Junkers Ju 87 Stuka 

Lol. Yes it really dove on it's last mission. I guess it's target was the ocean floor. Honestly it's kind of sad to see these planes at the bottom of the ocean like that and know that they can't be enjoyed beyond being a diving attraction. I would like to see one of these in person without the need for diving gear and actually hear that engine roar, and see it fly. I've seen some world war 2 aircraft, but never saw a B17, P51 mustang,or a stuka. I've wanted to see those three for a very long time.

I could be wrong but I read its the dive bomber capable of diving 90 degrees and recover. It even had a feature that pulled up in case the pilot backed out.

@@WinstonSmith1997 The Stuka had an automatic turn up initiated by pilot with a defined angle. The Allies found out about the angle and shot down the Stukas as they returned upstairs. Luftwaffe found out about this an alternated the angle so that Allies had mir difficulties in shooting them down while going up. The automatic had to be as the G-force in the turning is so heavy that no blood is received by the eyes and front part of brain. A lot of pilots had mysterious crashes, some comrades thought that these pilots got crazy due to the constant effect of G-force damaging brain. On the other side the Stukas were a precise weapon, knocking out anything the Allies had, even bid ships. The point was getting close as possible to the target to get exact hits. Like on Maxim Gorki Fort Sewastopol, where the biggest guns Germans had shot without smashing it, but Stukas finished it in few rounds.

Die Erfahrung mit anderen Bergungsversuchen, vor allem in Salzwasser, haben gezeigt, dass fast alle Artefakte beim Versuch sie aus dem Wasser zu heben, in ihre Einzelteile zerfallen. Besonders Aluminium(-legierungen) halten der korrosiven Wirkung des Salzwassers kaum stand. Oft sehen wir bei solchen Wracks lediglich die Hülle, die durch den Auftrieb des Wassers und Bewuchs zusammen gehalten wird. Trotzdem ein faszinierendes Video, dass auf seine Weise dieses Flugzeug erhält. 🇬🇧 Perfectly intact? Experience with other salvage attempts, especially in salt water, has shown that almost all artefacts disintegrate into their individual parts when you try to lift them out of the water. Especially aluminium (alloys) hardly withstand the corrosive effect of salt water. Often all we see of such wrecks is the hull, held together by the buoyancy of the water and fouling. Nevertheless, a fascinating video that in its own way preserves this aircraft.

​@caocaoli1exposed aluminium certainly corrodes, aluminium is a highly reactive metal & in an 'electrolytic' environment (ie salt water) it positively fizzes, but anodised or painted surfaces are protected.

I wouldn’t necessarily agree. The airframe is mostly aluminium and it still is remarkable condition. It isn’t buried so a gentle and slow hoist shouldn’t result in it disintegrating. Worse airframes have been rebuilt to airworthy condition albeit mostly with new metal but it could be displayed as found.

I totally agree, and given the state of the plane, I don't think it's too late. However, I doubt the money will be found to restore the aircraft.

Sadly it’s not really possible to do that after prolonged saltwater immersion and best left as is.

@@mer2705 The plane was flying for the Italian Air Force and was shot down while bombing Yugoslavian ships anchored off of Croatia in 1941. The crew survived.

I think some historical groups in Croatia may still be working on a future salvage. Yes, it should come out. It flew with the Italians, so it would have Italian AF markings.

This is because there were not enough surviving examples, only two in fact, and incomplete wreckage from several more examples. This underwater wreck in Croatia is Ju-87R-2 that was flown by the Italian Regia Aeronautica and was shot down while attacking ships. (There is another Stuka out in those waters somewhere that was also shot down that day.) Building any Stuka, flying or static has been difficult because there are so few of them and the drawings and documentation for them is incomplete or missing. Billionaire Paul Allen's museum obtained the wreckage from two Ju-87R that were lost in Russia and used them for reference to build their flying Ju-87R-4, although it is not finished yet. They also had engineers get detailed 3D scan data from the Ju-87R-2 in the Museum of Science in Chicago and this allowed them to complete the engineering to build a Stuka to flight specification. Hopefully the data gained from the Paul Allen restoration can be used for future rebuilds of Ju-87R series wrecks. Other variants will require more data or reverse-engineering to restore.

