As some eagle-eyed viewers have pointed out, it turns out there IS a little "April" text on that Cowboys calendar at Hank's workstation. Oopsie! But this point did make me go back and look at Hank's Employee of the month sticker, which awards Hank for the month of May (which is why I assumed this was taking place in June). I guess someone at Strickland is a little slow at changing their calendars! But seriously, thanks to y'all for catching that mistake. I'm always worried that what's happening on screen isn't visually interesting enough, so it's nice to know that people are really keeping their attention on things.

Just want to throw this out there, the ADA does not apply to people currently taking drugs, it only prevents employers from discriminating against former addicts who have already recovered. If anything, Hank's decision to fire Leon or at the very least be more strict with him is supported by the ADA. You can read about it here if you're curious: www.usccr.gov/files/pubs/ada/ch4.htm

@@thenightrider2121 Strickland Propane does not seem to have anyone to be competent to run the managerial and business side of things causing Buck to run everything himself. There is a history of having disastrous employees like when Buck was in the hospital with a heart attack and he left a guy straight out of law school to run things during a winter emergency and everything turned to crap due to his lack of real world experience. Hank has done some bad things. Remember how he tried to stop Kahn from taking his antidepressants all because one of the withdrawal symptoms was hyperactivity, which enabled Kahn to be focused on building a grill? Yeah. That was pretty shitty of him!

i think you have this backwards, Kahn is manic depressive so when he doesn’t take his medicine he goes into manic episodes followed by extremely depressed episodes.
@AmethystTheEspeon
@AmethystTheEspeon 4 месяца назад
@ladyyyhokage the point is Hank still took advantage of his condition. For someone who was supposed to be an everyman sort of character, that was pretty low of him. Still, no one said that the everyman was perfect, so there's that.
@katiacritten9975
@katiacritten9975 3 месяца назад
Well to be absolutely fair to Hank, he didn't know what Kahn's medicine was for until Kahn had a depressive episode. Kahn just said "I don't know why I take these pills, I'm not even sick." Sure Hank took advantage of the condition later, but it was Kahn's choice to go off his meds. Hank DID encourage it, but wasn't working with any information outside of Kahn saying he's not sick. Though later he did choose the robot grill over Kahn's mental health. The most generous read is him deciding that they had already come so far and decided that they have to finish. Not really the right frame of mind but Hank is a very human character and as such has very human failings
@ladyyyhokage
@ladyyyhokage 3 месяца назад
@@katiacritten9975 yeah i agree with both of y'all, Hank is a very flawed character in some ways, like when it comes to like, social issues like mental health and similar ones, and it's totally okay to criticize him for that but the one thing i will say about Hank is that he is very open-minded and is willing to learn new things and accept new ideas into his life, especially when it comes to people he cares about. Hank really didn't understand the severity of Kahn's mental illness in the beginning, but he did start to figure things out and change his views and behavior, which is so much more than most people in Hank's position and mindset are usually willing to do.

It was still a very "normal" question for a small town business/mindset, fucked up as it was. Same as Hank judging by football team preference; it's not legal or ethical at all, but it was played off as one of those 'behind the scenes' moments that got put up front for laughs. Hiring practices are often unethical and skirt the lines of legality-- it's a matter of being smart enough to not be loud about it.

Honestly, The return of Anthony the social worker is the one scene of this episode that stands out to me. Especially because of the deleted scene where Hank recognizes him, In fact if they had kept that deleted scene I like to think that Hank and Anthony would've explained some of their history with each other, And here's how I think it probably would've played out in terms of dialogue - Hank: Twig boy? Anthony: So you do remember me? Hank: Oh I remember you alright, You're that jackass of a social worker who accused me of child abuse and tried to take my son away. Anthony: Yeah, And it was thanks to you and your son I lost my job in child services and got relocated back to LA. Hank: Good, Because you were clearly terrible at your job. Anyway, That's how I think it would've played out.

