As a city boy I can tell you that we all secretly know that the people who feed us deal with reality at a much higher level that we ever could. Thanks for the reality lesson 101!
Another story like yours from my friend farmer:we were baling hay whith his 436 NH baler alongside an old fence in a field;a ''T"" bar post cut by the fourwheelers that passes in the field went through the baler ,bent the hammer and knife and busted out the left side panel...junk baler like yours...he had to finish the field (and the hay season )with the round baler!
It happens... BIL was telling me about a rock going through one of the new Single Tine Separator (STS) Deere combines a few years back-- yeah, the name fit because there was only a single tine left in the machine when the rock came out the back-- it spit all the other tines out with it. Luckily we don't have rocks in the fields here on the Gulf Coast-- you don't even hit gravel til you dig down about 20 feet. At my BIL's place in Indiana he's got some BIG rocks in the field. REALLY gotta watch picking corn and harvesting soybeans! BIL told me another story from when he was a kid or young guy... a neighbor had a new Deere combine, maybe a 6600 or 6620, might have been older, can't recall. Anyway, he was combining in a wet fall and buried the machine. Got the big tractor down there and chained off to the rear axle of the combine, and started pulling hard to pull the combine out, and the combine broke in half. Guy went home and shot himself. Stuff can be replaced, people can't. Keep it insured and do whatcha gotta do. Later! OL J R :)
onelonleyfarmer i know this video is really old but we have three old 4x4 balers and something just like this happened to one and we got her straightend out eventually but we had two more balers going in the mean time so it is nice having a spare but you made the right choice with the new new holland. from what i have seen they are very reliable. i want one soo bad but they dont make a 4x4.
Silage contractor near us went to forage grass near the sea. Rake man heard a bang so he went out and there it was, a cubic foot stone lucky he was the one who found it and not the self propelled forager. No one could understand how the mower didn't get damaged.
Sorry to hear about the loss good thing for insurance my house got struck by lightning so I feel you kinda with dealing with insurance. Glad you got another baler sucks its so far away.
Looks like a design defect. The baler is missing a sensor for hard / heavy / solid material. For the cost of the machine ultrasound or radar would be cheap to add. But then they wouldn't sell as many balers. Rocks in fields it'll never happen !
G'day Lonley. Why a New Holland. Was price the deciding factor or did it do a better job than anything else in it's price bracket. as usual a good vid.
I just fixed knife damage in my Hesston small square baler caused by an old horseshoe that the rake must have pulled into the windrow. There hasn't been a horse in these fields since before WWII.
Holy crap, There isnt enough left of that baler to use it for parts. I would go with the used baler and new tractor option, You can NEVER have too many tractors!
@PierreaSweedieCat it was odd that it did not break a shear bolt i have broken them before and no big deal to put a new one in.it is not a fun time rite now but i will get buy ok.
Wouldn't thought those tines would have picks up that rock An surly would have thought that the shear bolt would have broke before cuasing that much damage Sometimes life just sucks I feel your pain though I just spun a rod bearing in one of my tractors
OUCH that looks expencive! i hope you have some kind of insurance on your equiptment to cover such accidents. damn that sure must have thrown a wrench in your day
Seen someone mentioned keeping the rock. Reminds me of a man who got speared against a bale by his tractor and silage grab while cutting the plastic wrap off, they had to surgically remove it from around his pelvis. Don't worry he was back on the tractor in a week ;) the paramedics visited him and he asked for the spike back, they asked if he was going to keep it as a memento. Hes said no I want to put it back on the grab. Lol
this guy is a screen farmer lol he does not understand that even if i did walk the 2700 acres you can still miss rocks and sticks and old chunks of iron that where left from other farmers..
And even if you did walk all the fields you still wouldn't know you caught every stone, where I work they can't even be trusted to bring all of the cows out of the fields, and they're a little bit bigger than stones. And if the stone was in the middle of the row and not visible you can hardly go around checking all of it. But anyway, good luck with your baling and hope you get it in OK.
Shatted jumping desiccated carnubillations! Well, you got my sympathy & empathy. I'm in hard times too, so can't help. I can teach you some nice real French swearwords, if you think that'll help. This certainly sucks. Hope the Insur'ce comes through. Maybe you can make 50 cents of the salvage value? I can't understand it. I thought all these big machines had "safeties" which would cause a shut down before a rock did that much damage. Mind you, the size of that rock, that's a paving stone!
YUPP rock paper scissors, rock won. I'd paint letters on it , this rock killed a giant and cost a $100,000 to replace. Wow really sucks , need some kind of rock finder when planting. Usually they eat your mower don't they.
You are kidding right? Are you a real farmer? I know it's impossible to walk your finds and find all the debris especially if it's leased land. You are in a dream world my friend
