loved Zane Grey. Fortunately you've already read Ulysses, otherwise along with Dune June would be a trying time. I've only read the first Dune book, liked it, but not well enough to go on. I enjoy the films though including Lynch's. The great film maker and comic book writer Alejandro Jodorowsky planned a 9 hour Dune, which was story boarded by the equally great French comic book artist Moebius, and would've included a soundtrack by Pink Floyd and starring Salvador Dali and Orson Welles. Giger designed some of the early sets and costumes which were later used by Ridley Scott for Alien. Unable to make the film Jodorowsky wrote what he imagined Dune would be in graphic novels like The Incal and the remarkable The Metabarons. I read Ulysses one summer between semesters. I was curious about it, having read Joyce's other books (minus Finnegan's Wake). I'd read journals and had annotated edition for reference, none of which helped in understanding the book. It wasn't until years later when I read Anthony Burgess's Re-Joyce and Vladamir Nabokov's lectures on Literature and his chapter on Ulysses that I wished I'd known about those books at the time. What I advise those that ask how to approach Ulysses, I tell them not to bother reading Homer (if they hadn't done so already) because it wouldn't help them at all. Nor to fall into the trap speculating over the meaning inside each chapter. Instead to read it like a narrative poem, even to read parts out loud. And to remember that death plays an important part in the story. Bloom has lost a son, and Stephen is guilt ridden over the death of his mother. He refused to kneel and make a prayer at her deathbed. Dead son and mother, respectively, come into the characters minds throughout the narrative and it's interesting to see what triggers the emotion, the memory. A beautiful book.

Thank you for the info about the planned version of DUNE by Jodorowsky. Fascinating stuff. I think that I need to follow my gut. This is probably not the June for me to read Dune. This will be my third reading of Ulysses, but the last one was a long time ago. The last time I read it, it was one of the most powerful reading experiences of my life. I was, as I said, reading it for a Joyce/Yeats seminar in grad school, but I felt like I was living it in a way I'd never felt before. I remember that I actually dreamt about it. Very intense experience. I think that was, in part, because, as you say, it is about death, and at that time of my life, that summer, I was profoundly grieving the deaths of both my father and my brother. Finnegan's Wake is the only work of Joyce that I have not read--and haven't even felt tempted to read it! Joyce aside, how are you doing? I was just thinking about you, and here you are. Hope you are doing well....

@@BookChatWithPat8668 Good morning, Pat. It's interesting about your dreams, their intensity, and the impact the book had on you due to the deaths of your loved ones. Makes perfect sense to me. There is a deep humanity to this book, exemplified in Leopold Bloom himself, a kind man, a Jewish man, whose actions are more Christian than his fellow men and women who are Christians. I thought about him at the funeral for a friend, where Stephen's father is also present. The moment arouses memories of his son, Rudy, but also those of his father, who committed suicide The latter is rudely referenced by someone in there, maybe it was Stephen's father, I don't clearly remember. His inner monologue is evident of his caring for other people, even animals, like that poor hungry dog. He is aware of the anti-antisemitism around him, but it doesn't make him bitter. He is also aware of Molly's infidelity, but doesn't blame her. . A remarkable literary creation. You mentioned that westerns were on the June list. I don't know if you've read Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, but the Judge and the Kid, are the moral antithesis to Bloom and Stephen. The Judge is brilliant, but morally vacant, just like Bloom is his opposite. I haven't made videos because for over a month I've been in the process of selling off half my book collection. For the past few weeks I've been moving to a smaller place which has stairs. Books, as you know are difficult to move. A local bookseller has been buying my books. Difficult, but necessary to do. Once I'm settled in I'll return to making videos.