Texas is an At Will employment state. Leon could've been fired for any reason as long as it wasn't due to religion, orientation, gender, or disability. Which drug addiction is not a disability. Also even if it was, I don't think Strickland would be under negative scrutiny keeping an unstable person away from volatile substances. Also I'm pretty sure Leon answering the company phone with "T-Man" (presumably his dealer) is why the customer was lost, not due to the slogan being messed up. Actually, under title 1 of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1994, substance abuse is considered a disability. However, it only provides protection to those who are seeking rehabilitation, have been rehabilitated, or are accused incorrectly of using illegal drugs, basically your not allowed to discriminate against someone for being treated for or previously having a addiction, however if Leon was caught continuing to use illegal drugs then he would lose ADA protection, also too you could just fire him for non drug related issues as the Ada doesn't protect you for that

Another time I remember Peggy being better was Peggy Makes the Big Leagues. Peggy's unwilling to pass a failing student just because he's good at football (and she tries her damndest to help him), while everyone, including Hank, is putting the screws on her to pass him. She only relents when Hank gaslights her into thinking she was failing to reach him because she sucks. Sure, he comes clean with Peggy and works with her to rectify the situation, but still... Granted, Hank was getting the screws put on him too, but he should've stood by his wife.

Hey guys, first time channel viewer and lifelong King of the Hill appreciator. I wanted to say first that I enjoyed the video, but I disagreed with about 80% of the opinions and wanted to share my point of view. @Reviewed2Death Here’s the cliffnotes: - In this episode Hank was definitely worse than Peggy, however not worse than the worst thing she’s ever done. - Examples include abducting a child over state lines, causing the death of a industry leading food supplier, distorting an uneducated family-friend’s (Lucky’s) grasp of basics of high school education standards - and lowering his chances for securing a better paying job, investing in a roller derby team that almost sent the Hill family into debt, quitting Luanne’s job for her and roping Bill into a pyramid scheme through romantic and sexual insinuation. - Hank deserves monthly acknowledgement due to his work ethic. If you want the other employees to work harder, make different categories or add new incentives. You shouldn’t run a business like a little league soccer tournament, rewarding employees on merit and commitment just makes the most sense. - Hank would definitely bitch if he didn’t receive the reward though. That was also a spot-on impression of him by the way, kudos! - The Bobby mock interview was just as heartwarming as you described. 10/10. - Hank definitely shouldn’t have asked about religious orientation. It is in character though with Hank being a moderately conservative christian and being uncomfortable with anything that differs from his norm. Still fucked though. - Peggy was a great partner by informing him that was illegal because I believe he was simply ignorant about permitted interview questions. - Maria was extremely professional and knowledgeable about the field. This is what solidifies Hank being worse than Peggy in this episode. - That football shit was dumb as hell. - Hank speaking openly about his concerns of feeling intimacy in the work environment exemplifies the amount of trust and interpersonal communication the and Peggy have in their relationship. - Even though Peggy didn’t do anything wrong by turning the hypothetical into a sexual roleplay scenario, it did further reinforce the concerns Hank had and probably skewed him even more so towards not accepting Maria’s application. - The only legitimate argument Hank has for his actions is the fear of a lawsuit due to possible supervisor misconduct, if things did get spicy. Still not enough. Misogynistic and unacceptable in the workforce. Period. - Leon was very convincing in his interview, and coming off of Hank’s irrational fears, I don’t think Hank was wrong for not seeing he was being played. But, Leon was less qualified and did not deserve to be picked over Maria. - Leon WAS a big problem within the episode! For numerous reasons. Leon wasn’t a true antagonist however, he was just an unfortunate foil to Hank. - Being on mind-altering substances at a propane business is beyond dangerous. People can die. Leon throwing files, ruining sales acquisitions, disrupting brand loyalty and having basic bookkeeping skills is unacceptable. - Leon’s position of accessories manager actually holds more power than you’d assume. Monitoring heat thermometers and extra secure gas nozzles for tanks, ordering potentially dangerous supplies for the business, etc. - - If Joe Jack shouldn’t be relaxing due to being hazmat certified, then Leon’s ass definitely should not be managing all of the store’s accessories. - The show did portray Leon worse than they should’ve. Drug addiction is a curse and needs to be addressed in a more constructive and encouraging manner. - Peggy’s version of fixing mistakes is falsely turning in works she did as her son’s, getting