There are only 2 complete Stuka left in the world and none is with flying status. As far as I know there is only another one under restoration process from more than 10 years and looks like it is a very difficult process. A few wrecks are also on display. Due to the huge amount of knowledge and ressources for a restoration project, I doubt strongly that this one, and others, will not be left slowly disintegrating at the bottom of the seas. Like quite all surviving planes from WWII and specially in Germany, they were scrapped due to the need in raw materiel to rebuild these countries. Furthermore, Stuka was remaining sinister memories with sound of its siren and lots were eager to forget this plane in particular.

I'm surprised there's anything left intact about it at all. It's almost certainly so corroded that any attempt to move it or raise it would probably cause it to fall apart.

@@rescue270 It would be a delicate process to raise it, but other aircraft have been removed from saltwater. Immediate treatment to extract the salts and minerals to prevent an oxygen-fed rapid corrosion is very important and expensive. It should come out though.

Stuka rest at a depth of only 33m south of the island of Žirje, Croatia. There are no more weapons, instruments or bomb on it. Except for the engine, which is located 20m from the plane, the plane is in one piece. We all agree that it would be worth saving.

@@matjazbravc Hmm Croatia, it must have been either shot down by an Spitfire or a P51 or maybe from a brittish battleship? No bulletholes? Out of gas maybe? Any idea on how the engine got 20 m away from the plane?

Yes, surprisingly, it remains practically intact, only the engine is detached.

+@jameslongstreet9259 I think weapons experts removed the guns not long after the discovery, to prevent souvenir hunters from yanking them out.

@@gettimabodybag6213 Since Malta was the most bombed place in the world at one point and the fighting was intense it is logical to assume the sea is littered with wrecks.

@@grahamthebaronhesketh. That's what I'm saying, they may have an easier time finding some Ju-87 down there. They'd possibly even find some remains of the Ottoman fleet under Sultan Mehmet Dragut from the Great seige of Malta in 1565. Pretty rich history Malta has.

The landing gear had explosive bolts for ditching but the chin scoop was still a problem

I've stood next to the Gloster Gladiator "Faith" in Fort St Elmo, Valetta. Sadly she didn't have her wings on, but it was still very cool all the same.

@@matjazbravc Domneve so dokazi pa tudi.. Za datum se tudi ne ve točno ali je bilo 7 ali 12 Aprila 41. Enkrat je bil napaden Šibenik drugič Jadrtovac. Sestreljene naj bi bile dve oziroma celo tri Štuke. Ena je ta ki ste jo obiskali, druga je bila zadeta in je pilot pristal ter se pri tem prevrnil in ostal ujet v kabini. Našli so ga itelijani ko so zasedli Jugoslavijo en teden po napadu. Tretja naj bi strmoglavila v zaledju Šibenika. Ali je bilo to zartes letalo in ne bomba ki je odpadla iz njega. Uradnih podatkov v BG ni oziroma nikogar to ni zanimalo ker je Jugoslavija že kapitulirala. Za to na Žirju je bilo rečeno da je posadka preživela vendar glede na stanje letala tega ne verjamem. Vidi se da je z veliko hitrostjo padla v morje ker je prednji del odtrgalo in tudi dosilec bombe pod trupom je pred letalom. No v glavnem za to potopljeno vem že od 2014 ampak niso hoteli pokazati slik da je res tam.

+@ruialvaes2739 It was flying for the Regia Aeronautica, Squadriglia 239, Grupp0 97 and was shot down along with another Stuka while attacking ships on 12-April-1941. The crew survived and the second crew were killed.

There is no informations what happened with certain parts.

@@matjazbravc Thanks for the reply. I had a friend who found an intact Japanese WW2 aircraft over 20 years ago. Apparently I believe the guns were the primary reason for his dive. The depth was well beyond recreational diving, and sadly he passed away several years later before I had a chance to dive with him.

@@matjazbravc I'm not sure the metal could withstand the ascent to the surface. Was the plane downed around Italy? England (unlikely because the English channel is choppy and rough) Spain? What country is it off the coast of? I'm not going to ask what section of the country because of thieves, but the country might be nice to visit as well as the wreck.

@@matjazbravc did you see that P40 KittyHawk they found in Egypt desert.. was almost complete and it got vandalised and smashed up when word got out. Because the authorities wouldnt issue the paperwork for removal. I know its not underwater but it may interest you if you google it. Was eventually recovered and totally ruined. That one you dived is awesome. Needs to come up …

@@matjazbravc RAF Duxford museum in UK tried to get that KittyHawk. They lost a Spitfire in the deal when it fell through to the Egypt government. They may have the funds for recovery of approached.. thats a rare German plane. Only issue is licences and permissions etc. the paperwork can stop any recovery in its tracks.
