Join me as we encounter vintage items that might not be to everyone's taste. Possessed doll's head - scooped out tortoise - demonic sideboard-buffet - ancient chair with hellish stink.
But a beautiful statue of Jesus in a Gothic case is there to protect us, plus a cuddly teddy bear collection to shoo the darkness away :)
Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

You brought up an interesting thought. You mentioned how you were attached you were to some of your personal treasures. Have you ever thought about using your “spirit box” in one of these shops? I would start with that Haitian chair. It has a story to tell.

Wow! So much wonderful info and video that was so fun! However my favorite was the showing of the private collection of yours and I am with you on the capture and caging of the animals! I didn't like the turtle much but, it was a special sentiment from your mom and I absolutely love all of your sense of humor. My mom had dolls that she had since she was a very young girl and just passed away in June so I received all 3 and they are very beautiful and antique. 1 is a Margaret Obrien and the other 2, no names but have the complete bendable parts and can't remember what that is called, may certainly have value but who knows. Thank you sir, once again!

I liked the clocks and teddy bears. The bears looked like the original style and may be worth something. I don’t like mounted animals. When I worked in a zoo, I had heard about using roadkill. But, at the same time I was told that the Victorian practices were still being used in certain countries. It’s wrong and inhumane. Twenty years ago the US government was blocking imports and smuggling of endangered animal products. They confiscated so much of it, they were able to create suitcases of samples which were then distributed to zoos, museums, etc. across the US to educate visitors about the impact this activity has on the environment. Our zoo had two of these cases. I used to do lessons with them. have no idea of what is happening now. Niffy

Hi Oddie! I used to have alittle bear collection only have one now man by Charleen Kinser Desins, Reg.# 552 PA . I had no clue it was a designer bear I just luved him. He's brown, he's 2 foot tall, 2 ft wide, with leather paws & feet and is jointed. I got him at a thrift store for $5. dollars I think but on line I think the bear is worth $1, 000. or so, haven't looked on line about it in a long time. I know the nice lady designer has past. The bears in the case you showed me look like Steif Bears and if so are worth ALOT of money and are very collectible. Ranging from over a hundred to almost $3,000. There is one you might like to see! It's a Stief Dimond Bear selling for $35,000. ! The eyes are diamonds, nose is gold ect. I wonder how much the Bears there were selling for?

Hello Wendy, they weren't shrunken, full sized - four of them (3 Maori and 1 European)in a large old draw in the dark recesses of the museum, probably from the early 19th century.

Some of the clocks were beautiful, but the English "Grandfather" clock is a real masterpiece - I'd love to have it. I also liked the first Edwardian style ceiling lamp shown by Oddie. Some of the Teddies could prove to be quite valuable, especially if made by the "Steif" company - they usually have a button with the name "Steif" pinned on one ear, but the very earlier ones didn't have them and are difficult to recognize, but they can be extremely valuable for collectors. That "hunting cabinet" has fantastic carvings, but is far too evil looking for my taste, weird !!! Most probably made for some occultist, wouldn't surprise me. My wife and I have many antique artefacts and have just bought a late 19th century German sewing machine with its transportation box, in quite good condition, for just € 8,- at a flea market near Hamburg ! Of course, I had to lug it back to the car and my arm got longer and longer on the way, but was worth it. It will look nice on our cabinet - which definitely hasn't got any 👹 carvings on it, believe me !!! Wonderful tour of a beautiful antique shop, Oddie, loved every moment ! 😘