jealous of her son’s success, breaking into a middle school at night, hanging up a soiled flag she stole from her veteran neighbor, running over said flag and doing this to win a college rivalry. She’s not getting exonerated. - Bobby is a goat for informing his dad of Leon’s likely drug use and for fixing Leon’s shoddy bookkeeping. Peggy was right to chide Hank. - Personnel files should never leave the office and should be secured. - Hank was totally in the right to fire Leon. He should’ve taken more personal responsibility, but Leon staying would’ve caused potentially fatal results. Let’s not forget when the Megalo Mart blew up and killed Buckley. - Hank was extremely good natured to give Leon the contact information for a different rehab clinic, since the previous one didn’t work. Leon abused that trust by weaponizing it against Hank. - Recovery should be encouraged at all costs. Even if Leon did maintain his job due to a loophole, there was still a chance for redemption and future storylines. - Twig boy was arguably doing a noble job at his last profession, but did not pick up on the nuance of family dynamics. This one is also noble as well. - They should’ve left the original scene where Hank recognized him in. It could’ve given the story a real antagonist by personifying government officials who abuse social equity causes. It also would’ve given Hank greater reason to hate the workspace changes as it was being enforced by the person who tried to take Bobby away from him. - The withdrawal therapy should’ve been moved to a non-working hours, however Leo’s amount of work time should’ve been lessened (as well as the scope of his role and authority held). - Methadone is extremely important for recovery and Hank shouldn’t have dismissed it. Leon should’ve suggested tinted glasses and a dim office to work in, instead of forcing the entire workplace to dim the lights to accommodate his journey. Recovery should be encouraged because it is a hard but worthwhile endeavor, however, individuals should not expect to further inconvenience those around them for past mistakes and current choices. Accommodate but don’t bend over backwards. - Texas is an at will state, but it does not make it justified to fire someone without cause. - Withdrawal pain does not equal work ethic. I’ve had withdrawal symptoms. Scariest shit I’ve ever experienced, but that would not have it justified for me to get a medal. I am proud of my accomplishment of getting through the tumultuous time in my life, but workplaces should be a meritocracy and not a charity. - Buck is terrible for suggesting hooking Leon back into drugs. - Leon’s life is at risk of being fuck up, but arguably that was done of his own volition. Businesses have to stay afloat to support the livelihood of their employees and have a positive effect on the local economy. If Leon was fired, that would’ve been just. - The entire working body needed to be reprimanded. Good on you for suggesting detailed medical proof for accommodation. - Joe Jack is being an ass. - ADHD does not lead to thinking celebrities are going to die due to your direct actions. Also that guy is definitely an opportunistic faker. - I would believe the bloating concerns of Melinda but she’s filing her nails with a smile, not clutching her abdomen with a frown. - The world doesn’t demand shit. Societies demand perfection, and yes Peggy’s point still stands, but again it’s not a valid excuse. - Taking Hank's legal name is incredibly off putting. Even if this is a show of respect, this infringes on numerous workplace dynamics and is stalker-esque behavior. Good on Leon for trying to have a sober name. - The coach stuff might be correct, but that literally changes nothing. Taking someone’s full name is odd behavior that shouldn’t be tolerated. - Hank shouldn’t have quit because of the Texas’s at-will firing policy. Besides he has seniority and is integral to the business’s success. - You were right about the copout with the different branches, but I still think the legal loophole thing was an apt portrayal of how malleable business law is in the US. - Hank having no vacation time punishes his family more than him. Hank loves to work but will miss out on family time. The loss of seniority makes Hank’s authority less within the workplace and could lead to further conflict. If - Hank’s pay was also cut, this would’ve been seriously detrimental towards the Hill family. - Allowing Debbie to do nothing and look pretty is wrong and sexist. She does not deserve to be objectified nor does she deserve to have that creepy guy leer at her. - Buck most likely did set everything into motion. - Peggy being mad makes no fucking sense and almost of proves Hanks point of spousal jealousy. Almost… - Maria shouldn’t have grabbed Hank’s ass even under the request of Buck. Sexual assault on day one of a new job is crazy and her character portrayal deserved better. - The ending is weird. You brought up some great points I didn’t even consider. - Drug testing a child that is not a formal employee is most likely illegal and definitely immoral. Good video essay but man there’s a lot to address here. You were a great commentator though and I hope to see more videos. King of the Hill is one of my favorite shows and seeing this amount of love from the fanbase warms my heart. Keep on creating friend!

