www.viz.com/junji-ito
All story/book names are shown throughout the video, typically on the corner of their respective pages or chapter arts. If you’re looking for a title, pause the video and check there.
Majority of music used comes from ‘World of Horror’, a game available on steam.
store.steampowered.com/app/91...
(it’s really good, I have around 50 hours in it. I also made a FUNKe Study on this game over at F2NKe)
In case you’re wondering, I still intend to make more “low production” funke study videos that aren’t as thoroughly animated as this one was. I’d rather separate my videos into “review” type studies and “essay” type studies than have totally different titles for each kind of video (RIP FUNKtv). As time passes I just get more interested in original-production content so you’ll see these heavily animated videos show up now and then in the future.

Hopefully more people start refining the length of their videos. Wanting to watch something but seeing its runtime be so long is overwhelming and just leads to me skipping through it or thinking ‘wtf am I doing with my life rn🗿’ Sometimes the content/writing quality does justify the runtime, but they’re pretty rare exceptions (ppl like noah caldwell gervais and action button)

I really love the unique way FUNKe animated his hands. By seperating and connecting his hands and arms he made it look like he had 4 hands. 2 that are inside his sleeves and 2 rayman like floating arms. Then he could pose them diffrently or connect them togeter. It was masterfully done and super creative

I can't remember the name of it, but my favorite Junji Ito story is probably the least supernatural one. It's the one about the girl who's forced to babysit this little boy, but doesn't want to because she thinks it's uncool. He'd always cry about everything and it got on her nerves, and everyday she's push him down, or accidentally hit him with a ball, hoping he would stop wanting to be around her, but it never worked. One day she kicked a ball into a yard with an aggressive dog and made him go get it, the boy getting mauled in the process. He lived, but the family moved away soon after. Years later, once she's an adult, she meets the boy at a bar who remembers her fondly, seemingly forgetting everything she had done to him, yet he still has the scar from the dog. They end up dating, he knocks her up, and they have a kid together. However, one day, he doesn't come back from work. This was his revenge, leaving her with the kid, the kid that looks exactly like he did all those years back. The final few pages are her lamenting him, hating him for what he did, and how the child reminds her of him, he cries just like he did, how annoying that was. The final panel is her dressed up as she was in the beginning of the story, like a child, her hair done up in pigtails, calling her son by the name of his father, the boy she abused, implying that she'll relive those events with her own son.

One thing I like about Junji Ito's endings is that typically there is "discovery" by the outside world. It's not just something supernatural that's "invisible" to all except those it's affecting, but it's something physical that others are able to witness ... But then the story ends before the larger implications of that discovery start being pressed.
@marslara
@marslara Год назад
Whenever I see mentions of Ito's work I'm shocked there isn't more media taking advantage of this kind of genre. The "unknown" horror like eldritch. Or just the uncanny which makes you scared but you can't say why. I feel like bird box kind of had it by not showing the creatures and same with Arrival or Annihilation just by being outside of human understanding. I think it's a really cool concept that more media should explore.
@mimszanadunstedt441
@mimszanadunstedt441 Год назад
Thats because horror is in the implications. What it suggests is secretly the norm of the universe. And humanity would rather not know. They want simple to assure themselves they are safe because they are in control. But their reality is entirely illusion.

@@angelerror4086 I think it's technically what it's called, but Lovecraft horror that claims the genre tends to only show things that are disturbing to look at most of the time not necessarily exploring the concept of fear. I want to take a moment to appreciate how impressive the page turning scenes are. That you actually modeled every page turn in Blender for the small detail that you can see the next page as it turns, control the pace of each page turn for suspense, control the camera angles, and that incredible paper texture, is just superb. More than that, it gives the viewer the actual vibe of physically turning each page. Surely a ton of work instead of doing it in after-effects or something; but the result is absolutely worth it I'm sure.

I dunno what unnerved me more, the very methodical way you explained and analyzed Junji Ito's work or the disconnected hands and arms having their own seperate animations from one another. It's actually such a really nice touch despite how seemingly minor it is, it correlates nicely with how horrifying Ito's stories are imo, since a lot of them happen in mundane locations. It's also a very good showcase of animation in general, it's kind of fucking nuts.

The thing I love about Ito’s stories are they almost always feel like a random silly thought he must’ve had but the way he depicts and tells the story really hit home his talent for the macabre. There’s an episode of Manben, Urasawa Naoki’s show about mangaka, in which Ito is the focus of an episode and I roughly remember him joking about how something he was drawing was unrealistic (it was the story of the girl made up of layers) and it really hit home how his stories work, his concepts are silly but they remind me of that child like sense of horror where the logic doesn’t matter at all, a giant floating balloon shaped like your head that can mimic you with the sole goal of hanging you is really sill but the way he presents it is genuinely creepy.

i know everyone's already said this a hundred times over for nearly a week, but i love the subtle cleverness you play around with when it comes to the character design. simple design choices resulting in complex behaviours is one of my favourite things in character design, and your character's lack of neck and wrists leads to so many cool visual tricks and silly gags. and the way it's animated makes sense too! of course a character who has floating hands would rest their hands differently from their arms, or rest one while gesticulating with the other! it leads to so many interesting and fun visuals that i found myself having to sometimes rewind this video because my detail-hungry autistic brain was so enamored by the animation that i only half-processed the actual words being said. and i know you've said that the grungy visuals were mainly just for this one video, but i certainly wouldn't mind more of it in the future! to make sure this comment at least mentions the topic of the video; this has unironically convinced me to get into junji ito oh, n that was an immaculate outro gag, haven't laughed that hard in a few days lmao

God you're videos are a 5 star, 5 course, MEAL every time they come with all the surface level fun all then looking at the entire iceberg of your jokes and visuals man and how you always have these multilevel jokes of the videos having to do with the topic and/or BEING the topic and then having a say on the topic by just having the visuals play with it. Also they're good

I immediately felt like something about the animation was off, but I couldn't pinpoint it for several minutes. I love how the hands and arms act like separate limbs in this one!

I love macabre endings. Literature wise, it’s a breath of fresh air. Lesson wise, it gives the consistent message that not all stories end happily. Not all end horribly. Some just end as relief for everyone. Say a character slowly descends into madness due to a set of events, yeah the ending isn’t good, but the worst is over.

Great video as always Funke. The way you disconnected the hands and sleeves to make it seem as if Bomby had two different sets of hands to emphasize and express different things was cool. Glad Craig's made a comeback voiced by none other than Grotle. The ending had me in stitches, it was just stupid funny. Hope you're doin' well, love to see your continued evolution in animation and video creation, and can't wait for whatever's next!

Dude I'm blown away by your output. You have such an expressive style that you do amazingly. Every. Single. Time. It's so high quality too, the sound design like the clothes ruffling and the pages moving, the music, even your voice. The animation, so stylized, smaller framerate giving it more of its own identity. The models that you make and the shading on them. Your script and editing too! Its all so entertaining, I'm definitely excited to see more of your work in the future :)))

Great insights. I think Ito’s flaws are a consequence of his greatest strength: he understands that the scariest thing is the unknown. His works always maintain a sense of mystery. I’ve read Amigara fault so many times. Who? Why? How? I’ll never know. There’s barely anything to speculate on. And that makes it endlessly terrifying and unsettling.