"See you later, piggy" LOL! :-D Those tusks on the boars are known as "cutters" as they are razor sharp and can cut clean down to the bone. They are very efficient eaters and will eat just about anything. Nasty things, indeed. We have a feral hog problem here in Texas where I live and they can do a devastating amount of damage to farmer's crops, gardens and even golf courses. The ladies' necessaire is lovely and the embroidered chair's "scent" can be easily fixed with cleaning and a few good sprays with some Febreeze. :-) The statue of Jesus is absolutely beautiful.My mother who is a devout Catholic would absolutely love it :-) The teddy bear collection is absolutely adorable! :-) The little fellow does look like Paddington and I have a little bear that looks similar. I really like the jockey beer stein too. :-) The Black Forest cuckoo clocks are so neat! My parents had one when I was growing up and my father's mother (who was German) brought it over just after the turn of the 20th century when she married my grandfather. My husband had a Six Million Dollar Man action figure too when he was a child and his mother still has it. I really like Odette's Smurf and the story of her working in the factory. I have a small plush toy horse that my grandmother gave me when I was a child. When I checked the company that made it, it's been discontinued. I was lucky to find another one on eBay and plan to put it in a shadow box. I have one taxidermy item that was passed down to me from my great-grandmother. It's a coat made from a coyote that had been causing trouble on the ranch, eating the hens and hassling the newborn calves. Unfortunately, it had to be harvested at that time as re-locating it in those days wasn't possible. I repurposed the coat and turned it into a messenger bag. Men love it. Women are curious about it and children are absolutely fascinated by it. I only bring it out in the wintertime and it stays in cold storage. Like you, I'm not big on zoos and I don't hunt or go fishing, either. Just not my thing. This shop was great! :-D

Thank you for the neat stories about your and Odette's youth. My first car was a 1972 Chevy Malibu Chevelle with a 350 and a four barrel carburetor. The car was old when I got it in High School, but I loved it. My mom had it towed when I went off to college, broke my heart. I had a friend who did taxidermy to birds. She gave me a cardinal's head and an owl's foot. I still have the owl's foot. I loved the Smurfs when I was a kid, but it always seemed odd that Smurfette was the only girl. I wondered if she was lonely for other girl smurfs to play with.

Thanks again for taking us on one of your junk shop rambles--always fun! And I have to agree with you about taxidermy. To preserve specimens for science is, well, OK; but I've never liked the idea of animals being killed just to turn them into décor. Stuffed animals always have this deflated look; no blood pressure, no air in their lungs. Oh, and I got a kick out of that animation you added to that doll's head. Now I want it, too.

Thanks for sharing your experience with taxidermy. It's really interesting to hear more about how your view has been shaped through the years. I was too afraid to comment this in the last video, but when my VERY beloved toy poodle died of old age, we had him freeze dried. I know everyone who knows probably thinks I'm crazy for it, but I couldn't bear the thought of him rotting away all alone. I hope he and I will always be together, even when we're dead. It brings tears to my eyes to think of him even now. It probably sounds like something out of one of your killer profiles, but I'm so glad to be able to pet him and talk to him, and since he was like my shadow in life, I don't feel like he would be happy away from me. I love your work, and again, thank you for sharing.
@ObsoleteOddity
@ObsoleteOddity 5 лет назад
You loved your dog and he wasn't killed just for taxidermy; he was absolutely cherished and I understand you couldn't bear to be parted from him. If the act of preserving him brings comfort to you, then it is a totally positive thing. I forgot to share this: On the first day of starting work at the museum, the head taxidermist pointed to a chair and told me I could use that, but to gently shoo his curled up cat off, as it was aged. Well I tried a few 'pss' pss' ...nothing.... nudged the chair a bit...still nothing. It was only until I touched it that I realised it wasn't living; it looked so convincingly 'asleep'

Febreeze for the chair?? It’s lovely. I actually liked the monstrous sideboard. Gargoyles are there to protect. Wouldn’t be able to get it in my 1904 house but would have been lovely in the huge 1907 one. Really enjoy it when you share some of your personal items with us. Shame on you though for never naming your turtle 😏. When he looks at you, he’s sayin, please Dad, give me a name.” Never did like the notion of taxidermy. I did homebound for a number of years while I was teaching. These were children who, for varying reasons, couldn’t attend regular classes so teacher would be assigned to teach them after regular school hours. Anyway, in at least half of the homes I’d visit in our rural area deer heads were hanging on the wall. Although not a hunter myself (shudder) I don’t have a problem with it here. People hunt for food for their families. Ok with that. Wow! Do I remember the Bionic Man and Woman!!! Smurfs were more my daughter’s generation but I loved them too. We still have Gargamel’s house around here somewhere! I’ve rambled, as usual. Apologies but these vids of the ...not junk...rather junque 😉shops bring back great memories!! Thank you

My grandmother wanted to throw away my grandfathers collection of beermugs (we're bavarian) he had made himself. They're beautifully carved and with paintings on them. Some even have little games in the lids. I want them and she doesn't understand why I, a 20 year old, would want that. It's just something about antique things or generally things from an older time that makes me feel excited and at home.