The one thing that bothered me about Maria in particular was the feel she copped at the end. Like what was even the point of her doing that? Because she didn't show any signs of attraction to Hank during those interviews. That's probably what inspires theories about Maria being put up to it by Buck or it just being something he hallucinated or something. Her doing that kind of ruined the whole "professional" aura she had going for her the whole time. It made me think she's like that with other employers. it even almost justifies Hank not hiring her which pisses me off because Hank was clearly in the wrong for that. 41:09 I feel as though that last argument was blown a bit out of proportion and damn near moot. because while I am a major advocate for giving more patience to those with mental disabilities and addiction issues, because it runs in my family, the comparison made in that argument is still far from one to one. you got to remember when he came in he already had a list of detox centers that he went to and yet still came in on drugs, persisted to use drugs, and then didn't even seemingly get into the genuine process of trying to wean off drugs until he had to legally fight for his right to keep his job. if you give someone a life preserver then all it does is the one job its hard to fuck up using that resource. But if we were to do a one-to-one comparison with leon it would be the equivalent of "let's save our last life preserver because others have thrown six at him and he continues to dodge them while drowning somehow. but now that he drifted to our Watering Hole we have to keep him safe". I'm not disagreeing that Hank isn't a piece of s*** for all the other things you listed but it's the writers who were trying to write Leon as a piece of s***. so even though his situation may be sympathetic they did their best to make him unlikable if anything that's one of the few times I will argue the writer should have did a bit of rewriting or tweaking of his character. If anything else I think they maybe failed in their depiction of a hippie douchebag druggie by maybe adding a bit too many accuracies of actual drug addiction and medications. but as for nonsympathizers as someone who has family members who have addictions even we get tired when we notice a pattern of said family member more or less just kicking the can down the road instead of genuinely wanting to change so I can see where others are coming from. I'm pretty sure Twigboy wasn't helping. He undoubtedly thought he was, but he was just enabling. And I think that was what he represented. Bureaucracy intended to help, only enabling those who are having the problems, oftentimes making them worse. Because even afterward, Leon is still obviously high a good portion of the time, and while an employee is entitled to reasonable accommodation, it has to be REASONABLE. Lowering the lights for one man in a place of business is not Reasonable. He also does not get anything done, which any employer has the right to fire an employee over. Also, I don't know of any employer who keeps an addict on their active team. Maybe they will keep them on their rolls until they've done their rehab, but rehab centers typically keep them on site for rehab. Also, why is it outlandish for Hank to want to not have an addict using his name? Especially one who has been using while at work?

I think Hank gets a lot of passes for the things that he does because for the most part, they come from a place of ignorance. His craving for structure has unfortunately stunted his emotional growth and at points has bubbled over into forcing his way to the people around him. Hm, anyone else think this episode is why buck chooses to hire a recent grad to run the buisiness when hes sick rather than entrust it to Hank or any other employee? Hank is so clearly looking for a buddy, not an employee. It really does explain why Hank isnt a manager. Buck may be sexist too but at least he doesn't let it get in the way of business, he hires maria because she was the most qualified (my head canon is buck set up the ass grab and got peggy to play along to teach hank a lesson - that or the whole last scene is a nightmare hank has) Seriously, Hank goes through his illegal questions despite being warned beforehand, and the scene where he assumes Maria cant know anything about grills because shes a woman was so painful. And he didn't even check references! Basically everything this video points out about how bad his behavior is this episode is spot on BUT for the Leon side of things, I think the episode makes it clear that Leon is refusing to do any work and that he ONLY entered rehab so he wouldn't get fired and is likely playing lip service to the program. Also feels like twig boy is pushing the bounds of the law to extremes as revenge against hank for getting him fired which is why the other employees are able to get away with their shenanigans. After all, accomodations are one thing but you still have to do the job. And Leon says he's sober, but he still acts high a lot of the time. Sure, hes not foaming at the mouth anymore but im pretty sure the reason he suggests 'hank hill' as his new name isnt to honor or to bully him, but because he was never with it enough to even associate the name with the person. Basically the episode does this weird turn where even though its clear that hank created this mess by being a prejudiced ahole, he doesnt learn his lesson, they just make everyone else a bigger problem to make it feel like hank is justified in the solution he comes up with

I wonder if this episode is the reason that Buck couldn't give Hank a severance package, and that's because he already did during Hank's six months probation.
