In Junk Super Famicom Can it be Repaired? Scruffy Looking Mods we will revisit this SFC I picked up from my hunt at the Tokyo City Flea Market and see if we can get the video output working again.

Scuffy!Scruffy!! You did it! Possibly one of the coolest guys to watch bring "junk" back to life. Since you did bring this old Super Famicom back from the dead, I advise a Super Ghouls and Ghosts paint scheme. Blue and purple with hints of red and transparent (if they make such a case) with a green led glow. You're the man, Scruffy! Thanks for being here and with such cool cap' notes. Love to see a case refurb video on this, but customized to be really Scruffy Looking!

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed this one. Bringing em back is great but the real fun is customization😉 Great ideas on the super ghouls and ghosts theme. 👻

After watching this I definitely feel like I should buy a soldering machine one day. I enjoy opening my consoles and cleaning them as well. And SFC RGB on a PVM is beautiful!

Go for it! Replacing the caps isnt so difficult and if you like cleaning your consoles soldiering becomes even more satisfying 👌 and PVM RGB is a thing of beauty 😍📺️

This is the kind of videos that do help the retro world: demystify recapping and show what to do when not everything goes according to plan.
@ScruffyLookinRGB
@ScruffyLookinRGB Год назад
Thanks for the kind words much appreciated. Things almost always detour from the plan😉 Have you ever come across an old sfc with the same issues?

I was so chuffed that I knew exactly what was wrong with this SFC the moment I saw the video output, literally 12 seconds in. 😁 I've got over a dozen "for parts" SFC consoles which--almost to a one--are actually in perfect working order, they just needed the video output caps replaced. Quick way to diagnose this for people who don't have a PVM (Because a modern TV will usually just say 'no signal' and give a blank screen if the sync is bad enough) is to hook up the RF; The RF modulator's video signal isn't affected by the condition of that cluster of caps! If you get no or a garbled video signal, but RF is fine, then 100% it's that cluster of caps, center rear, by the AV Multi Out. 😌 SO MANY 'no picture' for-parts SNES and SFC consoles are just a buck in parts and a couple-few minutes' labor from working. Keep these beauties out of the e-waste stream! 😁👍 (And when I say "almost all" of the broken SFC consoles in my care; Even the couple that had more serious issues, like a bad PPU, bad CPU, or damaged PCB traces _still_ had those bad caps preventing good video output!)

Well said! Unfortunately not many people have no idea on how to replace the caps. Hope we can save more of these beauties from ending up in the landfill.

Nice, so far all of the cheap "junk" SFCs I've bought have worked fine, but they make for good recap practice. Nothing wrong with replacing the surface-mount caps with through-hole ones with bent legs either, supposedly they're more robust and are recommended by people like Luke from Console5 anyway. One thing I'd like to try is putting a SFC board inside a clear SNES case since I no longer have my childhood SNES. But I guess I'd have to find some 3D printed switches and find some way to mod the controller ports, since the clear shells don't come with those.
@ScruffyLookinRGB
@ScruffyLookinRGB Год назад
I have also found the same. I would say I have had a 90% success rate when buying junk sfcs i think these early units use the wrong value capacitors. That is definitely an interesting idea to bring the two versions together 🤔✨

If you're still looking for suggestions, you could try Odd Tinkering's method for de-yellowing the system's shell.

I don't think the caps cost me more than 600 - 700yen and the unit was part of a bundle of things so it may have been less than 500 yen. So i spent about 1000 yen total plus my preciouse time. 😉Hope you like the new paint Scheme i go with👍