Thanks so much for the wonderful video, Oddie. if my mom lived in that area, she would buy every single clock in the store. she has 6 clocks currently. I think for your turtle friend, his name should be Obbie Turtle

It seems you post videos on my work days. I wait with bated breath for a day off to watch! The "make-up" bag looks the size and shape of a seeing machine case. However, my grandmother's never carried their machines from place to place. They were kept in a sewing machine table. I loved "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman!" The Merker thing made me thing of baking. But the label is definitely medical. Great video!

All the old clocks reminded me of my dad who passed away last October. He was a great tinkerer and would find antique clocks, get them working and then sell them so he could buy another broken clock to work on. There were a lot of beautiful items in that shop. I would give my right eye for "the monstrosity". It reminds me of the fairy and goblin paintings by Brian Froud. I loved it SO much!

I had to sit in a room full of taxidermy once, in a university. I felt cold, really uncomfortable, but had to stay, for hours. I hated every second.

When i was in forces, i once saw a Gorillas hand as an ashtray terrible ,but like you i was fascinated by taxidermy. I owned a human skeleton for 6 yrs and she happily lived on the sofa, she was given to me by a local branch of the ST John ambulance. She was sold to a doctor in the end. And i agree with what you say about the animals. I had a tortoise as a child once called Houdini, and he escaped true story.

Love the amazing antique items. Such amazing things... Especially Those beautiful clocks! For myself, I love the zoo, but only if the animals cannot be released into the wild. In the one near me, many are rescued animals that have never been wild and would not know how to live if they were released. The saddest one is a bald eagle that was shot in the shoulder of her wing and the bone shattered. She cannot fly so they keep her in the zoo.

This has been an unusually pleasant surprise. My wife and I love the creepy stuff. In addition, I had the Six Million Dollar Man as well. Btw: Led Majors is from Middlesboro Kentucky. In fact, my wife and I grew up in the same county that he grew up in, just about ten miles from where I live. God bless. Hope that everyone has a nice day.

Anybody apart from me fancied the grey tabby cat model near the ivory satin platform shoes with ankle straps (not that I notice shoes eh 😜). Is the huge press with demons on it Flemish? I have friends with this type of furniture, they have large properties so the furniture suits location. The empty Smurff Factory 😱 What a history it's had, from blue gnomes to ganja greenhouse (in what order? 🤣), then Triumph motorcycles, the latter brings back memories! Thanks so much for the entertainment, interesting and thought provoking as usual. Xxx

My grandma had a grandfather clock for as long as I remember. My parents have it now, and faithfully wind it on Sundays. The chimes need to be cleaned because some of them seem to have pneumonia, but I love that clock!

My 3rd year in college, I was talking to a couple of friends about past adventures, often involving controlled substances (I don't imbibe but have an interest in psychology so was happy to listen). The young man told of a party where someone spiked his coke with acid; before he realized what was going on he went home, turned on the TV, and played Smurfball! He had trouble with some of the details of the game but apparently made a pretty good showing.

Everything was absolutely gorgeous. The Triumph sure brought back memories. I don't know what year it was built but in the 1970s we had a couple of friends with one and it had been restored and my husband had a Datsun Fairlady he restored. Life was grand 🚗

Smurfs and Weed how come nobody else can see the connection ? I thoroughly enjoyed the tour . I must say the items are very reasonably priced at the store. The first time we took Luke to the museum, the only time in fact , he cried his heart out . He was about 5 and couldn't understand why we had to kill the lions and put them in display. It took him a long time to recover . Great tour as always Oddie but don't you owe us a live chat session ?
@ObsoleteOddity
@ObsoleteOddity 5 лет назад
It's true. lol - the growers had a sense of humour. I was the opposite as a kid, I loved the stuffed animals - would play truant from school to spend hours in the same museum where I studied taxidermy. My bedroom had lots of preserved birds and animals. It was also a northern England thing, was popular back then. Re. live chat, possibly for Halloween - road trip first! Yay!
